I could be wrong, but I'm fairly certain you are only able to punish when you are not staggered on a block. You have guard 5, making punishing much easier. The guard points are stronger blocks, and less likely to stagger. In other words, the more ranks in guard you have, the less important guard points are for the purposes of punishing.

You can also go into the saed/savage axe/shield charge by holding B or ○ into YB or ^○ twice instead of 3 times. The benefit is it charges the philes faster. So you can save the charge, hold B then YB twice and then charge the shield, the axe, SAED or AED. This helps to go back into savage axe mode faster once you saeded or savage axe ran out.

CB is great for covering lots of bases and adapting to the situation. Sometimes, you feel like certain weapons are bad matchups for certain monsters, but the CB has enough options to really use everywhere. You have Sword and Shield mode for more mobility and of course, a good shield. Axe Mode is for huge damage, and for pulling bigger Motion Values. Don’t forget morph attacks, and charging your sword when it might be smarter to play in SnS Mode as opposed to Axe Mode. Depending on phial type, you also get elemental advantages, or KO potential with Impact Phials. Similar to the Switch Axe, if you get into the flow and end up pulling a flashy, uninterrupted combo, it can be hugely rewarding. If you haven’t, be sure to give the CB a shot, it’s super fun. Sincerely, a CB player.

Moves that have Guard points GP: 1. beginning of Morph slash(the instant the sword is put into the shield) most accesible and easy to time 2. end of Spinning Slash (too long to execute) 3. end of elemental roundslash (basically the same as spinning slash) 4. beginning of savage axe slash (the shield will be in front for a very short window) 5. unsheathing into axe mode 6. end of morph slash (just like spinning slash)
@GriFFonRec49 ай бұрын
I'd say the round slash GPs are for safety. If you can land a round slash you are 100% safe from the monster since the GP will protect you until you can act again. The morph slash and savage axe transformation GP are for the ability to cancel INTO a guard point, like if you are in the middle of striking the monster and are vulnerable, you can cancel whatever you are doing into Morph Slash GP/cancel SAED into a GP. So I'd consider the attacks with GP in the starting frames more like parries than actual guard points.

I'm disagreeing politely on the "It's impact phials so we must use Savage axe" line. SAED and SA are highly situational. Maybe something along the lines of Small opening (Punishing moves) - AED Big opening (Exhausts, trips)- SAED Huge opening (KOs) - Savage Axe would make more sense to new players. That isn't the end of it thanks to Hitzone values and the individual monsters but it's a good starting point. @FMicrowave4 жыл бұрын
I feel that CB is actually one of the simplest weapons in the game. If you are able to utilize its full moveset, especially since the axe moves were buffed in Iceborne, you're basically using it correctly. Guard pointing and counter attacking is such a straightforward concept it only gets more complicated as the monsters get more aggressive. CB has flaws in that the AED and SAED have long recovery animations, so I imagine the higher level application of this is counting stun damage to tell when it is safe to use them. EDIT: Actually I'm wrong, I didn't realize that although Impact Phials deal explosive damage, which is the same regardless of part hit, it will only cause KO if on the head, just like for blunt attacks. I discovered this through the "Hello World" overlay on PC. Maybe everyone knew this, but it's changed how I play. CB is a head-sniping weapon with a good down combo, like a somewhat more defensive and varied hammer.

