charleston style, proper sync

how i made this video: • how i made the "charle...
similar to the original charleston dance video dubbed with daft punk's "around the world", except al and leon are dancing in sync with the beat.
original videos from here: • Charleston -- Original...
and
• charleston style
i'm not sure what the meter is for the charleston dance.. i just assumed it's 4:4. not that i had a choice, since i was using "around the world". but i think this is the cause of a couple inconsistencies that i haven't fully figured out yet (or maybe i just can't count correctly). for example:
1. when the second guy comes out to dance, he starts on the 9th bar of the original song. so i made sure the 9th bar of "around the world" began when his dance began. but nine bars earlier in "around the world" does not correspond with nine bars earlier in the original song.. that's why the video starts out silent for a couple beats.
2. when the first guy comes back, his knees come together on the 4th beat in the original song.. but with "around the world", they come together on the first beat.
3. not all parts seem 100% synced. but watch to the end and you'll see that it is, in fact, synced overall.
figured out the timing of their dancing.. reconciled the difference between it and "around the world" by pitch shifting the song to match it, then dubbing it with the video and doing an assumefps() to a faster speed and resampling the audio afterwards.

not sure if anyone has talkjed about phrase lengths etc, but a lot if vernacular jazz has a mixture of 6 count and 8 count steps so could be that? Or if the musicians were playing a blues form song it would be 12 bar (3x8s) form so that would make the 8 bar (2x8s) form of around the world not fit. the original song may not be a standard form either :) hence the 9 bar intro.

@ddandymann
@ddandymann 4 жыл бұрын
@@terminalpsychosis8022 The issue is that because, as you said yourself, dancing was not recorded in anyway before the 20th century we can only really speculate at exactly what would have been done. Pretty much the only forms of dancing that can be reliably traced back more than 130 years are ballet and ballroom dancing.

Al Minns and Leon James were dancers in the 1930s and early 1940s with a group called Whitey's Lindy Hoppers up at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem (torn down in 1958). In the late 1950s-early 1960s, though middle-aged, they'd go on TV shows like the DuPont Hour to do the old dances and get them recorded for posterity (and to get paid, of course). Here they are on KZbin 50 years later, so mission accomplished. The different types of Charleston Al and Leon did here: the original style, the "Collegiate" Charleston, the "Scarecrow" Charleston, the (yes) "Around The World" Charleston, and the "Prestigious" Charleston.

I used to use music like this to teach people how to count music and predict changes in music. You can do a lot of ballroom style dances to almost anything. Mambo and Waltz, for instance, don't work, but you could do a west coast swing to a song like this. If you only know 4 steps, you can do the same step for 4 bars, then change to a different step after the 4th bar. Chances are, there will be a change in music and it makes it flow really nicely. Worked great for wedding dances.
