I love this video. Very relaxing and informative. I saw it a while ago and it has stuck in my mind. Going out to play disc golf this fall i wanted to be as cool as you and have both charcoal and fluid fuel versions. I went with a green box charcoal from company called stansport and a beautiful orange one from Zippo (though i still really like the Japanese one you have-maybe i will collect one in the future) Thank you for making this video. Stay well! Cheers!

Zippo has a Peacock-style handwarmer, which runs a little cooler. A couple of degrees. If the Peacock is too warm for you, the Zippo might be better.

thank you for the video! does the peacock smell of petrol when being used?
@spookycrow1 Жыл бұрын
Hey, no the peacock doesn't smell of petrol, at least by using good quality Zippo fuel which is very clean, could be differently if using cheap fuel, but than performance would be bad as well. The Peacock hand warmer would not have survived or reached popularity since 1920 if it would stink by using it ;-) Great device, well worth it ;-)

@spookycrow1 I bought one because your video and I love it but would you say Zippo fluid is better that Ronsonol?
@spookycrow1 Жыл бұрын
@@tregaricus00 Honestly, ;-) I don't know Ronsonol. Never heard of it before, but if it is a clean light fuel for lighters like the Zippo type, it should be fin.

Has anyone found a charcoal stick that actually stays burning after you close the lid?
@spookycrow116 күн бұрын
Yep, make sure that the charcoal stick is glowing well by generally blow on to the amber, wait a bit before close the lid, eventually keep blowing in to the cast on one of the long ends, there is a small gab to allow to blow right on the the end of the burning stick. Eventually check any time, by opening the case, but in generally, once the handwarmer starts getting warm it all works. Nevertheless the charcoal sometimes contains to much moisture or is from bad qualify, don't let this put you off using the handwarmer, this are dead simple to use and do work perfectly.

Bonjour so which one is the best ?
@spookycrow1 Жыл бұрын
Depends on the needs ;-) I do like both for what they can offer. 1st I like the simple to operate and cheaper Charcoal unit for what it is, taking a bit longer to get warm but not getting too hot, so it's working very well at the food end of a sleeping bag for some time as well as a no-brainer pocket warmer for all around needs. 2nd, the peacock unit on the other hand has a more elegant appearance and has its strength in fast heating up to recover from cold hands if required and produces constant heat over a longer period of time. I wouldn't judge one better for the other, both have up and downsides by direct comparison, but do their job equal well. ;-) But hey, depending on the situation, I would grab the charcoal unit for bushcraft and longer period of times in remote areas and conditions due to its simplicity, the Peacock unit for more urban areas or if someone is carrying a fuel lighter anyway to share the fuel for the heater and lighter at the same time, only carry one fuel source for both together. It's more a preference thing, I guess. ;-)

Peacock, my opinion and choice from S.Korea:-) I've used more than 20years(got from my grandfather who born in 1923. Means been used at least 50years) every winter. It goes down to -20c° here.

ok merci 👍

The giant peacock produced in South Korea does have batch problems Standard model, mini model will be much better But you're wrong about one thing Peacock can stop the combustion process and save the internal fuel. You can remove the catalytic tip for one minute Place a plastic bag sheet at the furnace mouth and cover the catalytic head
@spookycrow1 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your addition, yeah I have been aware of extinguishing the Peacock by the method of suffocating the unit from the needed oxygen to let it extinguish, and yes I haven't mentioned this to prevent people from injure themselves if not carefully doing so, and yes plain physics will work of cause that's a fact ;-) Take the oxygen away and it will die down. But hey, this burner is getting so hot after some time, that it would be a bit of a challenge using this plastic cap for doing so. A suitable small closed metal cap would be a great addition if that would fit easily over the catalytic cap without removing it 1st, the catalytic cap is the hottest part and sitting quite snug on the unit, not that easy to remove.

The red one is more bushcraft suitable in case you drop it in low light conditions to be able to find it that's why hunters wear reflective bright orange clothes to be seen and soldiers wear camouflage..bureaucracy is not the same as military as bushcraft stays in wilderness long time soldiers tactics is to get job done as fast as possible and get out of wilderness,different mindsets
@spookycrow1 Жыл бұрын
Yep indeed a different mindset, you are right with the bright orange clothes of hunters (orange is the one colour that appears grey in the eyes of most wildlife game), but hunters only making use of it if going in groups with other trigger-happy guys to prevent getting shot by mistake in dense undergrown or woods. In Germany this is not usually the case, from my experiences, since group hunting in generally is only organized a few times in autumn as a larger event and very regulated for safety, not all year round anyway. German hunters mainly sneak in to a single spot, sitting still and quiet without movements waiting somewhere in a hideout to shoot a specific selected deer or fox, may a wild hog in early morning hours, most of the time they are on their own or leased plot without anyone other is allowed hunting there, very different to US style hunting. But yes I have been on a hunting party in my youth where someone caught by a strayed shotgun pellet right between his eyes on the forehead, this was by luck only a deeper imprint, nothing seriously. Well yes you are right that the red and bright colours are easy to spot if this hand warmer may get dropped being clumsy, but it would not drop very far, rather just straight down onto the feet. Well, that's why I'm mentioned that the charcoal unit got this anti slip outer fabric, which sticking very well with gloves and even cold bare hands. Talking about military issued gear.. yeah typically squady don't care about loosing any gear in the field, (unless it's their rifle and have to take responsibility for that) other lesser valued equipment is easy to replace without fuss by just asking for replacement once back at base paid by taxpayer anyway, not out of their own pocket. For bushcrafter who spend their own money on the gear, this is rather a larger loss and could render into a very inconvenient situation, or at least freezing hands for the rest of the weekend. And colour wise, for bushcraft enthusiast it is rather important not to be spotted in the undergrown, to avoid inconvenient detection by over reacting law addicted square heads among the average population, who instantly calling for police or other Gov departments if seeing someone sitting in the woods handling a knife or having a cooking fire, for doing suspected unlawful things that don't match the average consumer behaver this day's. So the green cover coming in very handy.
