Chapter 5 of 13 Devi Suktam & Conversation between Devi and Messenger - Shri Durga Saptashati

Rishi recounts how the asuras Shumbha and Nishumbha forcefully seized Indra's rule over the three worlds and usurped the powers of various deities. The two, themselves, took over the offices of the sun, the moon, Kubera, Yama, and Varuna. They also took control of vital elements like Vayu and Agni, leaving the defeated devas in despair. Seeking respite, the devas turned to the invincible Devi, who had promised to end their calamities.
The devas praised the Devi, “Salutations to the Devi, to the Mahadevi. Salutations always to her who is ever auspicious. Salutation to her who is the primordial cause and the sustaining power. With attention, we have paid obeisance to her. We bow to her who is welfare; we make salutations to her who is prosperity and success. Salutation to the consort of Shiva who is herself the good fortune as well as misfortune of kings who is very gentle and very fierce. Salutations always to Durga who takes one across in difficulties, who is essence, who is the authority of everything; who is the basis of the world, who is the knowledge of discrimination.” Parvati, accompanied by the goddess Kaushiki, questioned the devas about their praises, and Kaushiki revealed that they praised her due to their defeat by Shumbha and Nishumbha.
Chanda and Munda, servants of the asuras, informed Shumbha about a surpassingly beautiful goddess dwelling on mount Himalaya. They urged him to claim her, emphasizing his ownership of treasures and questioned why he hadn't taken possession of this extraordinary jewel.
Shumbha sent an asura called Sugriva as a messenger to persuade the Devi to come to him willingly. Sugriva conveyed Shumbha's proposal, proclaiming his sovereignty and promising unparalleled wealth and status through marriage.
The Devi acknowledged Shumbha's message but reminded him of her vow to marry the one who conquers her in battle and matches her strength. She challenged Shumbha and Nishumbha to defeat her and claim her hand in marriage.
Sugriva belittled the Devi, questioning her ability to face the mighty asuras. He warned her that if she didn't agree to the demand of Shumbha, she would be dragged by her hair and taken to the King of Asuras. However, the Devi stood firm, upholding her vow and leaving the decision to Shumbha.
This marks the end of the fifth chapter.
ऋषि बताते हैं कि असुर शुंभ और निशुंभ ने बलपूर्वक इंद्र के शासन पर कब्जा कर लिया और विभिन्न देवताओं की शक्तियों को अपने अधीन कर लिया। उन दोनों ने खुद ही सूर्य, चंद्रमा, कुबेर, यम और वरुण के पदों को भी अपने हाथ में ले लिया। उन्होंने वायु और अग्नि जैसे महत्वपूर्ण तत्वों को भी अपने अधीन कर दिया, जिससे पराजित हुए देवता निराश हो गए। शीघ्र राहत की तलाश में, देवताओं ने अपराजिता देवी का स्मरण किया और भगवती विष्णुमाया की स्तुति करने लगें, जिन्होंने उन्हें वर दिया था कि वह उनके संकटों को समाप्त कर देगी।
देवताओं ने देवी की प्रशंसा की, "देवी को नमस्कार, महादेवी को नमस्कार। जो सदा शुभ है, उन देवी को नमस्कार, जो सृष्टि की उत्पत्ति का मूलकारण है और पालनकर्ता है उन्हें नमस्कार। हम अपने चित्त से उन्हें नमन करते है। जो साक्षात कल्याण है, सफलता और समृद्धि है, उन्हें हम नमस्कार करते है। शिवसंगिनी को नमस्कार है, जो स्वयं राजाओं का सौभाग्य भी है और दुर्भाग्य भी है। जो अति सौम्या तथा अति रौद्रा है | कठिन परिस्थितयों से हमें सदा पार करने वाली दुर्गा को नमस्कार है, जो सार हैं, जिसका हर चीज़ पर अधिकार हैं, जो जगत का आधार हैं, जो विवेक का ज्ञान हैं।" तभी पार्वती देवी वहाँ आती है और देवताओं से पूछती है कि वे किसकी प्रशंसा कर रहे है। कौशिकी देवी बताती हैं कि वे उनकी ही प्रशंसा कर रहे है क्योंकि शुंभ और निशुंभ ने उन्हें पराजित कर दिया है।
शुंभ के सेवक चंड और मुंड, पार्वती देवी कि सुंदरता के विषय में, शुंभ को बताते हैं कि हिमालय पर्वत पर एक अत्यधिक सुंदर देवी निवास कर रही है। जिसे शुंभ ने अपने वश में करना ही चाहिए, वे राजा से पूछते है कि जब तीनो लोकों के सारे रत्न और कीमती वस्तुओं को उन्होंने हासिल कर लिया है तो फिर इस देवी को जोकि एक अद्भुत मणि के समान है, उसे अब तक हासिल क्यों नहीं किया ?
शुंभ ने देवी के सामने विवाह का प्रस्ताव रखने के लिए एक असुर सुग्रीव को दूत के रूप में भेजा। सुग्रीव ने देवी को राजा शुंभ के विवाह प्रस्ताव का सन्देश दिया और उन्हें सत्ता और अपार धन-संपत्ति का प्रलोभन दिया।
देवी ने शुंभ की महानता और तीनो लोको पर उसके प्रभुत्त्व को स्वीकार करते हुए सुग्रीव से कहा कि उन्होंने एक प्रतिज्ञा ली है कि वे उसी से विवाह करेंगी जो उन्हें युद्ध में पराजित कर दें और शक्ति में उनसे बराबरी का हो। उन्होंने शुंभ और निशुंभ को चुनौती दी कि उन दोनों मे से कोई भी उन्हें पराजित करें और उनके साथ विवाह कर लें।
सुग्रीव ने देवी को तुच्छ समझकर उनके सामर्थ्य पर प्रश्न खड़े किए। उन्होंने उन्हें चेतावनी दी कि यदि वह शुंभ की मांग को स्वीकार नहीं करेंगी, तो उन्हें उनके बालों से खींचकर ले जाया जाएगा। हालांकि, देवी अपने वचन पर दृढ़ रही। उन्होंने निर्णय शुंभ पर छोड़ दिया।
