In fact moderate Muslims are being extreme, in a way that is lacking. They are extremly lagging behind the standards expected from a muwahhid, they are being extremely lax with the shariah, they are being extremely close to the disbelievers and allying with them whereas Allah says not to take them as awliya/allies. Moderate muslims are extremism in itself only the opposite spectrum of what you are referring to.
