Why was Assault's story superb? Gee, it's almost because it was attempting to actually be a sequel instead of yet another reboot and trying new things in the canon! The Aparoids were their own thing, not some invention of Andross, and they were honestly pretty scary, Borg Zerg that they were. It really sucks that Command FUBAR'd the canon, because they could have easily ignored it for the next game, but Nintendo seems to be all about reinventing the wheel these days, even if the wheel they make is *_FUCKING SQUARE._*

Exactly. I LOVED and ADORE the design and story of assault, but HATE and DETEST the design and story in command. One's dark for the right reasons because it gives our heroes stakes and challange. the other is a fucking space furry opera that would make the worst of fanfiction blush. I mean sheesh Fox dumping krystal and Krystal turning into such a bitch, humiliating Fox, calling him names, joining starwolf for panther just to get back at him (poor Panther too btw), says Andross did nothing wrong (As Fox who's standing right beside her, had his father killed by him not to mention started a war. twice.) Leaves starwolf and she goes emo, and Fox seriously goes into such a depression he barely EATS OR SLEEPS. Gee writers how much more mean spirited can you possible get?? oh but slippy's getting married right?! bah. This all could easily be avoided if the writer/s remembered that KRYSTAL IS PSYCHIC. She'd quite literally see right through his tough guy facade! Gameplay wise its repetitive af too but i did like the idea of each character having their own designed ship with their own attributes. Then again thats taken away since they fcked up Bill and Katt's designs/ships. How do you make BIll a grey surfer bro to a brown southern?! how do you go from pink to grey?! and who thought her new ship design was a good idea?!

@@EclipseHedgehog Thirding this. I'd just write Command off as an Alternate Universe What-If sort of scenario. Maybe throw in a call back via black hole shenanigans. But Assault's story was great and flawed though the game may be I REALLY loved it. That said it is worth remembering that Nintendo kinda HATES canon because it gets in the way of gameplay. They wanna make a game first and then slap a story on later. That's the real reason for the constant remakes of the first game. They even said in an interview that Star Fox Zero was NOT a reboot, remake, prequel or sequel and was just "Zero". It was not some big planned super important game, it was "We don't have a single player game that fully utilizes the Wii U gamepad...what can we come up with...OH! How about a space flight game! Like Star Fox! YEAH! Make it a Star Fox game. Plot? Uhh...Andross attacks the Lylat System, that's the plot of Star Fox, right? Right. Good. Done." (That's also why you can't change the controls).
@byronlyons35484 жыл бұрын
@@EclipseHedgehog You know what else makes her saying "Andross did nothing wrong" a good kick in the nuts to fans? Is that she knows it was Andross, and how he put both Sauria and the Lylat system at risk, just to have his own ass revived to torment/rule Lylat once more. She KNOWS that he's bad, but still says that anyways. Like they not only forgot what she's about, but what she's already experienced. To them, it really was "Continuity? What's that?"

@@GELTONZ I've written it off as bad fanfiction since the day it was released lol even at a young age I knew it was that bad. I even remember them planning to have the sequel take place in the middle of command. Shadow the hedgehog much? Anyway this also kinda ruins any chances of Krysyal returning though she was Rares baby at first. She's wanted badly in smash since brawl but only got to be an assist trophy but make way for more fire emblem! But yes it does make sense. But then again Starfox has proven that it can be great story and lore wise. Not just character wise with their memorable one liners, its since then evolved beyond that and can do so even more. I'd say try the mass effect route where you get to control Fox in the great fox and speak with your team mates, the more you do, the less they ask for help during missions, more helpful power ups, secret routes, tips to defeat optional bosses, etc.

