Thanks for your great video. While I do not have an Ecoflow I do have an iTechWorld 1300P and was seeing the slow charging from the cigarette plug. I remembered I had a Waeco 150W can inverter and decided to try it. Voila..I plug the 1300P’s power brick into the can it charged at 160W compared to 60W when direct from the cigarette plug. Keep the videos coming.

G'day Steve. Another comprehensive and informative video. My aux batt is dead, and have been asking myself if this form of aux battery is the way to go, especially considering ill have a new car within the next 12 months. My biggest concern about these all-in-one's to date has been exactly what you cover in this video. I am a bit dismayed, if not a little concerned about this method of fast charging in a vehicle for a number of reasons. Firstly, even at 800w, that's still 66amp of current you are drawing at 12v. That's a big load to carry over approx 6 meters (pos and neg combined). That's more than enough to fry your car and burn it to the ground should there be a short somewhere along the length of the cable. Secondly is the heat that is generated from that much current. The smaller the gauge wire, the more resistance, and therefore, the hotter the cable and connections will become. Again, a potential fire hazard. Thirdly, in order to overcome the potential for resistance, heat build up and voltage drop, the cable size (in my ghetto mathematical equation) would need to be a 1/0 AWG. Thats about as thick as your thumb. Now I don't know how much room is in the cable channel under the sills in an 80 series, or the holes in the firewall, but there's no chance of getting a 0gauge cable, plus conduit in my sills. And I sure as hell wouldn't have 60+amps running down the transmission tunnel. Lastly, insurance. It would seem on the surface you are setting up a 12v system, however insurance companies, being the shareholder serving businesses that they are, may not agree, and suggest that a vehicle fire may have been caused by a non certified 240v installation, therefore voiding your right to claim. I think these all-in-one power boxes have really dropped the ball in the area of 12v charging, and perhaps with a bit of market pressure, they may take 12v charging a little more seriously and not provide low power solutions as an afterthought.

@ExpeditionAustralia 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, thanks for the great feedback. The actual cable size only needs to be 6G for this application. A 6G cable can carry up to 100 AMPS for about 9 metres or 30 feet. info.waytekwire.com/battery_cable_charts You can buy a 7M long 6G cable from Supercheap Auto that's rated at 100AMPS. As for the safety I 100% agree. I'm planning to run it in some flexi conduit and haven't worked out exactly what path it will take from from to back yet. I'll make a video about it when I do it. If you have any doubts or concerns about insurance I'd recommend getting it installed by an auto sparky so you can be confident that it's done properly and that should satisfy your insurance company.

For many vehicles, the limiting factor is the capacity of the alternator. You don't want to put an excess drain on your alternator which may cause failure or premature wear. Vehicles vary widely in the capacity of their alternator. You need to insure you have sufficient excess capacity. Also you want to be careful about running high voltage AC power the length of your car. This is dangerous voltage and the vibrations of the moving vehicle can cause wear spots in insulation. Be careful and do your due diligence. Their are DC-DC converters that are not quite as fast as the example in this video using an inverter. Bluetti makes the Charger 1 which can deliver up to 560w of charger power to your power station from your alternator. Victron makes the Orion 12/24-Volt 20 amp DC-DC Converter which can deliver more than 480 watts. Neither are as fast as an inverter but if you are limited by your alternator capacity, it may not matter. It is certainly much much faster than traditional 12v charging. You have options.
@ExpeditionAustralia
@ExpeditionAustralia 10 күн бұрын
The AC doesn’t run the length of the car although some people have recommended it to reduce the need for the larger cable to the inverter. I’m working on a video using a DC charger as another option. Should be finished soon.

Another way is to charge through a Enerdrive (EN3DC30-24) 24V 30A DC2DC battery charger into the EcoFLow solar charge port. You can set this to a max 31v output to the EcoFlow, it will need to be limited to 13A. It would likely accept 15A though.I use this same DC2DC with another brand though mine has an external AC adapter box so I charge through a DC port.

Efficient... Probably get the DC to DC converter as close to the battery as possible... Isolate the system from the starter battery, and have a relay to start the process with an auto off to gracefully shut things down... Wouldn't hurt to have a smoke detector and a keen understanding of electrical fuses as well... There are a few varieties of solar port connectors, one gets you a higher charge rate capability, the other is more limited... Some folks might also find something similar to a BESTEK 300w Pure Sine Inverter handy... I live in Colorado so I use 110VAC... Should be something similar for 220 though... Should also consider the electrical load on the vehicle when charging, even at 13Amps, some charging systems will be working overtime, some not so much... Thanks

@@HerrFrankenstein What I'm refering to is a Dc2DC battery charger not just a buck or boost converter. a DC2DC charger is isolated from the main battery and those that are ignition switched don't need a relay. In Australia we have been using DC2DC chargers for years though I know its only in recent years that USA has dipped their toes in this concept.

Thanks for video Steve. I have got one of the opposition power banks and can't believe I didn't think of this. I did install a step up transformer to charge at 24 volts and I find that it's fully charged in a couple of hours. I have a VSR so that charging doesn't start until the start battery is looking healthy. I use the powerbank to run my fridge 24/7 so I don't have to do any mucking about with its power supply at motel stops etc. I have an inverter so will give that a go.

