This is the thing that happens in every D&D game. You hint that the players should run, they don't. An NPC tells the characters to run, they don't. A huge monster arrives that is going to kill everyone unless they run, they don't. Gotta love it
@micahnewby796411 ай бұрын
That's bordering on unfair of you how you're framing it like clueless do-gooders ignoring every warning when in reality what do you expect? I mean how fun would D&D be if every PC just ran away all the time?
@brockmarie11 ай бұрын
I mean, they TRIED to run, but it initially seemed impossible to outrun their attackers, who were faster than the PCs. It didn't become apparent until later that there was a "safe zone" or where they should be heading. With the party split, up trees and behind rocks (which seemed like decent strategies at the time), those closer to the "right direction" weren't willing to leave their friends behind. Add some unfortunate dice rolls, you really can't say they weren't trying to get to safety.
@matroqueta682511 ай бұрын
@@brockmarie This has happened to me in the past as a player, by the time it became obvious that the only chance we had was to run half the party was cornered and would not be able to get it out, we wouldn't even be able to recover the bodies of the fallen It's tough to handle those situations. As a DM you don't want to TPK the party, but a lot of players will preferr a TPK over a HPK (half party kill)

I love Tom's pre-combat disclaimer, with all the little rules and details it's so easy to mess something up or even to decide that you want to do something differently on purpose because it works better for you and your group. At the end of the day all that really matters is that everyone's having a good time.

Yeah. I know rule of cool and all, but I don’t like DMs that let players do what ever they want, because they inevitably win most encounters effortlessly.
@IceMetalPunk11 ай бұрын
@@AzureImperium7701X There's another way to balance that: Rule of Cool + Consequences. Always say yes to what they try to do (within reason), but the crazier they want to be, the crazier the unforeseen consequences are. Like, maybe they're expecting "yes, and... you kill the enemy", but what they get is "yes, and... you kill the enemy, but the magic of your spell -- which wasn't intended to be used this way, and is thus unstable -- infuses the nearby trees and awakens them." They wanted to kill one thing, and they did, but now they have several more enemies they didn't expect because of their choices.

For moving diagonally, can I suggest doing the 5/10/5 rule? Basically, every diagonal space you take alternates between 5 and 10 feet. So it would be 5, 15, 20, 30, ect. That's how I usually play and it makes more sense that way personally.

Very fun episode! I want to note: the DM's handbook itself says that fun is more important than rules, and I love the way you rule things, while still paying attention to game balance (i.e. not allowing a bonus action disengage, since that's a full class feature for Rogues - but still giving a reward for clever ideas!). On that note - per Rules As Written, you can move through ally spaces - but it counts as difficult terrain (in other words, a space that would cost 5 ft of movement, now costs 10!) Excited for more of this adventure 🥰

@@brockmarie This episode, Tom has demonstrated what it means to be a true DM. "Your players forged a connection with a wolf? They used multiple spell slots to befriend and communicate with it? They're all invested in whether this wolf survives and is safe? Then... kill the doggo. And make sure he dies violently. Happy players are for Disney games, not D&D." 😂 I say this as someone who created my current D&D character intentionally to have a happy family, to buck the trend, and our DM immediately said, "Don't worry, I'll fix that." It's a little over a year into the campaign, and yes, both his parents are now dead, one murdered in front of him. D&D is all about tragedy. Liam O'Brien understands this 😂
