Wow. Those were some impressive looking homes. I'll bet there are plenty of interesting stories about Mr. Schmulbach.

There is a lot more homes like this in North Wheeling. Beautiful mansions are on Route 40. I grew up in Wheeling and it was so busy and fun, also the history is amazing.

Beautiful homes.... That lighting scenario is one that frustrates me. Other than waiting for an overcast day, what is the best way to deal with it? ND filter? Fantastic history lesson Keith. Have a great weekend!

I totally agree! Yeah maybe coming at a better time of day (not possible for me), waiting for better sky conditions, maybe filter although I don't think they're much help in this light -- and possibly HDR which I don't do personally.

I did some exploring in West Virginia, just over a year ago, however, I entered the state further to the east and unfortunately missed Wheeling. I was wondering about the houses to the immediate left of the Schmulbach house. The difference between the front facing brick work, and the sides of the houses is very distinct. I wonder if that’s because they only focus on cleaning and maintaining the front since it is the most visible part of the house, and don’t deem the sides to be as important? That would seem to match with the other houses that had their fronts painted a different color, but not the sides. As always, a very entertaining and educational video. Thank you for your work.

I appreciate the kind words! Yes the fronts don't match the sides and there's a big difference between the 1860s houses and the later ones in style!

Another great video. I'm not sure which would be my favorite, but I'd love to pull the vines off the one and restore it. I live in a boring, cookie cutter 1950s ranch in a neighborhood that has several hundred of almost the exact same house. In my opinion, nothing past the 1920s or 30s homes have much style to them. The old Sears mail order homes are about the last ones with style, or maybe the American 4 square. Not a fan of prairie style

I think that one is probably in ok condition under all of that. Puzzling why it’s been left in that state

@@Keithdotson It is a shame and I am looking for a cheaper place to wind it down. It's usually a good sign when you can't see the sky through the top floor windows

@@Keithdotson I moved to WV Charleston few yrs ago. At the Town Center Mall on 1st floor is a picture of what is now the Charleston Library Main Branch in Capitol Street, black and white picture that shows this ivy covered the building in early 1900 era is date of it. It appears as it was discovered yet the history of the Capitol of WV claims that building was a capital annex. Very strange. Even more strange is there are photos of the original Capitol on Capitol Street ( why Street named that I'm told ) , though the architecture of original Capitol which caught fire, is not made as this now Library on Capitol Street. I wish I had a photo to send you. With your knowledge you could probably search it on line. However if ever in Charleston go to the Town Center Mall and you can't miss the picture which takes up an entire wall.

He had the brewery in town. One of them anyway and he got screwed. I don't remember how but I think it had something to do with Route 2 coming through in 4 lane.

Part of the brewery was torn down for the highway expansion -- that's for sure.

I remember them from decades ago when I lived in the area, I always thought they were beautiful homes. You forgot to mention or maybe you don't know that just down the street is the best fish sandwich you can buy.

Hello, Keita and Teena. Is it also the case with you that if you live in a building of historic value, the maintenance is partly paid for by the government. In my opinion, keeping such houses in their original state costs a lot of money. They do look very nice. A bit too high for me because I can no longer climb stairs. And that abandoned house covered by nature looks beautiful too, my friend. And then a beautiful old light post in front of the door. I think, but this is personal, that your film camera could have handled the light better. But I think this and I'm not sure. But despite the harsh light, you were still able to take some lovely photos. You would make an excellent history teacher. You are curious or we can also say you would like to know everything. And you can convey it very well. When I go back in time when I found your videos on the internet, I see a very big difference in your work. Not your photo work that is rock solid, but how to make a video. Especially the one with Mr. Jimmy. This is such a big difference. Now they are small documentaries instead of KZbin videos. I really take my hat off to this, my dear friend. And I'm becoming more and more proud of the fact that I can call Mr. Dotson my friend. Thank you both for this enjoyable half-hour of photography and history lesson. Kind regards from the Netherlands, Antoine.

Thank you as always for the kind and supportive comments Antoine! Teena and I both appreciate you! Yes, I have really tried to improve my video quality in both the equipment that I use and the way I edit them -- and especially in the storytelling. A work in progress. Thanks for noticing!