Still I was hoping fox to straight up bitch slap her at that point, I did NOT see her as the sweet, kind and teasing woman from assault that I grew to like anymore. Because I don't think she was barely given time to be a character in adventures. I mean, when I first saw her my first initial thought was; 'Who is this? I don't want to play as her I want to play as Fox!" and then Fox gave her googoo eyes. Let's just say a shipper was born that day XD but aside being adventurous and mysterious she's not delved too deep upon mostly because most the game was scrapped thanks to Miyamoto's involvement in "Dinosaur Planet" to make it starfox instead. I love StarFox Assault so much. For both what it did with the characters and the amount of freedom available in the gameplay. I think the characters, Krystal, Peppy and Slippy especially were done a lot of justice. Krystal's solemn speech at the end, Peppy making a heroic sacrifice (albeit surviving). And Slippy sticking up for himself from time to time. And even upping the stakes by having the StarWolf villains team up against the Aparoid collective. I really hope Nintendo takes notes from this game and builds on it.

For example: In Mission 5 when chasing down Pigma through the asteroid field, if you look in the background during the boss fight, you can see Sector Y in the distance. This actually makes perfect sense when you consider how close the asteroid field and Sector Y are when on the map screen on 64. Moreover, you're chasing him after you were on Fichina, which isn't that far from that asteroid field either. Like, how cool is that!?

Honestly still have no idea why nintendo decided "yeah, let's not make a sequel to assault and actually do something new again. lets instead reboot the series back to "fox and crew fight andross again for the third time"." I loved seeing how starwolf's shaky alliances were explored and changed in interesting ways in assault(such as pigma being kicked out for being too much of a scummy piece of crap even for them, andrew going off to try to revive the empire of the uncle he was fanatically obsessed with, panther being an excellent new edition to the crew, etc) and we got to fight a central antagonist that was actually different this time! The gameplay also truly felt like a successor to 64 in the flight and landmaster sections(with yeah, the comparatively small bits of on-foot sections being average at best and being a weak point of the game but not taking up so much time as to be an irredeemably crippling flaw that ruins the entire game like many claim it to be) all it was missing was the branching paths replay incentives.(which left it feeling a bit too short. an issue which zero would proceed to also have to an even greater degree)
@EclipseHedgehog4 жыл бұрын
My favorite as well. Starfox snes: what story? read the comics but it hasn't aged well in terms of character interaction. Starfox 2: again, no story. Starfox 64: redo of snes. not much, pretty episodic. The characters shine the most. 64 3D: remake. doesn't count. Zero: another redo of 64. (look Nintendo I know less is more to you but i don't want starfox to go the Mario route in an endless war with Andross. SAMUS has more villains than mother brain!) they had their chance to make an anime and delve more deeper into fox and andross but they didn't. sure Andross has more lines to make him sound less psychotic and cliche but, heck "A fox in space." makes him even more pimp than that. Adventures: Wasn't supposed to be a starfox game to begin with but, its alright-ish. "Farewell beloved Falco" was ok too. Assault: The only good one next to 64. Very sci-fi, very high stakes, fits with adventures and 64 nicely. 64 ends with fox wanting to start things alone, then by adventures he accepts help slowly and by assault his whole squadron are there to aid him. poetic. the interaction is right up there with 64. Starwolf's in their prime here (though they're easy as piss to beat even on gold difficulty), so freaking badass. Also my favorite in terms of design. Command: mean spirited full of out of character moments and wtf endings. Also the writer/s forgot or ignored that krystal is psychic. She'd know why Fox would dump her. but no gotta cash on the Japanese hatred for her. and go figure; my least favorite in terms of design and of course; Nintedo goes with this the most with that ugly bell shaped head for fox. Starlink: a bit of a side story, was nice to see their hunt for starwolf.

I wish the new Star Fox games were more like Assault. It was so badass launching a bomb from the Arwing, and then getting out mid-flight to shoot it again with your rocket launcher or other weapon while standing on top of your Arwing. The ground combat was fun and like a more in depth version of the plane combat. It felt awesome to land your arwing, shoot some stuff and then jump back in. It's too bad there will probably never be another game like it...
@danielmunoz12759 ай бұрын
I disagree a bit here. The ground combat controlling Fox was a bit clunky. His tank control made for some awkward movement that was a bit annoying. Specially when you had to evade shots from enemies in halls or tight corners (the side roll is effective on more open spaces). If they do another Star Fox on the same vain of Assault I hope they improve the land combat (specially the character's movement). Now, the fact that you can be on land and hop into an arwing or landmaster. Yeah, that ROCKS!

