Ironically in her younger days she was praised and adored for being more human and approachable and esp for her "walk -a-bouts" shaking hands with the public. It shows how detached the previous royals are. Her parents were praised for actually walking (not touching where possible) out in public. The royals before this were lucky to be seen in public at all and then usually in a carriage.

I've read a lot of contemporay accounts about this period, and it's important to talk about his childhood in more detail. Please bear with the length, it is not easy to pare this down as much as I have. The way his mother was bit by bit more and more isolated despite agreeing to raise the kids as protestants. That his father was in an impossible position when it came to picking a wife is also important. He had to pick a protestant, but they insisted that this marriage also must be advantageous politically. The woman they wanted didn't exist. There were TWO protestant countries. The other did not have any available princesses. So he asked about marrying someone lower, and parliament went ballistic. In the end he went with a catholic princess under the agreement to raise the children protestant. But while initially parliament was okay with it, they noticed that the mother had french speaking maids. They became convinced that these maids were going to corrupt the little children. So her entire retinue was sent packing. At that point she was still around her children, but parliament was still freaked out, and started separating them from their mother. Then their father the King got kinda pissed off, and started trying to take some control back because he could barely see his own sons. Then some parliamentarians tried to murder him, so he had them executed. He tried to wrest control again, and died for it. Meanwhile his wife managed to smuggle her children out after much effort. This background is crucial to understanding Charles II's attitude towards religion, marriage, and government. Because his home life was a train wreck, he had no strong desire for legitimate children, despite the attempts. He certainly wasn't going to push for a second wife or adopt a child. Because religion was the reason he spent his childhood in turmoil, he was for religious tolerance. That's why he tried to pass indulgences. As for government, he stayed limited in what he did, because he was terrified of pushing things too far and having to go "traveling" again. He often didn't push as hard as he should have. He spent most of his early reign on next to nothing. When he finally got money, he spent everything. Of course, having such a chaotic childhood didn't exactly encourage great spending habits. Basically, parliament messed up. I hardly pity those who were hung drawn and quartered. They caused entirely unnecessary problems and many deaths. Then they acted like despots before freaking out and calling back a man whose entire life they had ruined thus far. The one thing I can say is that it led to more down to earth kings. Charles II and James II personally fought the great fire of london by joining bucket lines, and liberally tossing out coins from his own income to anyone who looked like they were losing morale. That's actually why I started researching him. I wondered what king would risk their life fighting a fire like that. Sorry this was so long, I was just surprised that this information was missed by biographics.
@catherinemiller211811 ай бұрын
My favorite depiction of Charles II is still from an episode of an obscure low-budget TV show called Young Blades. Historical accuracy is mostly abandoned, to the point that an disguised Charles is wooing a fugitive french pesant women while he slums around Paris waiting for a chance to personally assassinate Oliver Cromwell. It's historical fanfiction, but it is a fun romp of a watch.

You know who the Merry Monarch is descended from? Not only is he descended from William the Conqueror, Edward Longshanks, Edward III, Edward IV, or even Mary, Queen of Scots, but he is also descended from Charles VI of France, who was known as “The Mad”.

I have a Charles II "royalist" mug. It is made of cast pewter, with a hinged thumb-operated lid. The underside of the lid has a cast high-relief bust of Charles. In use, one could sit in a public house and consume beverages without lifting the lid enough for anyone to see the underside. If it appeared that there were like-minded (royalists, as opposed to roundheads), a quick flip of the thumb could discreetly reveal the owner's political leanings to selected individuals within the public house.

At the event of meeting the queen in scotland I have to be fair to the tourists concerned. On her own time the queen liked to dress down for comfort. She would probably have been wearing wellie's ( gumboots for the rain and mud) a woollen skirt and an anorak (hooded raincoat). She wouldn't have seemed very regal other than her voice. 💜

I’d love to see a return of the original format of the Biographics Podcast. For the first ten or so of them it was just Simon having a very chilled chat about once a month on a person covered in a Biographics video for about forty minutes.
