So, when he, as a gay man himself, compares p3dophila and ephebophila with being gay, he's saying that the former is a normal and good part of human sexuality (and has advocated for the introduction of another letter P to "LGBTQ+" acronym, and he doesn't mean Pansexual, if you catch my drift). That's why his contemporary popularity as a figurehead for the anti-trans movement is so paradoxical. He's a prominent contributor and collaborator with the Alliance Defending Freedom, and other far-right and anti-trans advocacy groups, who have tacked very hard to the "they're grooming/abusing children" line, and peddles for them the same lies about trans youth and desistance rates, all while being a public pro-p3dophila advocate.