Star Fox Assault is such an underrated game in the Star Fox franchise and I love it for many reasons. The story is way better off as a liner story telling game than a multiple path as there doesn't seem to make a specific connection point in the timeline in the middle from start to finish. But getting that idea aside as it was part of SF64 / Zero's game, the story is about an alien invasion for galactic conquest to become the ultimate being in the universe. What I love in the story is how that the darker themes are played out like someone actually wanting you to kill him or her, teaming up with a long time arch rival with different beliefs and point of views, and how one of the main characters aka Pigma and maybe Andrew Oikonny died in the story. The character development of many of the characters are amazing as it gives them more personality and depth, especially with Wolf, going from a generic mercenary to a unlikely friend. The Aparoids are the most dangerous creatures in the Star Fox universe as they pretty much are cold hearted monsters looking to increase it's knowledge. In a matter of fact, they're so comparable to the Flood from Halo for these reasons, as I did a comparison battle on reddit and maybe twitter. They collect not only living creatures for infection but also infect computer AIs. The gameplay is a lot of fun by not only keeping the vehicles, but also the on-foot segments as well, mixing some of the most action pack missions in Star Fox, as it feels like the original Star Wars Battlefront 2. The music is the best in the series with it's orchestra and passion, the visuals while not on the same level as Star Fox Adventures is a very impressive looking game with some of the best vehicle designs.

This was very good. I never thought of the Aparoid Queen that way, but yeah they definitely are very intimidating. You explain why well! Also I don't really think of the Aparoids not showing up for years as so much as a plot hole. It can easily be said something like perhaps last encounter they managed to be driven back so well and were just amassing their forces for another greater strike, or they just had been attacking different worlds and now have gotten onto Lylat. Also you do a good job at explaining how well the character development is here, especially for Pigma. Yes Pigma is definitely irredeemable, but I find him to be a villain you love to hate, and the way Fox just stares at him after his demise shows how much he feels "good riddance you greedy back-stabber!" I should mention that. Another point against Command though, is that when you fight the unexplained space Pigma Cube, he mentions that "I spared Star Wolf because they were good friends," yet that contradicts both this game, and the rest of the series. I mean with how Star Wolf kicked him out, and how selfish he is, he would not think such a thing even if he did work on their side once., made his appearance in Command not only out-of-place but out-of-character too. Should mention since you hate Command so much. Also the intro stage with Andrew Oikonny was a good follow-up. I mean better than just having Andross come back in some convoluted way like in Adventures, we have his next of kin follow in his footsteps, which is a great follow-up, then seeing him get wrecked by the Aparoids shows how they outdo Andross by far! The Aparoids kinda remind me of the Necromorphs in Dead Space, except half machine and less scary, but still awesome! If Nintendo DOES make another game (and not just a reboot or some crossover event like the Starlink Battle For Atlas one), I think it will be hard to design a new threat more intimidating and cool than the Aparoids.

Wile personally I'm not the biggest fan of Assault I do think it's an excellent template for what a modern Star Fox could look like in part. Tighten up controls while enabling you to quickly change between ground and air options for combat would go a long way for a new game. Combine that with something like Starlinks openly exploreable universe, a story that breaks away from 64's shackles, and now we have a game that could bring back old fans and garner a whole new generation of people to fall in love with the Star Fox series.

