The mental image of these men trying to have a serious discussion about French literature while Bukowski is sitting in the corner gargling wine is hilarious.

Yeah 3 bottles in quick succession as a fan of Hank i would say he knew what he was doing wanted to get uncontrollably drunk so that even he couldn't predict what he'd do. Hearing him talk about how it annoyed him how false this media world was. Back to alcohol is say the average long term functioning alcoholic drinks to the equivalent of wine ,2-3+ bottles a night, the average depressed or anxious addict might guzzle 5-9 bottles a everyday until they become ill and either quit, make massive life changes, get help, or die. Edit I don't know why did this stupid comment just to say it's not a competition as genuine people say we're all the same when we can't control. To clarify not many people drink as bukowski did and last longer than few years, although I believe he did have periods of long time off and especially with Linda, wife. He was into transcendental meditation.

When I was a teenager, I worked at a bookstore in the evenings. There were two intellectually charge guys that worked together in the cafe. One of them despised Bukowski while the other one practically worshipped him. They used to get in the most intense arguments over it -pretty much every other night until finally the one threw a copy of ‘Post Office’ at the other and yelled “read it ya dumb Fk” and proceeded to take off his lanyard and quit

They expected that behavior. They were likely counting on it to increase the show's viewership - and we're watching it four decades later. Bukowski was far more intelligent than some give him credit for. I think he intentionally drank three bottles of wine to use the show to increase his book sales. In the long run, though, none of it matters. I read a minimum of one Bukowski poem a day, regardless. ❤
