Indonesian police fire tear gas to disperse protest at parliament

Indonesian police fired tear gas and water cannon on Monday (Apr 11) to disperse hundreds of university students protesting against high cooking oil prices and a mooted extension of President Joko Widodo's stay in office.
Crowds of demonstrators were seen running away from the scene outside parliament in the capital Jakarta, according to a Reuters witness, while Kompas TV said that rocks had been thrown into the complex.

From my knowledge, this is a group of students from several universities in Jakarta. They are protesting a recent unofficial government's plan to extend the president's last term. That unofficial plan has been circulating among medias. But the president himself has clarified this issue, that he wont extend his term. The protesters then ask the parliament to make sure that the president would lay his office on time, and to perform the normal election on 2024 without delay despite COVID issue. The cooking oil is being added as one of the actual issues to be solved. Some says that a certain business group have prevented the oil distribution for financial gain. Some says that it was to provoke political turmoil. Some says it is just to mock the weak government. Some says that this is a proof that a bad joke can turn into real: that is "people are dehydrated in a shower." It refers to the scarcity of oil even though Indonesia is a palm oil producer.

President Jokowi had already made his decision to step down after 2 term which is remarkable. This is to pave way for capable politicians to lead Indonesia. Indonesia is unlike some countries that the leader, his family members, elite & politicians enrich themselves with million $$$ & refused to retire. Even when step down from current position will eye on senior position to still enrich their pockets. This continues until they RIP. Taxpayers & citizens had to bear million $$$ to fund such kind of feudalistic system for retired pensioners. Just like Imperial China of the past.
