I'm not a lawyer, but it would seem to me requiring a church to get a license, which is basically a permit, most likely violates the freedom of religion under the constitution. These businesses signed contracts to pay "x" amount of taxes, and property costs, when they first opened. They may have had some difficult times, due to the "covid" thing, and signed off on a new "payment plan". However, some of these businesses being closed down will not offer them any income...that they are using to pay the city....so, they will close down and leave, and only pay the money that they owe as they want to. Which will also keep those properties closed for the duration of the contract, because no new businesses will be allowed to move in - due to contractual obligations between the businesses and the city (if they are paying taxes - or being charged for actually being tenants on those properties - their "space" is technically "occupied"). This is a lose-lose situation for the city. No one will be taking a business chance with the city now....nor do the old businesses want to keep doing business with the city.

I will hold judgment until the finances and expenses are shown, but ask yourself, should a business continue to operate while not paying its portion of the municipal upkeep? If so, who should make up the difference? Also, should churches be exempt from any financial responsibility for municipal upkeep, including property taxes? The most successful churches are run like a business, AND the pastors usually skirt income taxes by using loopholes while still profiting by putting everything in the churches name. Comparing him to Tiffany Henyard is not accurate. He's a lawyer, and she is a scammer. Lastly, if the finances and expenses are ethical, this may just be the hard pill needed to get Harvey where it needs to be. It has been a dump, and I just sold my last property there and was glad to do so. It sounds like he's holding people accountable, and that's kryptonite to those who are used to getting something for nothing.

Honestly I have zero sympathy for the churches. It's a measly $700. They don't pay property taxes so they get free fire and police protection and other city services. They do not contribute to the upkeep of the roads either. But most of these churches have pastors who live very large.

I can't figure this out. He's withholding business licenses until they start making payments on back taxes owed. He wants churches to be licensed so they can be inspected so people aren't in an unsafe building. What am I missing? What is he doing wrong? It seems like their trying to paint him as a male Henyard. I honestly don't get this story. Don't cities do exactly what he's doing? Is there more to this story, like vacations and BMWs, and I just don't know? I really don't understand the outrage. It seems like the people are basically saying there should be no penalty for not paying our property taxes.
