It is around 25 or now even 27 years ago, I saw Chanticleer for the first time. Since then the singers changed. But the absolutely high standard never changed. Always fascinating, always extremely touching. What a pleasure to listen and to get chills.

This is such a wonderful piece, and a wonderful performance from you guys! I can't wait to sing it in a collegiate men's chorus over 100 strong!

its nice still seeing familiar faces in the group from back in 2015 when my high school choir and 9 others had the pleasure of rehearsing and singing a concert along side chanticleer with this being one of the songs in the concert. i vividly remember one rehearsal sitting in the church and have Eric Alatorre come sit beside me and ask if it was fine for him to sit beside me. The sheet music we were given for this piece didnt have the lower bass 2 line in it but i knew it was a thing from a previous time singing it so i asked Eric if it would be fine to sing that line and he said "if you can sing it go for it" that trip for those rehearsals and that concert is definitely my favorite memory from high school

I also met Eric and many of the other members in a high school workshop in 2010 and I’m still a big fan of the group 😂 definitely giving away my age

This online-only concert is one of the most memorable by this amazing group. It was a beautiful way to celebrate the holidays during the COVID lockdown that was still in place. I didn't even realize that the daylight slowly became brighter and brighter. "From Darkness to Light" was the perfect title. Thanks so much, Chanticleer.

The Bach/Gunoud is amazing. The Schubert is considered "The Gold Standard" (especially when you have Luciano Pavarotti singing it.) This is better. It is the absolute best. I am Jewish and it makes me want to feel closer to Jesus's mother (if any of you could ever figure out how conflicting that might seem to a man like me, with my particular upbringing.)

You guys will never NOT give me chills when you perform this. It was the first song that made me fall in love with this group 30 years ago, and it will forever remain my favorite. I was blessed to see you all perform this live on my birthday in 2017 at St. Ignatius, and I cannot wait for the next time. Thank you, gentlemen. 🙂

Well done fellas. I have heard them do this live several times. The original Chanticleer recorded version is an icon that I feel stands looking over the shoulders of every version by every group since. This new example is convincingly the closest in technical and emotional quality to the icon.

My absolute favorite Ave. This rendition is excellent. I do favor the 4 part SATB most. While not a professional setting the choir at my parish does it beautifully.

Today was a break in rain storms and the perfect time to mow my neighbor's lawn while he traveled with his sweetheart on his birthday. After dodging poison ivy, a thousand vengeful mosquitos, and a hornets' nest I knelt on his shaded back porch to play the Ave Maria. Seventeen years of being in their audiences in tux tailcoat or formal Scottish kilt and I never wearied of this extraordinary piece. As if carried before them by angels, I wept like many in the audiences over decades. As then the tenor solo, Matthew Oltman, told me, "It is because of those healing tears that we sing this." Renewed, cleansed and grateful I rose from my knees a new soul.

Ave Maria - Franz Xaver Biebl (1964) Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariae et concepit de Spiritu sancto. Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, Et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus, Jesus. Maria dixit: Ecce ancilla Domini. Fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum. Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, Et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus, Jesus. Amen. Amen. Amen. ___________________________________________________________ The angel of God visited Maria and she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Hail Mary, Full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus, Jesus. Maria said: See the servant of the Lord. May it happen to me according to your word. Hail Mary, Full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus, Jesus. And the Word became flesh and lived among us. Hail Mary, Full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, Holy Mary, pray for us now and in the hour of our death. Amen. Amen. Amen. Note: At one point, Chanticleer ushered in a new director. The word went out that she wanted to drop the Biebl Ave Maria. A great cry went up from all loyal Chanticleer aficionados, declaring "The Biebl" in the Christmas Concert sacrosanct! The Biebl immediately following intermission had always been a sacred tradition for so many. Often during the AIDS crisis, and more recently the years of pandemic, it offered a moment of cathartic contemplation. We thank you for preserving it all these years, and for posting this for us. And I love seeing the San Francisco Bay through the shaded windows.
