So I’m a cast member at Walt Disney world and I spend a lot of time at EPCOT (it might be my favorite park), and they’ve always played a great combo of optimistic modern soundtracks and all kinds of world music, but recently they’ve really been into the more obscure instruments and sounds that we’re not as accustomed to in western culture. The sound of the erhu immediately makes me think of the pre-show music for harmonious (the nighttime spectacular that just closed, rip). It’s such a cool sound and I can’t get enough of it!

I honestly thought it was suona when I first heard it in the trailer because I thought they were going all out with the Chinese instrument sound and then give it a smooth jazz twist. The music kinda reminds me of Sonic Unleashed and Mario Kart 8D's "dragon track" except they don't have that sax/suona. Useless fact: Kenny G's Going Home was a huge hit in China since the 1990s and has reached meme status as the song that plays everywhere and anywhere to let people know when it's time to "go home". Whether for a stage play, at a restaurant, when the mall closes, or after a sports match.

I was once playing the Ocarina of Time title music while my piano teacher was getting ready for our lesson, and she said "Oh, you're learning Gymnopédies?" - I had no idea what she meant at first, but then she showed me, and I've loved Erik Satie ever since! I particularly liked what they did with Zelda's Lullaby in Skyward Sword. Inverting the theme and turning it into an epic hero's theme was a particularly cool stroke of genius. So far, that epic sweeping sound is coming back in Tears of the Kingdom and I gotta say it's making me SUPER excited to hear more. It's already somehow topping the Breath of the Wild soundtrack.

That is why I love vgm. It can be experimental, but also connects to you, feeling the music. I can't describe it, but the main theme for Tears of the Kingdom sounds like I've known it my whole life and now it's finally in a video game, like when you watch a favorite TV show and then they make a movie and the music is bigger and better but still recognizable. I know it's a new theme and a new performance, but it's like I've known it all along. It just sounds exactly like what it's supposed to.

My favorite Zelda soundtrack is Twilight Princess. It has its momentous marches and bombastic boss battles but mixed well with calm and melancholy moments of darkness and loss. A big difference between the sadness in Breath of the Wild and Twilight Princess is that Breath of the Wild comes from a place where it is the the past. There's little one can do now. It's quiet. But with Twilight Princess, the sadness is present. To me its more cathartic, hearing songs about coping with current hardship than being reminiscent and resolved.

After rewatching this video I just realized that BOTW and TOTK’s themes literally spell out the whole game in BOTW’s you first hear the piano of link waking up and eventually you get the instruments that are associated with Kakariko and Heteno and then it finishes with the Goron mine thing and then the main melody comes back stronger than ever and then silently finishes at the beginning of TOKT’s theme you hear the same piano flourishes you hear when descending to the surface from the Great Sky island then you hear the Erhu which is associated with dragons and then the theme gets higher and higher and then stays on the highest note while the reverse sounds play and where do those sounds play At the lowest point in the game and the final boss

9:05 anyone else notice how Charlie here literally showed that the avengers theme straight up uses his “anime chord progression” with that C to D to Em. I’m not sure how to feel about it, but it’s still kinda cool and funny.

The note that you mention in the beginning of the song that doesn’t belong is really interesting. It’s highly speculated that this game will involve time travel with either link or Zelda being stuck in the past. When you mentioned the use of that note it immediately made me think why they would have done that. Almost seems like the song has themes of the story with a character being stuck where they don’t belong but still being in parallel with the others, kinda like the note!

That is exactly what I came to the comments looking for. That little piece sounds like a minor version of the song of light to me

0:16 So I am right! I watched the trailer after seeing this video's notification and went, "Is that an erhu??" I've wanted an erhu virtual library for ages, but the good ones are all rather expensive...

This is a great piece of music, especially when you realize that it incorporates the themes of the champions forum Breath of the Wild, specifically Revali's theme and Mipha's theme!

I’ve been waiting for this video lol. I love this theme and cannot wait for the game next week! Also if you want to, you should totally review the music from trailer 3 👀 I feel like you’d love the music from it! Even if you do a longer video, I know I’d love to see that as well if other people want to see it too!

This was amazing but i really want a video kinda talking about how you go about writing music like this, where do you start? Do you need a phd in music theory or is there another method?

Breath of the Wild's soundtrack started something for the series. The older games have great music, one of the most memorable in videogame history of you ask me. That's mostly to do with Koji Kondo. Breath of the Wild and onward the soundtrack feels less videogamey, because it tries to tell a story along with the world around the player. I cannot pick a favourite from any Zelda game, because they all in their own right do something amazing.

Breath of the Wild is the best Zelda soundtrack out there. It got ripped for being "minimalistic" but close listening reveals all the little intricacies and allusions to the last 2 decades of Zelda games. Really incredible compositions,

I live for videos like this: someone who wasn't big on videogames as a kid discovering how awesome videogames soundtracks are, and always has been since the beginning. I'm still hooked on that video about Sonic R. Those faces of joy were amazing!
