An important thing to note is that even if someone is aromantic or asexual, it doesn't mean they can never be in a relationship or preform romantic gestures, it means they have a lot less interest (or none at all) in doing so. Some aro/ace people are romance adverse, meaning they are deeply uncomfortable with romantic advances or being romantic themselves, while others on this spectrum don't mind romance, but don't feel very interested or feel any intense emotion to go with it. Aro/ace people can still go on dates or even been in relationships, it's not somehow off limits to them just because of their labels. Like Chaomix said, I definitely think Sonic leans closer to the aro/ace side of things, but I don't think he's completely adverse to romance, it's just not something he has a lot of interest in or understands the hype of.

Sonic is basically a Shounen Manga Protagonist. And since that genre is geared towards prepubescent to early teen boys, romance isn't that much of a focus point, friendship is instead. That's why oftentimes the strongest relationships in Shounen stories are with the "best friend slash Rival" characters. Strong platonic relationships are a thing but people oftentimes prefer to ship two characters instead.

A lot of famous shounen protagonist are shown as having attraction towards someone. Goku from DBZ gets married and has two children with Chichi, Naruto has a one sided crush on Sakura and later marries Hinata, Yugi very much has a crush on Anzu, and (to a slightly older target audience and slightly more obscure to those out of the know) even Kenshiro's motivation in the first arc is to save Yuria from Shin. These characters are all Shonen protagonist, and they all exhibit very outward traits of hetrosexual attraction. Sonic has plenty of suitors, but as Chaomix supposes, he doesn't seem to return any of their affection. Now, I don't believe any of the writers had Sonic's explicit sexuality in mind when writing any of the games, animes, or what have you, but the subtext is there, regardless of author intent.

Yeah, Sega decided that Amy couldn't have good character development like Adventure 1 so they kept destroying Amy and Sonic's characters. (I like lDW but not so in the characters) I hate this situation. This bad for Sonic-fans and Amy-fans. First, people ignore her good stat in games, and second, they believe her bad stat in other games and Sonic X. Like same we say Tails-Coward, Knuckles-Idiot, Sonic-jerk because of bad writing. Amy is a character who wants to help people, kind, strong, caring. Yes, she can be stubborn but usually she does this to protect herself and others or give hope to not give up and she did not force Sonic to do what he doesn't want, she trolls him like a friend did. But she not have a stable character development to game to game because different writers. Some did fine and some terribly. I hate how they write Amy in Sonic X, rush, battle and free raiders and the end of Black Night. They made her aggressive, caring for no one, using her hammer not to defend herself but just hit everyone for no reason. It doesn't make sense and is out of character. And do you remember that cut-scene from Sonic Adventure 2 where Amy persuades Shadow to help the others, in Sonic X there is also a scene, but instead of Amy, Chris ... Not only did they make her character worse, not to add something to improve her, they also exchanged her for a really poorly written character. That's why I don't take a bad script for her character. "Why would I care about this script if it was made for a "comedy" that does bad things for Amy, Sonic, and those who deal with harassment." Sonic and Amy have potential to be great friends duo like Sonic-Tails, Sonic-Knuckles, Shadow-Rouge, Silver-Blaze. I feel really bad about what they did with that pink hedgehog. Maybe someday Amy will get normal characterization and development.

(A) The English manual for Black Knight may not have been translated accurately. (B) Even if it was, the phrase was _"potentially_ stressful", which is how most people would describe their first date (and calling the encounter a date would have spoiled the game's twist ending) (C) Sonic and Amy's interactions had generally been going in a more positive direction since '06 (D) The most likely reason this plot point was ignored in subsequent games was simply due to the change in writers.

Even as a child who had no idea about the concepts of sexuality many years ago, despite being surrounded and conditioned by tropes like "hero gets the damsel", etc... I *always* saw the whole Sonic x Amy thing to be extremely one-sided. Like, I literally only had one digit in my age back then and all I could think about was how Sonic really wasn't interested. A large part of Sonic's personality revolves around his love for "freedom", so truly? The idea of Sonic being Aro/Ace only makes the most sense. Sonic has never treated Amy different to say, Tails in my experience. At least in the games, he's practically had nothing but a platonic look towards everyone. Even with the "dates" thing brought up, I think it's worth noting that "platonic dates" between friends is a thing too. Some might ask what the difference is between that and hanging out normally, but a date is often a one-on-one activity between two sides, and that can be platonic too. Sonic is probably aware that Amy doesn't see it that way, but Amy is still one of Sonic's friends. If Sonic can give one of them his undivided attention, then there's no harm in taking the opportunity to hang out with Amy as well, even if nothing comes of that. Really cool video topic to bring up, great work! I know there will be people who look at this and turn up their nose at the idea because of "how dare you gender politics my favourite blue rat", but it's honestly quite an innocent topic. When I grew up with Sonic, I did see a lot of episodes for the older cartoons, but my main depiction of him was always through the games. Call me dense, but I think Sonic's a fantastic example of a hero who doesn't do anything for a reward of romantic desires. Yes, Sega did the Minnie Mouse trope and created a lady version of him for the purpose of cheap motive, but even in that very game she debuted, Sonic didn't do anything to expect a kiss or cake from her. No offense to Mario, of course. If he wants that peach, he can chase it to high heavens and back.