Hi Phil, the 24v step up is another good option. Before the inverter idea, I was basically trying to think of the best way to get more power into the DC port since it's capable of taking 800 watts from solar panels. Didn't think of the step up transformer idea!

@ExpeditionAustralia I plan on running the new 12/12 50a dc/dc charger from alternator to 100ah house battery. This should be charging the house battery at about 600w while driving. If I then connect the house battery directly to delta 2 using xt60i, would it also charge at maximum charge(500w) while driving? Then when I stop driving and the dc/dc stops charging the watts will drop to 12v x 15a =180w which I think would be pretty good as a constant supply of back up power. I still get high rate charge during drive time and then a lower constant supply as a kind of battery expansion. Do you think this would work?

Hi Steve, Love your work and info mate, keep it all coming :) I do think you may have an issue with only installing a 1000w inverter for the Delta Max though. The Delta Max has 'AC Pass Through', so if your charging... all AC load will be drawn from the charging inverter instead of the battery. This could easily overload the 1000w inverter by accident if you used an appliance that uses more than a 1000w. Maybe you could highlight this to your viewers somewhere, just so they know to not use while charging, or get an inverter big enough to match the Delta Max maximum output. I also hear you on the lack of efficiency using an inverter as well. DC-AC-DC can lose up to 30% efficiency as opposed to a DC-DC converter. DC-DC converter is better than a DC-DC charger in our instance here as well. Mainly because DC-DC chargers have a brain (smart) ie:- have a charge controller. Ecoflow Delta is also (smart). So we need a DC-DC converter (dumb) instead of a charger (smart), to let ecoflow control it's own charge needs. Hope this helps you and your viewers from an accidental mischief :) So glad I found your content. I'll be referring to your content many times, as I'm just starting my own journey :) Cheers

Thanks for the input. I wasn’t planning to run anything from the EcoFlow while it’s charging but it’s a good point as other people may do it. I think the worst case is that the inverter would overload and shut off then you’d be using the EcoFlows battery which would steadily drain. I’ll test it next time I get a chance.

@@ExpeditionAustralia Victron 12V to 24V Orion-Tr Smart 12/24-15A Isolated DC-DC Charger VIC-ORI122436. This is what he is talking about. This raises the voltage up to 30V by dialling it all the way up which tricks the Ecoflo into thinking its receiving input from a solar panel ( you buy a new solar plug to connect it as the one with the cigarette also goes into the solar input but is not wired up right). This will allow you to get 15A instead of 8A. 15A x 30 volts= 450W. Very respectable BUT note you are not drawing the enormous currents that you would be doing with your inverter. It is drawing 450W at 12V from the alternator which means 450 divided by 12V giving 37.5A. Much less then if you're drawing 800W at 12A which is 66amps. I guess just use bigger wires and fuse it appropiately. You can get an andersen plug to the boot, wire up the unit with the Andersen as well and also connect a trigger wire to an input which is on the unit so that it only turns on when the engine is running.

I have this setup in my Sprinter van. However I found that a 1000watt inverter is not high enough because the Delta 2 max has pass through 110V (I’m in the USA) so when I turn on something over 1000watts, the Delta 2 Max it draws this from the 1000watt inverter and not from the internal batteries, so the inverter overloads. You need a 2000watt inverter to be able to use the Delta Max like normal while charging off the car alternator although you’ll need to make sure the alternator can produce enough current to support it. My van has a 220 Amp alternator so I should be fine at up to 2000watts.

If you are not leaving the truck then 1 or 2 100ah lifo4 batts and a 2k/watt inverter takes less room and allows you to add storage for about 1/3rd cost of adding another one of these units. I undersrand these for tent camping away fromnthe vehicle but only if your camping requires a lot of electronics. Really see these for apartment or tower sites. Maybe a remote building without service.

It appears to only have a single input ?? I will watch your latest video on fast charging this morning. Thanks Keith. I had the same thought about the Inverter. I have a 300 watt inverter. I’ll give that a shot I will transfer one of my AGM’s from my caravan, to the Ranger. Did you instal the Piranha Isolator, What did it cost ? How difficult was it ? Thanks Keith
@ExpeditionAustralia
@ExpeditionAustralia 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Keith, no you can't actually charge from solar and cigarette lighter outlet at the same time. This was just an idea I was thinking about but it turns out that the inverter is the way to do it. I do think that you can charge from solar panels AND the AC from the inverter at the same time (I'm going to test this). So if that works, you could have solar panels on your vehicle/van roof feeding into the 12v port in the Delta MAX while also feeding in to the AC port from the inverter. Let me know how you go with the 300 watt inverter. The Piranha isolator was actually a sponsored item when we were gearing up for The Big Lap trip. So not sure what it cost to buy/install. It's been 100% reliable though in over 240,000 km of driving so happy to recommend.

