I like your videos, but I struggle to see the effect as you describe it. Many of these pictures are back lit and I feel like I'm inviting a discussion whether or not the light was there (hopefully I'm not :D ). In the comparison shot there is some differece in redering that's more suitable for this composition, but the first picture is also front focused so it simply looks softer. The second picture has the steepest difference in highlight and shadow, so I'm not sure if we're looking at the same pictures. I'm used to this kind of discussion from audiophile perspective but I think I also saw it in cine lens and sensor topics, so I guess they may have something to say too. Some gear has this soft sharpness where it shows detail, but without too much local contrast, The pictures from a party remind me of the rendering I got from Rollei HFT lenses and EBC X-fujinon 50mm 1.2 DM. In many pictures I can see you had light from a few directions to get that subject separation, and I know from my own experience that if you add lights and balance them nicely under controlled conditions, you can get something like this too. It's just that people in studio usually work with 1 or 3 lights and call it a day. Can it be done without the special lens?

Hi, I was indeed sloppy when taking those pictures. Sorry for that. As for the lighting, generally I use available light. Some lenses have this effect in most any light while others don't. It is quite consistent. By the way, the images at the introduction were shot with various lenses that excel in the rendering of depth.