This was an excellent break down of the plot! I really enjoyed your analysis of the characters, and it's always nice to see someone give Slippy & Krystal some credit. people often treat the two of them like Joke characters, with Slippy being seen as Incompetent and Krystal as nothing but Sex appeal, but assault, and in turn your analysis, did a great job of solidifying them as Characters with personalities and not just 1 dimension archetypes. (The same goes for the rest of the team, with Falco being more that just a Snarky Jerk, Peppy being more than a Walking Tutorial, Etc.) Assault is my personal favorite Star Fox game. while it does miss a few marks here and there, Like some of the Voice Acting needing a couple extra takes and a few minor things with the controls (though I never had TOO much trouble with them), I honestly believe it's the best game in the franchise. while it may have been Namco that developed it, I honestly hope that Nintendo will take another shot at creating a game like it in the future, instead of just Re-telling the story of Star Fox 1/64 again. On a side note: I don't know if it's just me but, the Aparoids always really reminded me of the Borg from Star Trek: Next Generation, with them being a strange unknown race of Living/Computer Hybrids bent on Assimilating all Life, and the fact that they're eradicated with a self destruct program after the destruction of their Queen. Maybe somebody at Namco was just binging Next Gen while writing the story or something, I dunno'. XD

Assault, while I've never played it myself or even watched a playthrough of, is one many examples that prove that games staring anthro animals can be and can succeed at being serious and/or dark instead of "hurr durr fuzzy hooman aminal gayme cin't b derk cuz chillins play fuzzy aminal gaymez." Which I find to be completely barbaric and ridiculous, I don't care if it's a story about a blue hedgehog that runs real fast and his technicolour friends with other superpowers fighting a tyrannical egg-shaped human, a story about a high schooler bitten by a radioactive spider and becoming a spider-themed superhero fighting animal-themed villains, or the latest in a long line of raccoon master thieves who steals from master criminals with the help of a hippo strongman and turtle techie. Any story can work if you put the work into it and use the rules of the world properly.

Very true. It may been more than likely that the Scout could’ve also been linked to the Queen. And a bigger if, might have been that James MacCloud might’ve played some part in the scout’s demise. If they ever reboot Star Fox again (which you know they will), have the first game re-introduce Miyu and Faye (I think those are their names) from Star Fox 2 as rookies who joined Team Star Fox shortly before Andross's invasion. And have the option to play as any of the six members of Star Fox as the "leader" for that mission, kinda like how Zero had that one level where you play as Peppy, even though he's solo. If an ally gets shot down during a level, they can't be chosen as leader until they're back in action (however certain missions will force you to have Fox as the leader. So if Fox is shot down right before said mission, he'll instantly get revived). Then, have the Krystal game (possibly Adventures 2.0) with Fox, Slippy, and Peppy still in Star Fox, Falco left like in that one manga sequel to Star Fox 64, only showing up at the end, while Miyu and Faye? One of them is still with the team while the other is back in Corneria trying to raise money on her own so she can help with the team's funding. And the rest? For now, same deal as the SF reboot, with Krystal replacing Peppy in the field.
@nightshroud96713 жыл бұрын
Would be cool to see Miyu and Faye right there. The fact they officially released Star Fox 2 makes Miyu and Faye official there now. So now they are most likely be able to be used there.

9:25 I don't know why but I like giving awful characters redemption arcs. For example I did this with Pigma. To not make this comment a harry potter novel I'll just summarize it. After Pigma's Aparoid body was destroyed an unknown force took his body and transferred it to another planet. There he encountered a civilization called the Xyls, a lynx like species that specializes in mental and spiritual abilities. Around two years later after assault (Command doesn't exist in this timeline, I have a trash free diet.) He fixes his ship with the help of the Xyls, who in during those two years helped Pigma basically become the opposite of who he was (his personality is what I'd call a blanced fusion of Wolf, Fox, and Peppy). After saying his goodbyes he leaves the planet and lays low to avoid being detected by the cornerian army or just any military force. Extra details: - An ability Pigma now possesses is the power to manipulate machines to his will. A side effect after being connected to the Aparoid Queen. -Due the transfer and the training he did on the planet, Pigma's appearance has changed significantly, but one could still tell it's him. -lastly (because I like making characters suffer) Pigma now deals with Hallucinations of Fox's father James Mccloud, because of the years of guilt hitting him all at once. So yeah that's just something I came up with.

