When Charles Moore first became a journalist in 1979, Britain was at a crossroads. There were fears the country was facing a perpetual crisis with soaring unemployment, inflation, and social unrest. Britain was bitterly divided. Meanwhile, Moore quickly rose through the ranks of fleet street, becoming the editor of The Spectator in 1984, and later the editor of the Sunday Telegraph and the Daily Telegraph. Now Lord Moore is a regular columnist in the publications he edited and Britain, arguably, is just as divided as when he started his career. The Telegraph’s Steven Edginton interviews Lord Moore for Off Script. In this episode, Lord Moore discusses the penetration of British institutions, climate change and the rise of China.

Whatever description was ascribed to the social values of Britain during the 1950's and 60's, all I can say is, "let's get them back"; asap. Britain has become a pitiful sham compared to the country in which I was brought up! EVERYTHING was one thousand percent better years ago than what it is today. No WOKE, transgenderism, political correctness, social media influencers, overpaid wannabes or audio attacks posing as 'music'. What the hell has happened and why have we allowed it?

@@graememorrison333 If we'd nipped these obnoxious trends in the bud we'd have felt no shame from 'social media butterflies' who now seem intent on wrapping the realities of life in cotton-wool. The horrors of war acted, in times past, as a reality check, reminding people that life can be cruel, capricious and completely class and gender neutral when it came to victimisation. It has now been over 76 years since WW2 ended and society in general has grown soft, allowing dreamers to pepper the political and social landscapes; all to our detriment. Regards.

The same reason the ideologues condemn Britain and the US particularly for the history of slavery. I find that people that don’t understand science, mistrust it and ridicule it. Journalists generally sound smart at talking and only select easily understood facts by their readership to prove any point they are making. Most of the ones I ever heard giving interviews generally are only of average intelligence. Remember newspapers have to make money, telling the truth is not a primary consideration. I don’t think I’ve read a newspaper since I left home 40 years ago, better to read a book with references in.

I must admit 'wokeism' doesn't seem to be as talked about in France (where I live) as it is in the US or the UK. When I discovered this 'ism' I first thought isn't this the modern-day equivalent of 'Enlightenment'? Didn't we all 'woke' in the 17th and 18th centuries? No, not sufficiently. I don't adhere to any specific wing of politics and am non-religious but do adhere to my own reasoning and believe I know how to differentiate between what's wrong and right. To be nonracial seems evident to me. The BLM movement, to my thinking, is a tautology, or should be. Isn't it evident that ALM (All Lives Matter)? It's a sad state of affairs to get to this point in social ideology, centuries after the era of Enlightenment. Does it mean that, as a human race, we just don't 'get it' ? We haven't learned much? I suppose it does, yes, and there are too many more or less contemporary examples of why we are still at this point and how we got here. A French student, Pierre Valentin, writes that wokeism is 'an opium of intellectuals'. We need to teach philosophy in schools, open up the arena for debate, encourage reasoning and stop the tendancy for blind adherence to groups, political parties and 'isms'.

@@ajs41 funny that I see flat earthers, anti-vaxxers and right wing political conspiracy theorists use this moniker 'woke', 'they are woke' just as much as those on the left and they both seem to share the same dogmatic approach to their belief systems. This isn't exclusive to one particular ideology and is used by both sides of the argument to denigrate the other. It's a complete oxymoron regardless of persuasion or opinion. The sooner we all come to the realisation there is no right or wrong and this is all paradoxical, the sooner we can move on together.