Also for the others, fastest way to charge phials is charged rising slash + shield trust (x2) loop. As a CB main and 700hrs into the game, I can tell you that CB is the most diverse and versatile weapon to use as it has one of the highest dps and the ability to shield + guard point to deal KO damage to the monster. You can guard point the monster's roar and counter it with the SAED slam which is incredible so you wont ever need earplugs. Knowing guard point is the most important thing as you will have to learn the monster's moves as well while you're learning the weapon itself, probably the reason why alot of people stay away from it. I can give you a few biggest tips for you guys not to afraid to use it :) 1) SAED (Super amped elemental discharge) will deal higher dps as you can discharge it faster than the Savage Axe Mode with faster transitioning 2) Savage Axe Mode is only viable if you want to take down smaller monster (Kirin, Rajang....etc) because they have such a small body and hit zone value, you won't hit all of your 6 phials (assuming you have the magazine jewel, which you should). Or to try to hit a flying monster with the forward axe slam or uppercut. Savage axe mode will increase the damage of the initial hit of your SAED but it's really slow so might as well like I said above just discharge unless you're waking up a monster for that multiplier. I was able to achive 1005* damage on the initial hit, 400 followed up when you slammed it down and 150x6(phials) damage to the monster when it's sleeping. THAT'S ALOT OF DAMAGE -bonus: if you're in Savage Axe, hit Y or Triangle then combo it with B or O (xbox or ps), that's a 2 for 1 since you're only consuming 1 phial but swinging the axe 2 times to get the 2 discharged out 3) Learn the 3 most important guard points as it's IMPORTANT. Guard point is whenever you're transitioning either from SnS to Axe or the other way around and having your shield facing the monster with very tiny window so you'll have to be PRECISE. Once the monster hit that guard point, chances are you're actually dealing KO damage. 4) if the monster is down but you dont have any phials and need to charge it up to get the SAED down. Press B or O on PlayStation and left analog down to backward slash then slam down your SAED, trust me it's alot faster than having to roll backward, plus you'll have less movement and can position yourself better to get a full out of your SAED slam 5) Guard up is optional but it's good to have if you're playing defensively or you're not using any dragon damage weapon to prevent Elder Dragons from using their super nova
@SS2LP4 жыл бұрын
Thunder Lordz Eh technically savage axe is better on certain builds. I just consider it less viable as you need much larger openings for it to do its damage. Going pound for pound with 6 phials savage axe will actually do about double the damage but again you need a huge opening to do that damage. SAED and AED are better for damage while the monster is up and active. Also savage axe eats sharpness for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
@SeraphimVolker4 жыл бұрын
Back in 4 Ultimate I used axe mode a lot because that's where your dps came from, but with World I've been focusing on using it almost like the lance is used. I stick with sword mode a lot except when there's a good SAED punish. Using guard points has allowed me to always be dealing damage and have amazing defense thanks to my guard skill and having the shield charged. All in all the duality of the weapon and the choice to do one or both just makes it my soul mate for sure 💓

One thing to mention about going into SAED manually is that using Y+B to start moves you forward. if you want to use SAED from the position you started without moving too much, you can use only Y to stay in place and go into the usual path of Y+B Y+B. using only Y might also be a little bit faster than using Y+B, though im not 100% sure of that

If your shield is already charged(glowing) and your phials are empty but they are brown or any color. At the same time you want to charge your phials(make the phials turn white) you can also charge your sword(make it glow) meaning you are filling your phials(making them turn white) and charge your sword (make it glow). That way you can fill your phials and charge your sword in one go.

Just as a caveat to the guard point/punish comment at ~21:12. It depends on the animation. You can punish without guard point on a weak attack, but you cannot punish without it if it is a powerful attack. Think enemies like Diablos and Rathalos. Their attacks will force you into an animation unless you use guard point, which prevents you from countering with your axe or sword right away.

Not sure if this was mentioned in the video, but gaurd pointing is effectively an extra level of the Guard skill. I don't think it does any damage. A charged shield is also effectively an extra point for Guard skill. It will do damage though, regardless if guard pointing. So you don't need 5 Guard skills. 3 is the most you need, as the GP and charged shield will get you to 5.

@nastysushi92904 жыл бұрын
21:00 you're able to SAED/AED after a simple guard just because you had guard 5 in that bad defensive set. You have to guard point when you only build for guard 1 because it reduces the knockback of the monster attack enough so you can AED/SAED right after. If the monster atk deals more knockback and you cant follow suit with AED/SAED after a simple guard... 29:15 you can do the side hop after any sword mode move, not just the charged slash.. @@TheMaeximum that depends on how you have your settings. you can either press O+left stick down or you can have O+left stick goes opposite of character sight. both have their pros and cons but after i started to use sns for supp it was quite difficult to get that move done how you want it. especially if you wanna PR dance around.