Ahh. Pigma Dengar. Interesting character with a long story of betrayal. Which begs the question. What if Nintendo made a new/old StarFox based on the original James McCloud, Pigma Dengar and Peppy Hare before his treason? That would be a return to roots and form. And a worthy revival of the franchise.

One thing I heard from the internet is that one of the reasons Miyamoto doesn't want to continue Star Fox or F-Zero is because he doesn't believe he can make the series better. He tried to re-do the first game in Star Fox, but every time he seemed to fail. He thinks that Star Fox: Assault and F-Zero GX were the pinnacles of their franchises and there is no way to do better than these games. Assault is my favourite and first Star Fox game of all time, and nothing can out-do it for me. The music, the story, the gameplay and of course the art design of the game all feels like the perfect continuation of the Star Fox world. If Nintendo ever wants to do something better with Star Fox, all they need to do is something new. Not different, just new. Just like this game did.
@tacdragzag746410 ай бұрын
Tbh, a few things just hit me that if at all supportable make this story even better (It's just one big theory): So the aparoids attacked once, wiped out an armada and disappeared but then did nothing for a while until they come back in full force in Assault yet when exactly do they attack and where? Why after the conflict of Venom vs Corneria has largely concluded to be precise while Corneria and venomian remnant forces are angaged in conflict and their first target specifically is Andrew, Andross' nephew leading said remnants. There are a bunch of neat little details here that I want to believe are intentional since: You can spin this way way further: Andrew was a member of Star Wolf. Star Wolf was affiliated with Andross and after his defeat surely had to deal with a bunch of issues. He as Andross' nephew of course took this a step further but think- Who else was in Star Wolf that we saw was no longer in the team in Assault? Pigma. And what does Pigma do in Assault? Why he is more or less a puppet/agent for the aparoids until he is fully assimilated. Now. What else was Pigma in the past? A member of the original Star Fix team. And in it with him were Peppy and James McCloud. Now in Assault we get very strong hints that both Peppy and James had some dealings with aparoids- Namely Peppy's reaction to the first aparoid showing itself "It can't be" And obviously, that James is one of the voices the Aparoid Queen uses. On that last one: We could see during Peppy's sacrifice scene that he was slightly infected by aparoids already, though not taken over like Pepper or Pigma. So even a partial assimilation one can recover from is enough for the queen to have their voice as despite him being fully assimilated and then freed, Pepper's voice was also in there (also ROB's) We can thereby infer that James, Peppy and by extend Pigma likely helped fight off the aparoids the first time they appeared. Given that one aparoid destroyed an entire fleet, one can theorize that it was the OG Starfox team actually defeating the thing. And that that defeat made the aparoids too scared to attack after. But after the conflict with Venom, James was dead, Pigma had betrayed Star Fox, leaving the team in disarray for a bit, Pigma being he most important player here. Pigma also would've known that Andrew was the one leading his uncle's forces as a successor, so I assume that at some point while Andrew was rallying the venomian remnants and Sar Fox was busy on Sauria, that Pigma thought "Hm, now that Andross is gone, I want a new big guy to follow to power. What about that Aparoid thing? Surely I can contact and help that now." It would befit a greedy, sleazy guy like him. To tell these nightmares "Hey, the Lylat system just got through war, you could easily take out one of the leaders of one faction while they are both relatively weakened still" It would explain why Pigma is so connected to the aparoids, why he introduces himself as "pulling the strings" in Assault, why the Aparoids went straight for Andrew and why Peppy has a distinct reaction to seeing an Aparoid after all this time and why the Queen has James as one of her impersonations. If any of this is accurate this story is so cool-

If Nintendo would've been smart, they would've continued the series from this Star Fox Assault instead of rebooting the series AGAIN about 10 years later. Consistency is what this series had been lacking, and making a game like Command right after this title was a jarring change from Assault. With that said, Peppy should've died in the explosion. It would've made more sense (good luck escaping from an exploding ship while in space). Plus, the ending scene would've been more powerful. The ending that namco picked felt like something out of a Saturday morning cartoon, which was odd, given how serious the game was until that point.

