Tuvalu is a lovely atoll and is surprisingly easy to get to from Singapore as we have direct flights to Fiji. We stayed there for 4 days and it was amazing how you could see both sides of the country while you are riding on the road. The people were super friendly and you definitely need to visit their stamp shop too!

The scenery, the people, houses, the landscape and motorcycles reminds me a lot of the kampungs here in Malaysia. It astonishes me that despite the huge distance between us, we could still share a lot of similarities due to our common origin. I pray and hope that Tuvalu continues to exist in the future as an independent state.

@@JamieFab both Malaysian and Tuvaluan are Austronesian, just because they're on a different side of an artificial line doesn't mean they're not related. Malaysia and Tuvalu live in almost similar lifestyle and their cultures and language are related.

Sorry, Malaysians do not share “a lot of similarities”. Tuvaluan culture is heavily influenced by their unique landscape and seafaring + fishing lifestyle. Only some resemblance is with the Bajau people who are persecuted by Malaysian government.

Staying on map reminded me of spotting Tuvalu as a child, we used to play games over the world map to spot difficult names, & Tuvalu always used to be our difficult bet as it was tiny and hard to find, that immediately striked me as soon as I read about it in an article over FB... Quickly searched about Tuvalu to know the current scenario and found this video... really touching... I really wish the best for this wonderful nation and it's courageous and generous people

If the sea level is rising in Tuvalu it must also rise in costal cities in the U.S. and Canada...except it isn't rising in those countries , so something else is at play here, erosion and sinking of the substrates on which the island was built.

Perhaps they could begin planting mangroves around the island. Biodegradable materials, such as leaves and bark, could then be deposited on the beach, as the newly planted mangroves will protect this area.

It could be climate change but I also believe things just occur naturally over time. Kind of like when a part of Florida changed geographically due to the recent hurricane they had. Nature will always be a force it’s the way the world ended up the way it is now eventually soil erodes, pieces of land break off to create smaller pieces of land which end up being islands. For these reasons & my bank account I could never live on an island just because of the feeling of living on borrowed time it’s heavier when you can see the ocean like that. These people are very brave & strong to want to help their country I pray it doesn’t slip away.

I have never heard of Tuvalu before. But with it being that long, narrow strip of land simple wave action moves soil from one place to another. Everything changes, whether there are humans or not. Different islands will disappear and the soil will be moved somewhere else. It looks like a wonderful place to live as long as it is there.

That won't work. There's going to be meters of sea level rise. The only way I can see for people to stay there, is if you raise the places people live far above the current sea level. That's a serious construction project. At the moment it would mean building islands in the air. I'm sure this sounds crazy, but it is the only solution I can think of to deal with multiple meters of sea level rise. You have to plan for it and build to where you think the sea will be at its highest point. This is NOT an easy solution, but I think it is the only way people will be able to stay there, as opposed to moving somewhere else. The only other option I can think of is finding an island/islands that are high above the current seas, and currently uninhabitable for the people to move to. This comes with the challenge of making such islands habitable. Whatever they decide to do, I wish the Tuvaluan people the best of luck, it would be a shame to lose their languages, and culture.

I have seen such a place in cartoons . My God! really there is one such place on Earth. Easy fishing may be keeping the people stick to that place. I can imagine how discomfert it is due to noise of breaking waves. What about water, and toilet. May be the place is suitable for scientific observation , certainly not for permanent living. Compare it with Arctic, Antarctic desolate regions. Strong trees cannot grow, no grasing animals. Lighthouse, experimental antennas and such things can be put there with escape mechanisms in case of disaster.

Well… regardless of the cause of the climate change, isn’t erosion itself a form of climate or environment change? 🤔 I mean, you said yourself, coastal land is and always has been unstable and prone to erosion… I agree. So I don’t think there is any one finger to point the blame with. Some of it is undoubtedly naturally occurring changes, but a lot of things are likely to be exacerbated by the overpopulated planet and mismanaged resources and waste. As in, these may not be the root causes of climate change, I don’t know, but those things surely won’t add anything good to an already existing, natural issue.
