Making the rules is definitely the most tedious and boring and yet also the most important part. I think a great way to handle rules is what most big tcgs do. They split them into two, the beginners guids, rules to get you start playing and then a comprehensive rulebooks for tournaments and clarification. The starter rules should be fun short and illustrated while the comprehensive one needs to be mostly only complete and consistent. Making spreadsheets and collecting ideas and candidates for naming things is great. You can also just go with a stand in name for making cards and later replace them with one that you choose for the final design. Change will hapen a lot in development you only need to remember to go through at the end again and change everything to the final design and make sure everything is consistent and on the correct version.

IMO, classing Deuxs Dragon's ability as a Play ability is counterintuitive. When I see the word "Play" on an ability, I expect it to be an ability that triggers when I play the card, not one that triggers in the hand. Plus, this interpretation seems more consistent with other "Play" abilities in the game, such as Dice Phantom. Maybe classify Deuxs Dragon as a "Hand" ability instead? Opening up that design space seems like it could do a LOT to improve the strategic part of the game, although it does start to overlap a bit with the non-protector cards. Another thing that could help the strategic part is passive abilities. I do see the logic in not wanting scenarios where the combination of passives on the board makes it feel like you aren't even playing (Name TBD), but that seems like an issue that is better solved in card design than game design. However, the strategy around not playing cheaper evolvers with good passives early in order to get a specific combo on board later in the game seems really difficult to replicate without that design space, plus it opens up more strategic interaction as the order of removed passives could significantly swing the outcome of a turn.

To be fair for anyone who doesn’t know, what he showed was the “comprehensive rules”, not the average “rule book” insert you would find in an introductory product. The “comprehensive rules” is a collection of every rule created over 30ish years and many corner case interactions. The Comp Rules are not meant to be read from beginning to end as a teaching instrument, but as a reference for competitive and sanctioned events. For a much more representative example of a Magic “rule book” see: media.wizards.com/2014/docs/EN_M15_QckStrtBklt_LR_Crop.pdf Still not good, but better than a corporate document.

I think a cool card idea would be like a skeleton mariachi band. With 3 main skeletons And if they all die they could be like banished from your discard and free play like a 7 or 8 cost evolver. Also the game is sick 🔥

So i guess here are some elements and rarities ideas (aka the things that dont matter very much and just exist to exist) So far these are the elements you have: Fire (i think only Manflaki has this element) Grass (Zonk the Ancient, Snarlock, and i think there might be one other one) Rock (Rockannon, Kazonk, etc) Water (Jellyfisht, Aquatomic Abomination, etc) Demon/devil/dark or whatever that element is called (Beast in a Box, Neuxs Dragon) And my suggestions would be Light/angel to contrast with the devil element thingy Maybe like air/wind to finish up the 4 main elements These ones kinda stupid but i was thinking maybe like a technological or medival element? And for rarities you could use like: Common Rare Super Rare Unbelievably Rare Evolver (Yes the rarities are based off of the rarities you use in Chaos Galaxy, just different names. If you want other names you could use Common, Rare, Legendary, Mystic, Evolver)

I was thinking about deckbuilding after the pre-cons. I think including a rule that only defenders/protectors of the same type/tribe (water + water) can combine to attack. I think this is both flavourful but also promotes deck building decisions and having themed decks rather than playing "all the best cards". Another idea would be for your evolvers to provide bonuses to a particular type/tribe

Great video. I still think it would be an interesting idea if the elements of the Evolvers determined how protectors/defenders can be played. If their elements match, you would play them for their normal cost. If they don't match, the cost to play that protector is increased by 1. Of course, it's your game, and you're free to design it how you want. I just wanted to offer my two cents.

You can call it scratch tcg. Also I have an effector idea, you say a number and if you roll that number you freeplay an evolvor from your hand of the same level as the number rolled but if you roll lower then the number you sacrifice an evolvor of the same number rolled if you are able too

it's seems disingenuous to compare Magic Comprehensive Rules with the other tutorials/guides. It's explained in the website: "It is NOT meant to be read beginning to end; instead it's meant to be consulted when specific rules questions come into play." For a more reasonable comparison, you should've used the "How to play" from the same place you found the Comprehensive Rules or the new guide included in the new "Foundations" set.

5:31 Hey, Zack! I have a suggestion for you: Back in the day, some of my friends parents wouldn't let them play Magic or Yu-Gi-Oh due to the occult theme many of their cards had. These guys were bummed because they felt left out. Understandably so. My suggestion is (to prevent parents with such sensibilities from banning their kids from playing your new game) is to name the category that Beast in a Box belongs to the "Doomed-Type" perhaps...? Gives off the creepy vibe while preventing some kid from getting grounded because he said "Hell", thus getting his cards confiscated and making him sad. Just a thought that I had based on anecdotal experience. What do you think? Am I on to something?! 🤔

The playing face down thing can be a bit complicated in my opinion, since the opponent doesn't know what the cost was for that card until it is turned face up, and how can someone prove that yes I paid 2 to put this card face down 2 turns ago? It could lead to a state where you just have to trust your opponent that they didn't cheat.

I have a question about the face-down playing of cards: when playing against someone how do you make sure the card can be played within the roll? Say someone rolls a 3, has their evolvor on 2 and plays a face-down 6? After a turn or two it's not going to be certain that the roll will be remembered from when it was played!

For playing face downcards having a way to keep track of what a card costs while its face down might be smart to prevent cheating/misshaps. Mtg fixed this by making a fixed cost with morph

Another great video! A few bits of feedback about the visuals. LOVE the drop shadow on some of the cards. Very subtle but extremely effective. Also really like the blue blush on the Rare card. I think that might look nice and more prominent/special if the border colour matches the rarity, which might look particularly nice as you cycle up through rarities. I appreciate slight conflict with the elemental system which is colour based buuuut, think it would be fine and make rarer cards feel more special to play. 🩵🩵🩵❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥💪🤝🤝
