"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

When Kanye made that statement about Jewish people, he listed all the Jewish people he is in business with, the Jewish people who work with him, his Jewish doctor, Jewish nurse, etc. The whole time, I kept thinking about the fact that he chose to be associated with all those people. He can easily choose a black doctor, a black nurse, a white assistant, a Mexican partner, etc., and any one of them could have done the same thing. He has the money to hire who he wants and go into business with who he wants, so if he’s getting screwed, it’s because he has chosen shady people to associate with. This is all on him. Just to be clear, he could have chose some other associate that happened to be Jewish and not gotten screwed. I’m trying to say that his problem is that he isn’t vetting his associates or his contracts. He is not a good judge of character or these people are just his scapegoats.

I'm bipolar, and it's my understanding that the longer a person with bipolar disorder goes untreated, the more brain damage they get. It's not easy to find the right combination of medications, but when you do, life gets so much better!!! It's also my understanding that if you aren't treated by the time you turn 35, the harder it is to treat. I've been in treatment for 25 years, and for the first time in my life, I'm happy and in control of my moods and actions.

My uncle had bipolar disorder and this is very reminiscent of the same behavior (with the exception of the antisemitism). My uncle went off his meds and was convinced he was invincible. Unfortunately that didn't end well and he's no longer with us. Mental illness is so unfortunate. I don't necessarily care for West's music, but I wouldn't be glad if he died either. I really hope he gets help.

KZbin is being dumb and not letting me see all of the comments on this, but I'll do my best to respond to the questions. Hopefully you all get notified as well. Don't get it twisted, I'm not saying that he is only antisemitic because of his mania - he likely has had those views long before. If anything, I'd say that the mania has exasperated his beliefs and behavior. Things can be similar while still being vastly different. I watched the entire interview that he did with Lex, and it was like watching my uncle. This is just my perspective of the present situation. While I don't feel particularly bad or sympathize for uber rich people, I would like to think that it's still humane to empathize with peoples situations regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds. And like Kyle said, a lot of the time people don't want to take their medication - that can be part of mental illness as well. I've spent over 10 years of my life advocating for mental health awareness and stigma reduction, I really don't care who is affected because much like cancer it doesn't really discriminate. My uncle ended up killing himself by stepping in front of an oncoming train, our family really hasn't been the same since. As much as people say that's a selfish thing to do, those people are also the same people that don't have struggles with mental illnesses of their own. That was almost 20 years ago. Though, I will say that this has sort of pushed me towards the position of having voluntary euthanasia be on the table for people that want it, obviously this shouldn't be the first option and people should start with medication and counseling, but that doesn't always work. And it seems like a much more peaceful way to go than other alternatives. A lot of people do manage and can go on to live productive lives. Others not so much. Nearly a fifth of people with bipolar disorder end up killing themselves. People who are going to kill themselves regardless, why not let them die with dignity. Anyways, I'm kind of rambling at this point.

This is how bipolar works: people have manic episodes, they lose all inhibitions and end up doing impulsive things that increase a variety of risks to them including risk of misadventure, risk to their reputation etc. mania eventually burns out and a depressive episode follows. depressive episodes are generally worsened by the consequences of the actions the patient did during the manic episode. bipolar depression is extreme. people often need to be on suicide watch and suicide risk is high. where will candace owens be when kanye is on suicide watch and not washing himself. she won't be there. his jewish psychiatrist will be helping him.

I had an amazing friend who was unfortunately suffering tremendously from the lows of bipolar but he hid it and hid it well. He was a brother to so many and had people who’d take a bullet for him but ultimately he departed this world alone and by his own hand. He drove like 2 hours into the middle of the forest at his favorite camping spot (trinity alps in Northern California ) and put one through his head. It was crushing! After he passed we found a few diary’s over his. It was heartbreaking but very enlightening. RIP J. What makes more sense is for Kim to do what is right for her. If Kanye refuses and denies treatment, does this mean that it would be better for her to remain married to him? You have to draw the line somewhere. If he won't stop harming his wife and being a threat or risk to his children, she is within every right to want to be removed from that situation and that man. We can't determine what makes more sense for a specific person when it is their own decision what degree of risk they will expose themselves to. I understand that you mean it makes more sense because that way maybe Kanye would be more likely to receive treatment, but it's not only about him. There are plenty of political grifters absolutely taking advantage of his mental condition right now too - there's a lot that would make more sense here, and I don't think a woman staying in an abusive relationship would have necessarily made things better in the long run.

