Griff Rhys-Jones would make a good job of Scrooge. In the first part he says that the Ghosts of Christmas show Scrooge the meaning of Christmas whereas they really teach Scrooge about himself, what he had been and what he had become. Christmas is the backdrop to the story.

The 1951 movie version of "A Christmas Carol," called "Scrooge" in the U.S., stars Alastair Sim and was directed by British Director Brian Desmond Hurst. It is an absolute marvel. In this movie, the Ghost of Christmas Present does in fact reveal the two children that he protects--Ignorance and Want. (One of the commenters had said they had never seen this passage of the book presented in any of the movie versions.) Also, as I heard in another historical account, Dickens father was at one point sent to a Debtors' prison and Dickens, as a teenager (14-16?), was forced to work in a workhouse that produced shoe polish to help work off his father's debt. Even after his father was finally released, Dickens' mother would not let Charles stop working in the workhouse for another 2 years, for which he did not forgive her. So Dickens had first-hand experience with poverty, family indebtedness, poverty, and being forced into under-age labor for years in a workhouse.

I watch every version of A Christmas Carol movie. I enjoy “Scrooge”, made in 1951 starring Alistair Sim. Of course reading an illustrated A Christmas Carol adds to the fun!!

Excellent upload, A Christmas Carol is my favourite book, and the musical version with Albert Finney the closest to it I have ever seen. Nothing can touch it and Finney's Scrooge is how I imagine Charles Dicken's intended.

It's interesting that the 2 kids representing ignorance and poverty are left out of most of the modern presentations of A Christmas Carol that I've ever seen. I only found out about them very recently. (I must admit, I haven't yet read the original book.) I wonder why that is? Thank you for an amazing post! 😊

Discussing Bob Crachett in a Harrods store, how ironic
@heathercontois45017 ай бұрын
I like that discussion with Patrick Stewart about the lines Bob has regarding dinner. But, think about it. That was probably the most meat they had all year, and it was cooked so well that everyone had some and there was some left over. I've cooked a goose (never again!) and it is not an easy thing to keep it all evenly cooked.
@MrKmoconne5 жыл бұрын
Because we have turkey on Thanksgiving day, it seems to be an unwritten rule that we can't have it for Christmas. It's usually ham. I have never had goose, so I'm curious about how good goose is? Sadly, Dicken's warning about ignorance and want has not been heeded in our modern age.
@Markstewart205 жыл бұрын
there is not much meat on a goose so get a large one!
@MrKmoconne5 жыл бұрын
@@Markstewart20 Thanks. I think if I did some work, I could find some place that sells goose. What I worry about is if it would be a bit of let down? I mean there is probably a good reason goose fell out of favor to turkey. (maybe it just doesn't have a pleasant taste?)

@@MrKmoconne Hello John, I've had goose for Christmas and I think it's far tastier than turkey. There's not much meat on it though so get 2!

It's very difficult for us to be storybook angels, even Dickens. I think he would still implore you to try. We WISH you a merry Christmas even though it might not be as merry as we would like because, well, life gets in the way sometimes in ways we can't control.

Sadly Dickens didn’t have the vision to see what Christmas has become. Months of commercial hype, stress, anxiety, overspending, overeating, competitive gift giving, competitive decorating and lighting, and enforced jollity. Oh to go back to the days of that edition of the Times before A Christmas Carol was published. Bah, humbug.
