A special day dedicated to one of the most charismatic animals for its beauty and graceful walking. However, many penguin species are endangered due to climate change and other threats.
The Galapagos penguin, besides being charismatic and beautiful, is a keystone species, that is, it helps us understand what is happening to it, its habitat and other species that share its ecosystem. It is the only species that lives and breeds in the tropics, with a population of 1,940 individuals by 2020. These positive results were obtained in the population census of the same year, a record since 2006.
The Charles Darwin Foundation together with the Galapagos National Park Directorate is working on monitoring the population status of this species to ensure its long-term permanence in the islands, and our scientist Gustavo Jiménez-Uzcátegui is leading this project.