The biggest problem with Assault's story is that it's too short. That, and it focuses a little bit too much on fighting aparoids (even though that's the point, the gameplay suffers from a lack of enemy variety). My dream story would be a linear story with branching paths, determined by the decisions made in the game. These would affect events that take place deeper and deeper into the story (call me crazy, but I think Call of Duty: Black Ops II would be the ideal model).

Yeah Assault was so crazy... Loved the Aparoids and the way the characters advanced in it... Just Chapter 7 holy heck: So many enemies are just cornerian soldiers fused with their equipment, be it fighters or on foot, basically what Pepper begs you to prevent him from becoming, and we saw before how far it can get with Pigma, that and the General is moaning in pain all throughout the battle... All these soldiers went through that process. I think Fox only has one line regarding that like "These things, you think they could be-" And honestly I wish more attention had been drawn to that, it's so crazy to think about: You are killing the remains of former allies. Maybe I'm just a sucker for parasitic hivemind alien menaces, but the aparoids really take the cake above many sci fi villains. I mean they consume machines and life alike. Sure they never got to go as far as the Flood in Halo for example, and have a kill switch for a happy ending but it's not hard to imagine the Aparoids destroying entire Galaxies. The fact that Wolf and his team decide to help fight them says a lot. I mean heck the Aparoids even chose targets based on how emotionally invested others might be as we saw with Sauria. It is not irrational to assume they sent Pepper to fight Fox in the hopes that that would lead to Fox locking up and being unable to fight. They understand emotions and weaponize them, something other hivemind menaces have not really done. I can't think of any at least. Gameplaywise it was also stellar to me: So many weapons and creative enremy types that would react to them... Like some enemies are bigger and shielded and you need heavier guns to punch through that, at times using Grenades and mines could even be useful. The multiplayer was so awesome, me friends and siblings played it to death, so many characters, vehicles, weapons, maps, modes... With unique music, cool details, etc etc etc... I also enjoyed the art style, all the vehicles looked so much more futuristic. I'm so happy others can see how awesome this game was. It's a shame we seem to be stuck just copying Star Fox 64 over and over.

This game is legitimately one of my favorite games of all time, and easily one of Nintendo's most underrated. I was introduced to StarFox through Smash Bros Melee, and I quickly fell in love with the characters. This game was the perfect game at the perfect time for me. It was my first StarFox game, and it really delved into the characters the way I had wanted to see. It has the best story, the best music (both renditions of old themes as well as new), and I completely agree it serves as the satisfying conclusion the series desires. Weirdly enough Starlink is the only other "Star Fox" game that came close to delving deeper into the characters like this game did. I really hope we get more games in this series one day, that aren't just rehashes of the war against Andross (seriously 6 out of 8 starfox games revolve around Andross as the main villain 😆).

Something I noticed was how the Aparoid queen would shoot the weird gold bubbles that andross would shoot at you too in SF64. Also how did the queen know who James McCloud was ? Peppy also hinted he knew what the aparoid were before Assault. A lot of cool connections and foreshadowing that Namco put into the game. Nintendo does not deserve this IP if you ask me.

i absolutely love Starfox Assault, it's storytelling at its finest, and it does really feel like a Starfox game, something most games from the saga struggle to accomplish. my only big complain about the game is how badly they treated the character of Krystal, the game falls under the classic "men don't know how to write female characters" issue, she's so one dimensional, she's over sexualized, half her personality is being Fox's love interest, and the other half is "girls have feeling right? let's give her feelings!", which shows most prominently in one of the worst and cheesiest lines of dialogue in the game: "i am protected by everyones warm feelings", of course it can be justified by her ability of reading minds, but it definitely doesn't come out right, at least for me. the Sauria mission is a pretty... annoying one, but seeing another side of Krystal during that mission gives her a lot more depth, at least for a moment.