I've always considered Sonic from the main series to be Panromantic Asexual. He doesn't want anything serious... but at the same time isn't entirely too opposed to the idea, given there have been moments he returns gestures and seemed to have some moments with Elise. (A mobian and human relationship really isn't that weird to me...) But in Sonic Boom he gives more of an awkward bisexual vibe. Boom Sonic isn't too scared of settling down in Boom given he actually has a fixed address and has some moments where he's awkwardly too shy to admit he and Amy might like eachother. Plus in the episode where he gives Tails dating advice, many people think he's acting like Shadow... as if he's attracted to Shadow's type in the show. I think there's room for multiple types of Sonic who can offer multiple types of representation >^

I'm not super well known with lgbt+ spectrums, so I can't really say where I think Sonic is on it, but I really like the concept. I wish Amy in the games was more like Boom Amy where her thirstiness was toned down a notch or two. She still had a thing for Sonic but she wasn't so invasive about it and Sonic had a thing for her too. If there's one thing Boom did right, is make her more than a love interest. I also liked how she was more sympathetic to Eggman when he showed signs of wanting to change or they shared interests. Honestly if the show took itself seriously, I could imagine her in like a team mom role when the chips are down and Sonic to be team dad. I always felt Sonic never appreciated Amy's advances, she's quite pushy and doesn't give him much space. I think he likes her like a little sister, she's just a good friend to him. In my own headcanon, he and Blaze have a thing for each other but are just too shy to tell them how they feel. Blaze has shown signs of affection towards Sonic, like in Sonic and The Black Knight where Blaze's duplicate from Camelot blushes after Caliburn brings up "hugs and kisses" (I can't remember that clearly it's been forever since I've played SATBK), or in Sonic Runners where Blaze says she's at Sonic's birthday strictly for him. Whereas Sonic probably feels she's perfect because they can go on adventures and not be tied down since they're both heroes with super speed

I didn’t think SonAmy was a good romantic ship until Forces & IDW, because before then she was too pushy, but since then she’s been written way better I think it could actually work out between them someday. In the past Amy wanted to marry Sonic which would tie him down from being a free spirit, however since Amy has had character development and is actually listening to Sonic now, yes I think he may have found her attractive in that moment, I definitely believe that Sonic is/was never Aro Ace, but just hadn’t found the right partner.

As much as I like lgbtq rep, I kind think Sonic’s issue is that he’s just hyper-aware he’s not relationship material. (DBZ made me realize this actually). Like, imagine dating someone with a highly adventurous spirit who is also constantly being called on to save the world. Nobody would ever be able to keep up with him and he would be unhappy being expected to constantly stay in one place to support his partner. It would be unfair to both of them - his freedom would be limited and his partner’s rightful relationship expectations would only be fulfilled begrudgingly.

I mean, realistically he'd have to be with someone who's on the same level. Someone who could be there with him and fight with equal ability against enemies, who is also willing to share in adventure. That's why I ship him and Shadow, because it would work well in that regard. They're equals (for the most part) in power and ability, both unwilling to settle down and stay still, both constantly fighting evil and could and have worked together to do so and also be able to relax and spend time together during downtime.

I’m Aro Ace, and I’ve always seen Sonic as such. I’m also Japanese and grew up with the Japanese version of Sonic, so that may also be a reason why I view him as Aro Ace. I’ve always had a hard time distinguishing romantic attention directed at me vs. friendship. I value my friends very much, and I’d do as much as I can to help my friends. I always feel awful when a friend thought I was returning romantic interest by being nice, when in fact I was being nice because I want to be nice to my friends. Sonic is a mascot in Japan. In the whole meta-canon for mascots there, every one of them is like that. Even when it seems otherwise, they're really just playing around, trying to fit in with the humans, which is what Amy's supposed to be doing, she's the most humanized of the bunch. I personally don't subscribe to this interpretation, just because I feel there's enough external material and interviews surrounding the game universe itself that, yes, Sonic harbors romantic feelings for Amy, but doesn't like the idea of being tied down to a relationship because of his free spirit. I also believe it was totally Sonic Team's intention for Sonic to have an interest in Elise in Sonic 06, though fans don't like to admit it... Regardless, I think it's great that different people can get different interpretations out of these games, and see aspects of themselves in the titular protagonist. That's a beautiful thing.