That's what's great about the variable input on the Delta Max - you can dial it down to whatever level your vehicle can comfortably handle. Eg. 500 watts which will only draw about 42 amps (500 watts / 12 volts = 42 amps). But you're still getting nearly 5x more than what your cigarette lighter socket can deliver.

the way i hooked it up is starterbattery - voltage sensitive relay - inverter - ecoflow. Reason for this is that the ecoflow is my secondary battery. And now whenever i switch the car on. Relay will close when the alternator hits 13.4v start charging ecoflow via inverter. When i turn the engine off. The relay senses the coltage drop. Switches off power to the inverter. Ecoflow stops charging and then switches over automatically to the permanently mounted solar panel on the roof. So theres almost always a form of chrging. On the unit you can select to switch to vehicle mode from tank mode and it will prevent the yeti unit from taking all of the house battery juice so you can always start your vehicle. Or limit the charging power in the EcoFlow so you don't overload the inverter.

Using the EcoFlow while it is charging from the inverter won't make any difference to what the demand on the inverter is. You dial in the power you want the Ecoflow to draw from the inverter between 100 and 2000 watts and it will remain fairly steady regardless of what else the EcoFlow is doing.

So if my understanding is correct, it will charge about 4x faster than the cigarette lighter (aprox 100 watts) which might just be fine. However, I called EcoFlow yesterday and asked what was the minimum rated wattage I could use for an inverter (like you bought) and she said it must produce at least 600 watts. Hi, I'm thinking about mounting my 2500 watt inverter in the trunk of my car for emergency purposes, specifically to charge my Ecoflow. I have a 170 amp alternator, which isn't enough to keep up with 2500 watts, but what if my load is only the 1000 watts that I'm using to recharge the Ecoflow. And also, if I had a 700 watt output load on the Ecoflow while charging it, does the car actually handle the input and output load while the Ecoflow is plugged into AC power?
@ExpeditionAustralia
@ExpeditionAustralia Жыл бұрын
The EcoFlow can be charging via the AC from the inverter and running things at the same time and you can adjust the amount of power the Ecoflow pulls from the inverter/alternator between 100 and 2000 watts so you can find the sweet spot for your setup. I confess to being somewhat of a novice here, but it seems to be defeating the purpose of having the EcoFlow Delta Max Lithium battery, then having to have a second car battery to charge the Delta Max. So maybe its a good option for those who already have a second car battery and not so good for those, like me with 2 x 100AH caravan batteries, but no 2nd car battery. I'm probably just better off considering an upgrade to the caravan battery system to Lithium, though that adds even more cost for a new battery management system and possibly other components as well. Anyway, thanks for the reviews.

@ExpeditionAustralia 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill, yep everyone’s situation is different. If I didn’t have a second battery already I would just run the inverter off the main battery and only use it when the engine is running. If you already have the lithium batteries in place then a battery management system might be what you need.

@@ExpeditionAustralia Hi Steve, Thanks for the reply. I only have AGM batteries and a BMS that doesnt support a lithium profile, so it would be a big upgrade for me. I like the portability of the EcoFlow battery, just not the cost. I will rethink. Cheers.

@@ExpeditionAustralia I have a single starter battery in my van, which is connected to an invertor which charges my ecoflow river 600. One consideration for single battery + invertor is an isolator switch for the invertor. My invertor draws a small amount of power (even when turned off) so the switch prevents the possibility of the starting going flat Excellent video, wish I found it before I did my own install

I don’t think you can adjust the inverter output. You can adjust the amount of power the EcoFlow Delta Max draws from the inverter.

The 10x refers to 10x faster than the 12v charging option from the cigarette lighter socket which is only about 100 watts. You can actually charge at around 2000 watts through the AC port so I'm only really utilising about half of that capacity.

Ecoflow should wake up. Crazy to use an inverter to charge a system which has its own inverter already. It would be a mean system if you can connect it up with the alternator via DC to DC charge controller.
@nbookie

Assume it does have a DC to DC unit, it's just little to prevent popping the fuse on the lighter socket. Not sure how it's going to keep up with the 12 volt, 100amp alternator. That alternator is sized for 30% buffer over the oem engine need. This thing would hit it for an extra 75% load over the trucks needs. Intermittent power draw like for an amplified cb or car audio is fine but 1 or 2 hours of draw will cook the alternator fast!

The car engine is what charges a battery, DC to DC comes from the car battery, inverter is like pass through charging through your battery, since you only use the inverter when the car is running. So yes, inverter makes perfect sense. You can’t fool a DC port to behave like an Ac. As long as you’re using a pure sine wave inverter, which I don’t think was clarified in this video

Don't want to sound like a smart arse but do you understand what sort of load you putting on your aux battery ? Lead Deep cycle batteries really don't like when you pulling 60-80 amp at 12-14v and your alternator won't appreciate it either... and I am not even talking what sort of dc cable you will need to maintain loads like that... what you need to look is at victron dc-dc 12 volt to 30 volt dc charger I think it can pull 15 amps ... give or take 400 ish watts ... and you don't have to worry about ac electricity operating in moving vehicle ... stay safe and don't electricute yourself or burn the car down with current plan...