So i don't know if you know this but that "brown" charge is supposed to be "Red" charge and you may be color blind. Redgreen color blind tend to complain about red looking brown so it might be something to look into

About the shield thrust you can also go into it after any attack in SnS mode except for the shield thrust.

this is awesome. I like opening w y+b because of the forward lunge. typically if I find myself w phials w charges shield and savage, I’ll charge the sword if I have a moment

Focus also charges your ‘Charge Slash’ faster. Recommend at least Focus 2. It’s a noticeably faster charged slash
@jvstdare71194 жыл бұрын
True but you need Focus 3 for it to be really usefull. With focus 3 you can use another combo to get phials charged faster. With 2 it won't work.

I have hundreds of hours on CB and recently I found you can press down+Y instead of the saed for impact CBS.😅
@painsenpai014 жыл бұрын
Oddly enough I find Charge Blade far easier to learn then Hunting Horn simply because for me personally maintaining damage with Hunting Horn AND keeping your buffs active is something extremely focus reliant or for the user to be VERY accustomed to playing the weapon, with CB use just need to focus on two phial types Impact and Power Element but HH has Elemental, Non Elemental, Status and buffs that you need to consider when using it, that's just to much on top of sharpness management to keep track of

I personally don't think the CB mechanics are that complicated. The biggest thing is the micromanagement, it's an incredible hassle, not complicated just super annoying. At the end of the day, SA is very fun though, the sae attacks are satisfying as hell. PS: Can I just say I love your way of speaking lmao your little chuckles are like ASMR!

Few things I've noticed: - When you explain gap closers, you made it sound like the input is just Y for dash slam and just B after weak slash for sliding slash. In reality it's forward + Y and any direction + B. And as others pointed out, you can follow with sliding slash after many attacks, not just weak slash. - You never mentioned that when cancelling SAED into AED, the "pull back" is relative to the character not the camera. - For guard pointing into punish, that depends into knockback strength. If you get high knockback, you cannot perform SAED from guard, which is why people talk about guard pointing, cause naturally guard pointing reduce knockback strength (as does charged shield). You have shown your Safi build, which only had one point in guard, and it would be much more important to guard point with that build. I also noticed that in iceborne the idea of punishing monster after guard (or guard point) with SAED or even AED doesn't work most of the time cause most attacks don't leave a big enough opening for both.
@maverickhannoun66584 жыл бұрын
there is one guard point that is super nice to land, right at the beggining of the savage axe animation, there is a guard point, the frame is very small thaugh, but saved my life so many times :D there are plenty of guard point animation, but the swich axe guard oint is the one that have the largest frame, so it is very easy to land, but is very puishing if you dont land it, as the recovery frames after the move is long

@eleeyah47574 жыл бұрын
Do you have some level of color blindness in the red spectrum maybe? Those phials are red, rather than brown. Could be that you see brown due to color, contrast, or color temperature settings. Or you might want to visit a doctor and do a color blindness check. Really great guide though. Relaxed and easy to follow. Good job! :)

Would love a Sword and Shield guide because I'm just now realizing the potential it has with Slinger Bursts always being available + having Slinger Capacity Secret maxed out. You can make so many openings by quickly tenderizing with the claw uppercut and then using the ammo that drops 100% of the time after said attack. All the little changes that happened including the perfect rush buff made me a huge fan of the weapon (whereas before I would lean on my Charge Blade experience and use SnS like a crutch when I wasn't good enough to fight a monster with the former).

As someone that uses the CB when I first got mhw in the beginning. I thought it was cool to switch and use two weapons pretty much. Since then, I've tried other weapons and they are much more simpler lol.