I think Sonic is intended to just not be ready to be tied down and also doesn't know how to express his romantic feelings, but it's fun to see how different people interpret him. :) Lately I've seen a lot of fanart and discussion around the idea of Sonic being trans and I think that's a fun interpretation too ^^ Also when I was younger I was definitely very adamant on which pairings I liked best, but now I tend to just have preferred pairings while still enjoying the idea of others. Life's too short to have actual heated arguments about which fictional characters should be kissing each other. :')

Thank you so much for making this video, it means a lot to me as both a Sonic fan and an aroace person to see more people discussing non-straight sexuality in this fandom beyond "LOL SONADOW IS SOOOOO CRINGE" I feel like a lot of people hesitate to consider Sonic as aroace because they think that being aroace means "fully incapable of forming intimate relationships", but that's not true!! It's called the aroace SPECTRUM because we all experience it differently and there's no wrong way to be aroace. Some of us ARE entirely repulsed by sex and romance, but for others it's possible to still experience those things. Personally, I see Sonic as someone who's not big on romance, marriage, or sex, but is also not entirely opposed to intimacy; it's just that for him, intimacy doesn't mean candlelit dinners and love-making and wedding bells, it means a race and friendly sparring and subtle gestures of affection. Sonic is freedom incarnate, so it makes sense to me that he'd also practice a little relationship anarchy. (Also aspecs still have, like, family and friends and pets, we all know Sonic and Tails are the brothers ever) Anyway TL;DR I think Sonic is asexual and demiromantic and capable of intimacy but only with his rivals b/c they don't make it "weird" like Amy might (no disrespect to her tho Amy is the GOAT)

It may be worth noting that in Sonic 06, you have to complete the "Trial of Love", where you have to choose between Elise and Amy. And if you choose Amy, the Oracle says "I see. You've chosen your long-time love." This is probably the most notable piece of "evidence" in a Sonic game that indicates Sonic is indeed, in love with Amy. However, he's obviously not looking for a relationship with her at all, atleast not yet. He's off rolling around at the speed of sound, saving the world and adventuring. He doesn't want a relationship right now, and probably won't for a long time. So it seems canon that he does in fact love her, but he doesn't want anything to do with a relationship right now. Atleast, that's what it seems like to me.

I don’t find sonic to fall anywhere, it’s a series more catered to kids and teens so him not being interested in girls or relationships is probably expected since most younger kids (mainly boys) are gonna think “eww girls.” While for teens they could see it as “I don’t gotta worry about that kind of stuff I got places to go and things to do; I just wanna be free.” As for sonic’s character itself he could probably be in a relationship if he wanted to, but the dude just wants to be free and go on adventures (Edit: It would be random as hell too since sonic has shown interest and had relationships in other piece of media like the archie comics.)

I think it would've been great to mention that this a personal headcanon of yours! Although I agree, and also view him on the aro/ace spectrum (mostly because I myself fall into it and am projecting), we often won't ever get confirmed sexualities or pairings in most medias. Thus, we should be open to all fan interpretations and views of the media, because nobody is exactly wrong in who they ship with one another or what they HC them as. It's great to just sit and watch people HC them as all genders and sexualities with whomever they want! (as long as its legal of course). It's the best part about fandom, and Sonic fandom especially, which has a wide variety of queer headcanons that are widely accepted. I think people should view all characters as "everything until confirmed otherwise"! B/c we should be able to interpret how we like unless its officially stated somewhere and at that point we'll have to (circumstantially) respect the canon. I applaud your bravery to state your stance on this sort of topic though, but it's always good to present this sort of information as a "hypothetical character analysis" rather than fact. I would also like to raise to the haters in the comments that just because he is "aro/ace" does not mean he does not like women romantically or sexually. It's almost like people forget you can be multiple things at once lol. Plus, he was never "confirmed straight" either, and it should stay ambiguous imo for the sake of fandom.

As an aroace person myself, just the existence of this video makes me really happy haha c: I will say, I'd like to mention that one "Everybody Loves Shadow!" question Ian Flynn was asked in the Bumblekast. I showed it to another aroace friend of mine and they loved the idea of aromantic Shadow, so there's that! Also, shout out to Tails, man. Sonic being free as the wind might be most relevant with romantic relationships specifically, but even a friendship as strong as the one he has with Tails sounds like it would run counter to that idea. And yet the two of them are inseparable! Their bond supersedes even Sonic's desire for freedom. Obviously it's because Tails can actually keep up with Sonic wherever he'll go, but still, it's so precious.

It’s probably just me projecting onto my favorite character, but I also feel like Shadow is on the aroace spectrum as well. He’s never been attracted to anyone (to my knowledge at least). He cares about people, like Maria and Rouge, but never in a romantic way. But that’s just my head cannon.

I like this headcanon! I love most headcanons that have to do with the alphabet soup though, so that's nothing special. It's nice for folks who are on the ace/aro spectrum like myself to imagine that they share some traits with a cool guy like sonic! (Also, don't worry about people getting defensive in the comments.
