A nice conversation when drive testing the outlander phev. You forgot a very important component. The vehicle has a generator coupled to the engine to provide electric power to the driving motors & charge the batteries. Even when you don't charge it at home, the engine will charge the batteries through the generator. This vehicle cannot drive on engine mechanical power alone. It's built to provide more of the EV experience.

Hybrid/ electric vehicles will empower us economically once we know how to live with them. Petrol has become damn expensive and we have to import it from thousands of miles away and comprise 70% of value of imports into this country. Electricity on the other hand is being produced locally mainly with natural resources ie water and steam

ECVTs/power split gear or any other hybrid gearbox name use mostly one principle of operation, 1. Planetary gear, 2 counter gear ,3 final drive(differential). A very simple and reliable gearbox. The engine output is connected via a coupler to the planet carrier shaft(thus rotational planet gears), Motor generator 1/generator/MGR 1 output is connected to the sun gear, once both the engine and the motor are rotating,due to the difference in motor speed(18,000RPM max) and engine speed (4000-7000rpm),the ring gear will rotate at a speed determined by the gear ratio of sun and planet gears and also the speed of the motor and IC engine.MGR2/motor generator 2/ traction motor is only required to move the vehicle up to about 40-50km/h,once the onboard computer detects speeds above 40-50km/h, it switches on MGR 1 which almost instantly starts the IC engine and switches off MGR 2. Gear shifts will be determined by the computer wich sends variable frequency power to MGR1 so that it rotates slower, faster or even in reverse speed compared to the IC engine, According to the rules of planet gears infinite gear ratios can be acuired through this process.

Sometimes wokabi don't agree with what you say , if battery fails the car will work as a 2wd with no problem, also remember in kenya there is a Mitsubishi dealership where you can take it if it has a problem, so technical support iko kwa wingi , if battery fails go to Mitsubishi dealership, if gearbox fails go to Mitsubishi dealership, pesa umesave from fuel tumia kwa repairs
