So was the peak of Constantinople 540 or 610AD?

@@Maiorianus_Sebastian In your previous videos, you demonstrated that the fall of Rome was not an abrupt event, but rather a gradual process. The institutional and economic systems were left largely intact initially. I now have a question about when and how the entire institutional and financial system in the former territories of the empire, which were governed by various Germanic kings, ultimately deteriorated and entered the state of the Dark Ages. Why were the barbarian kings incapable of sustaining that system?

This is something I've wanted to ask a Roman expert like you and this video is well-timed. My question being that after Justinian I & the Justinian Dynasty, were the use of Chariot races in Constantinople still being done in the Roman Empire up to the Mediaeval Era (like during the Komnenian Dynasty's reign when Constantinople was still a well-to-do city before 1204)?
@justinian-the-great
@justinian-the-great 4 ай бұрын
Yes, indeed they were held pretty regularly rightly up to the late 11th century and then sporadically until the late 12th century, maybe even up to 1204. It's interesting that Hippodrome would, since the 12th century and during the last centuries of Eastern Rome, also be used as a stadium for western type medieval tournaments. Manuel II for example really liked to compete at them.

@justinian-the-great True, as Emperor Manuel II was well-known for his 'Pro-Western' policies, such as making deals with the Hungarians and marrying a Western wife.

If the Ottoman Empire decided to construct its own hippodrome in Constantinople and revive the chariot races with some new regulations, will this bring revenue to the Empire in a way in the 19th century? Just imagine how many peoples all over Europe will come to see this revived old game that has been long gone since the Sack of Constantinople in 1204. It must be quite something!
@LordWyatt
@LordWyatt 6 ай бұрын
I could see the potential, but due to culture differences between Europeans and Ottoman Turks, and the Ottomans likely keeping out lower classes to make room for the elite (for themselves and foreign visitors) I doubt they would make very much no matter when they built it. Hostilities would grow before/during/after WW1 and the new hippodrome would fall into ruin before being remodeled by the new Turkish government (probably to house the Olympics when they’d next host it). It would become a historical monument to be sure

It seems Sebastian diminishes the role of Narses. It would be interesting to see a video about the relationship between Narses and Belisarius during that period.

Much the same as you'd still have seen in Rome at that time (if more grand) .. soon to be all but wiped out in the remains/ ruins of Justinian's Reconquest efforts (not by tatty-haired wild eyed inflammatory Christian barbarians governing in Ravenna and Milan, etc). True the massacre of animals and criminals, and the more refined pantomimes, in ritual sacrifice to the local 'lords' - or 'gods' - was more or less a thing of the past (the animal torture and human jousting tournaments limping along into the AD 600s, as theatre spectaculars not just a circus act). The hyper-enthusiasms of a largely under-employed populace, rich and poor alike, in their love of good riot - and rioting - had also faded somewhat in the West .. but papal elections and unpopular episcopal decrees could still bring the 'Roman' out, violently so, as in the merry (bloodthirsty) days of yore! Yey! History can be fun .. ;o)
