the peltier effect works much more efficiently when the temperature differentiates from one side to the other so instead of just trying to get one side extremely hot try keeping the other side cool at the same time :) in general these are not very efficient for producing electricity but they are rather useful for pumping heat energy and these are mostly used in those portable electric fridges/hotbox and are great fun for messing around with whilst experimenting

For those that think laws of thermodynamics were broken.. no. This works because of a temperature difference the hot and cold side. Without actively cooling the cold side, the generator would reach thermo equilibrium and no voltage would be produced. ~electrical engineer

At the end (3:02) the wire magically changes and it's a totally different one, also the Thermoelectric Peltier Cooler's place changes from where it was when he was charging his phone in the garden. This is kind of suspicous because both times he charges the phone the wire goes behind the stove and comes back as a totally different one.

You could get even more voltage if you hook up these thermal generators in series all around the can... Also you could attack small heat sinks to the outside part of the thermal generator to help cool it on the cold side. This would also boost your output voltage. Inside thermal generators are 2 different types of metal that is what is causing the thermal-electric effect. And I thought heat was the death of electrical energy, it seems you can convert heat back into electrical energy. So much for the laws of thermal-dynamics.

This can burn your phone since the peltier will eventually start generating more than 5V, Maybe with more Peltiers and a simple 7805 with a small heatsink to keep the voltage at a stable 5v. Also doesnt the Peltier need a heatsink (i know they work with temp. dif. and ofcourse the fire will always be hotter than the ambient temp. but the peltier has a max. temperature before they start unsoldering the internal components so a small heatsink will probably help with that)

I would add some boost/regulation circuitry before I tried attaching an unprotected energy source to my phone. With a 5V buck/boost switching regulator not only could the safety be improved but efficiency could be dramatically improved. Another consideration is that peltier units begin to degrade above 85 degrees C, while the average temperature of a campfire (according to my google-fu) is around 800, so anyone building a device like this should be mindful of where the heat in the device is flowing so that placement of the unit does not damage it.

Peltier generators are great for generating voltage directly from heat, but if you're gonna charge a phone, you really should regulate the power somehow. I would recommend a 3V to 5V emergency charger circuit instead of a normal 5V regulator just to get some flexibility of the voltages.
@OpenGL4ever
@OpenGL4ever 11 жыл бұрын
There is always an inbuilt voltage regulator in the mobile phone, but he will burn this voltage regulator because this one usually doesn't stand up against more than about 6 V. So you need a second voltage regulator before the inbuilt one if your peltier element can reach higher voltage values.

I just went and bought 4 of these peltier 68 watt generators. They are so cool, you can freeze stuff with them using the cold side when connected to power (mine use 12-15 volts and 8 amps). They do not generate much voltage though, as seen in the video. The cold side must be cold and the hot side must be hot for power generation, In this video both sides were in contact with hot metal, so its probably a hoax. These wouldn't generate 5 volts on their own which is why I have 4 to connect in series

not fake actually, but it is not explained in detail. A Peltier chip converts electricity into large temperature differences on opposite sides of the chip. Freezing or below on one side and close to boiling on the other. The reverse is also true. Applying a temperature difference to the chip you get electricity out. It is, in effect, a two way transducer.

I wonder... You know how if you charge your phone while playing on it, it heats up? What if you attach the thermal electrifier (?) up to the phone, creating a looping circuit until (like some phones) the phone stops charge to prevent overheating?

This is possible if you use a step up DC - DC to constant 5V between the cell and the end of the cable

I love your videos and learning about how common technology works, and how it can be modified. But, small sticks for burning are called "Kindling", not "Kindle", which is a device sold in your local Barns N Noble.

I love how you can take ordinary things you do everyday like "charging your cellphone" and by adding "WITH FIRE!" It becomes so much more interesting,

Is there any danger of overvoltage if the fire gets too hot, or is there something preventing the voltage from going higher than 5V?

Why did you put the red cable on the - sign and the black cable on the + sign. Does the iPhone cable have reverse polarity or does the Thermoelectric unit have reversed labeling. please explain
@Djhg2000
@Djhg2000 10 жыл бұрын
The thermoelectric (a Peltier to be precise) element doesn't really have a polarity. which way the electrons move only depends on which side is hot and which side is cold. If you reverse the sides, you also reverse the polarity. Most of the time you'll still want to stick with the instructional markings to avoid confusion though. This is why we have what's called datasheets; they tell us what the component does and how to use it. If you're going to experiment with a Peltier element, definitely make sure you get the associated datasheet before connecting it.

If you use something else to hold it down, you can probably place a cooler or something on the other side of it to charge the phone twice as fast unless it's too much electricity.

i am a bit confused because on the newer iphone cables there is not a black negative wire only red, white, and green. Any advice?

you can brake your phone using this if the voltage is not constant. For example the phone charges at 5v and if the peltier is too hot it will go over 5v and overcharge your phone.

This might just slow down the rate of disharge on your phone, nothing more. only a volt or 2 and no current capacity.

Colt 159 Those regulators are pretty meh and push the input much above 12 volts and they can break and fry your phone. This is a crappily done project. get over it.