@@jeffc1753 I don't think it's a matter of trusting Kanye, it's a matter of Kanye finding someone who he can trust to calibrate his senses on the world. It's like an old war novel I read where one of the characters has a mental breakdown from ptsd and loses his grip on reality. Well, he finds a very good friend he can trust who helps him recover, because every time he feels himself losing his grip on reality he asks him "is this real?", and then the other responds. I'm not doing it justice, but this is definitely what Kanye needs. Still though, crazy or not, the underlying issue could be that Kanye is just an asshole, and assholes tend to end up lonely and depressed. My ex husband has BD and seeing Kanye fall apart at the seams is disheartening. When he verbally attacks Kim and her mothering I KNOW what that feels like, I’ve been there. It is hell living with someone who refuses to take meds for BD. It’s a constant emotional roller coaster! It drains every bit of happiness in you because you’re always waiting for the other shoe to drop. You can never move forward as a person or a couple because when they’re in the manic stage at least in my case, my ex was super nice friendly, helpful ect and then just when I’d get used to him being that way he’d slip into a really deep depression. He wouldn’t talk to anyone, he was mean and nasty to me and our kids. I put up to it for 8 yrs until I couldn’t anymore. I know what Kim went through and how difficult it is to make the decision to divorce because you know it’s not their fault it’s the mental illness but at the same time you want to live your life and be happy and in peace. 💔😢 I really hope Kanye gets the right treatment and meds.

BiPolar and medicated too. I still go through episodes, and there are a huge number of treatments. In a group session, we laughed about how many treatments I had tried - every remedy the nurse had named, I had done. I'm mid-fifties and have been seeking help since my early thirties. I learned when it was doing something it shouldn't. I learned to tell when it wasn't working - and it was during those times I learned what most people are doing. When I performed without a net however is also when I learned not to fall. It's not a magic cure it's a regimen that gives you your life back. So Kyle just doing the fix isn't a fix at all. Everything he is doing is part of the illness. Something similar will happen again once he tries a different treatment, and the next, and the next. It's iterative.

I have compassion and empathy for Ye….but not very much. He has an infinite amount of support and resources. I’ve lately been thinking about fame and mental illness. I’m not at all convinced that fame and power cause these things. People like Kanye who are already narcissistic and self aggrandizing (as well as creative) tend to gravitate toward that kind of fame. There is a multitude of artists and entertainers that don’t end up like this, so I while the industry is tough, it’s hardly to blame. A family member has it and is usually on the upswing in manic mode, gave away all his money to a homeless man, bought a truck he couldn't afford, went bankrupt, ended up with a DUI and in a mental hospital. This has been such an amusing spectacle for me. This current episode with Kanye which proves that the majority of the modern mainstream Right are little more than hypocrites, cowards, and bullies who LOVE to take shots at soft targets but lose their testicles whenever the issue involves THOSE people or THAT country in the Middle East. I was first made aware of this in the early 90s when I started reading books by the late great Michael Collons Piper. And this was further brought home in the 90s to early 2000s by the Presidential runs of Pat Buchanan and Ron Paul and the rift between William F Buckley and Joseph Sobran after Buckley knifed Sobran in the back because Sobran dared to talk about THOSE people. It seems to me that the REAL question is why aren't Kanye's Right wing friends standing up and defending him? Tucker Carlson hasn't said a peep about this. Candace Owens finally addressed it on her podcast but she was attempting to walk the fence. She went on a brief rant yesterday about how she was being 'pressured'(and we all know who's doing the pressuring). If she condemns Kanye after years of ranting about 'political correctness run amok' and how 'cancel culture is ruining America' it will prove that she's a puppet and a coward who pretends to be a 'free thinker' but at the end of the day will do as she's told. If she doesn't condemn him, then she'll probably be the next contestant on that summer jam screen.

folks should really be careful listening to Kyle give assessments on anyones mental health and go make sure y'all get real help. Speaking in absolutes of bipolar disorders without training is dangerous and irresponsible.

Just curious, who signs Charlemagne checks at his radio station he works for? 😆

It’s not a good idea for Charlemagne to say he looks like he’s not going to be around much longer. You don’t say sh*t like that to someone with a paranoia complex. He’s going to think Charlemagne wants to kill him.

Both of these things are relevant topics though. Don't pretend Trump isn't a prominent figure and Ye's belief something a lot of ppl don't believe.

I think about what happened to Britney Spears with the umbrella and all of her shit that happened. Never heard HER say any antisemitic stuff, ever. And she really had no one in her corner until years later.
