I think the reason UK artists struggle in the US but Americans do so well in the UK is maybe because in the UK were exposed to a lot of US pop culture from birth. A lot of TV shows and music are imported from the US and if you go to any cinema in the UK its mostly American movies that dominate the roster.

UK artists struggle here because two corporations control our airwaves. Then a few corporations control what music really gets provided to those radio stations. We never hear UK artists. I can name 50 grime tunes that would be chart toppers and Grammy winners if they just were played for Americans to hear

I think it's more down to the fact that for such a small country we have so many different accents comfortably more than America I would bet and it throws them of because in America they only really know of two accents and that's a well spoken Accent such as Chelsea or cockney and that's it so I think it's more that the variation and the different pronunciation based on our accents just throws them of balance

It's all about Flow. US rappers naturally have a 'swing' to their accent. We talk very differently and have to try a bit harder to find a smoother flow. Especially if you want to be a hip-hop MC rather than a Grime MC.

Charlemagne actually talking sense, you could tell it took him a secound to wrap his head around Kano's flow but it will take the right production it needs to be different enough so that Americans don't thinks it's corny (which I feel a lot of them do). But similar enough that they can relate. I think if uk hip hop and grime ever did catch on in the US it would have to start off at a grass roots level with live shows and raves. I think once people felt the energy which is different to a lot of US rappers it would gather a following. If it comes pre packaged I think a lot of people will just turn there nose up.

I think the real issue is the jafakin in a lot of emcees flows especially London emcees, I’m British btw, but I find U.K. emcees outside London sound more authentic, they generally don’t use a jafakin accent and the Americans appreciate it more especially when the flow is slow traditional emceeing

@SmokeNationTV
@SmokeNationTV 8 жыл бұрын
If someone says they aint feeling another rapper/mc then show the people that. Regardless of whos saying it, its one persons opinion. You cant just edit it and pretend it wasn't said... Thats deceiving the public and fans who watch this stuff. If he said he was terrible im sure enough people would defend it. Weather your a fan of bugzy or not hes got a strong enough fan base to take something like that. They probably thought it would damage his US credibility with it being charlemagne mabe i dont know, But thats the industry there all in, respect a mans honesty for saying it how he feels. Like alot of people are saying in the comments we shouldn't let Americans opinions dictate OUR culture anyway. This is england bro we should make music to connect to english listeners more anyway. they will never grasp it the same way we do. Respect to sloth for trying to display the culture and talent but when you dont get the response your hoping for thats what you have to show.

A UK artist will never pop off over there nowadays. Ok you had people like Slick Rick, Monie Love and MF Doom that left the UK and had a big impact in the US music culture. That was when music was like hip hop was on the rise, but now it's established noone can be accepted. Just look at Iggy, she tried it but got shutdown quickly. Just imagine an American coming over here and being a top GRIME artist. It wouldn't happen cause of cultural differences

My take. Good points Charlemagne. I agree Productions can help. I don't think UK rappers will be as big unless the accent is changed. kind of like how Lady Leshurr does it. She is the best and most accepted from the UK. America will love her style. They already do. Jamaica will too and anywhere else that accept Hip hop.

Truth is, us Americans don’t like the accent mixed with rap. It sounds weird idk. The accent is nice but if you rap with it it seems forced
@AW-mf6oe
@AW-mf6oe 5 жыл бұрын
IZRI no, our accent, when spoken in an aggressive tone gives off this dominating vibe. I wouldn’t say it’s “forced”. It’s just a matter of being open minded and accepting that other countries that are influenced by America are gonna do their thing. Not liking ones accent is a poor excuse to reject music.. it’s immature. I get it but at the same time I think Americans need to let in and promote other cultures apart from their own. I guess it’s just a bad habit of sticking to what you’re comfortable with

I think it's gonna be hard for a UK rapper to be fully accepted in the US . A lot have tried but Hip Hop heads in the US are closed minded to appreciating people rapping in a different accent because they believe rap as a genre started from the US which is true . Once in a while they might open up and accept certain artists, just like Drake made the US ride on the Skepta wave but it won't be long before the wave settles ... They're just a little arrogant to appreciate and want to understand the UK rap scene now and will take a long time to do so.... Who knows , well see ....

I can understand the accents very clearly if not better than we do our own countrymen. I think the way it should be worded is we don’t “feel” or “relate” to the accent as well. You need to understand that the accent in US Rap is a huge factor that in how American listeners perceive a rapper. To us the African American accent is how people associate someone with a certain demographic.

I’m proud of the UK scene regardless if Americans are feeling is or not I’ll explain why. The UK music culture was influenced by Ragga toasting (Jamaica) with Jungle (1994) drum & bass (1996 - present) and UK house & garage (1997) followed by Grime (2002 - present) that is where the UK scene came from. It was never influenced by American hip hop so boy better know. Before Jungle the UK had Hardcore and Rave music (late 80s - 1993) pioneered and created in the UK with that uptempo break beat sound then progressed to Jungle adding reggae style bass lines, ragga vocals and removing of piano riffs. The God fathers and pioneers of dance music The Prodigy (1990 - present) were also a massive influence and a big part of UK music culture. So before the Mcing or chatting on a mic - not rapping we already had own UK 🇬🇧 music scene

@enosger 2 жыл бұрын
I think you need to watch some grime history documentaries, the pioneers contradict you, dizzie says he was into south rap specifically 3 6 mafia, Wiley say the same and the so solid guys, even Jon e cash says he wanted to make hip hop with the American attitude but with a U.K. twist.
