The 2023 Labour Party, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti have expressed divergent opinions about the planned nationwide protest scheduled for August 1 to 10, 2024 across the country.
Speaking with Channels Television during a courtesy visit at Dr. Alex Otti's country home in Nvosi, Isialangwa South Local Government Area, Peter Obi said the hunger protest was a constitutional right of the citizens, saying the sponsors of the protest is hunger, hopelessness among the youths. While urging those in authority to engage and give a listing listening ear to the protesters, Obi pleaded with the protesters and security agencies to ensure they operate in a civil manner and within the ambit of the law.

Did you ask your LGA chairman, senator, reps, what they are doing with community money given monthly to them? Or you think Tinubu is supposed to provide jobs for you? What then is the role of governor and other elected officials? Illiterate youths that don't know different between left and right hand.

The other day Akpabio (Tinubu’s puppet in the Niger delta region or is it South-South), who claimed to have studied law in the university said that all employers should be paying all their domestic staff a minimum 70,000 Naira each, every month without making any reference to the National Minimum Wage Act to have a clear understanding of what the Act says & to support his statement! I would keep on posting this in every Channels tv comment there is because it keeps on occurring and remains a fact. Same comment 👇🏽 Channels APC Tv, APC has been enshrined in the their workplace since campaign to election. I’m not just raising conspiracy theory you can watch their interviews and investigate yourself, they act like green snake in green grass They are not just supporters of the APC but also indirect informants, in the interviews they first of all give blames to opposition then ask them ‘what they plan to do about this issue or if you’re in the govt what would you have done?’ indirectly giving information to the govt and also indirectly trying to give them opposition ideas of how to run the country better than thier own confused one. Quite frankly I don’t think their views are in disagreement. I’m sure that Peter Obi would agree with the words of Governor Oti; they are objective and unbiased I believe. The procedure for protests should be done in accordance to the law, this being said, desperation drives all rationale to the wall so I can sympathize with the seeming lack of procedure in the organization of the protests. Protests are for the voice of the people to be heard, but the reason a Nation is able to remain unified is respect for the law. Provided that the law is respected both by law enforcement personnel during the protests, and protesters themselves, then protests are not bad, especially in a case like this. Nigeria’s history is coloured with protests during different times of oppression, and we should remember that we continue to write history even today. There is evil deep in the political system, and truth be told, had things been better protests would not be the talk of the nation.

I suggest that Peter Obi focus on preparing for the next election and addressing the internal issues within the Labour Party. To effectively drive change, he should adopt a more collaborative approach, recognizing that no one individual has all the answers to Nigeria's complex challenges. I share concerns about the 'Take it back movement' and its methods for addressing economic issues. While I understand the desire for change, I believe that our constitution's democratic processes provide the most effective channels for expressing grievances. I'm skeptical about protests and demonstrations as the primary means of effecting change, as they may not be the most productive approach. Instead, I advocate for inclusive and collaborative problem-solving, recognizing that every Nigerian has a vital stake in our nation's development. I urge my fellow citizens to consider the potential consequences of the upcoming protest and explore alternative, constructive ways to address our economic challenges. While I support the right to peaceful protest, I also call on security services to maintain order and protect the rights of all citizens. Let's work together to find solutions that benefit everyone, prioritizing constructive dialogue and collective progress.

I perfectly understand HE Alex Otti's view. However, how else do majority of the people voice out their frustrations and dissatisfaction with a government? Informing the armed forces about a planned protest is as good as terminating the protest. In the Nigerian context, the armed forces have already been informed. Unfortunately, the people feeding fat from the scavenging suffering of the poor Nigerians do not want the planned protest to hold. They're doing every possible thing to discourage disgruntled and hungry Nigerians. Protest is a civic right and responsibility and is not in anyway illegal. It is allowed everywhere in the world where civic rights are well respected. Unfortunately, Africans are yet to start respecting this. My only worry is the carnage our greedy politicians are planning. They're working so hard to change the actual intentions for the protest. My question is: If we don't protest, how else do we press our sufferings to the government??? Every other strategy has failed so far. The judiciary put icing on the cake by imposing Tinubu on us. We're indeed so helpless 😢😢😢

I voted for Peter Obi in the last election but now I have realized he can't change the status quo. We need someone who will think differently and who has never spoiled his hand in the past. Peter Obi ruled a state for 8 years without elected LGA Chairmen. That is a sign of a bad leadership. Aisha Yusuf looted part of Peter Obi campaign fund and he can't tell her to be transparent and accountable. Tinubu has done 2 things for Nigeria that can change the country FOREVER if properly implemented. 1. The supreme court judgment which states that federal monthly allocation to LGAs should go directly to LGA account. This brings about N776 BILLION to the 776 LGAs at the grassroots for the first time in Nigeria history 2. Canceling the UNSUSTAINABLE fuel subsidy and directing the saved money to states and LGAs for additional funding in education, health, jobs, manufacturing, etc. States now get more allocation more than anytime in Nigeria's history. Demand accountability from your governors and LGAs.

Someone needs to educate Governor Otti that citizens of Nigeria do not need permission from any security agency to embark on protest. It’s obvious that Otti is not different from people like Hope Uzodima.

Everybody, protest in your state or LGA. There is bad governance everywhere all over Nigeria. Don't use Lagos as a cover for your cowardice. Go back to your state / LGA and demand accountability from your governors and elected leaders.

The law requires bodies responsible for the protest to notify the police and I have gathered that the NLC and other bodies involved in the protest have officially informed the police of the forthcoming protest. In fact, it is on record that the police have acknowledged receipt of such notice.

The supreme court has ruled over this matter of asking for police permission before protesting and i remember Mr. FALANA citing it severally on channels TV. If you require permission from your oppressor to protest against the oppressor then there is no democracy and no one would grant permission to protest against himself. What if the permission is to protest against police extra judicial killings or misconduct will they approve it? What is protest ? Pls Gov Otti consult your lawyer next time, i think you are not aware of the current ruling on this
