From Wikipedia:
Charleston is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of West Virginia. Located at the confluence of the Elk and Kanawha rivers, the city had a population of 51,400 at the 2010 census and an estimated population of 46,536 in 2019. The Charleston metropolitan area as a whole had an estimated 208,089 residents in 2019. Charleston is the center of government, commerce, and industry for Kanawha County, of which it is the county seat.
Early industries important to Charleston included salt and the first natural gas well. Later, coal became central to economic prosperity in the city and the surrounding area. Today, trade, utilities, government, medicine, and education play central roles in the city's economy.
The first permanent settlement, Fort Lee, was built in 1788. In 1791, Daniel Boone was a member of the Kanawha County Assembly.
Charleston is the home of the Charleston Dirty Birds of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, and the annual 15-mile (24 km) Charleston Distance Run. Yeager Airport and the University of Charleston are in the city. West Virginia State University is in the local area as well as West Virginia University and Marshall University satellite campuses.

Born and raised in Charleston and downtown died when the Town Center Mall was built. Then the mall died when off of corridor G South Ridge and Dudley Plaza were built. It’s still home and I wouldn’t live anywhere else. Glad you visited Mike. Safe travels! 🙏🏻

@sharonrivers1347 We live in the Green/White Mountains of northern New England, and I have the same complaint! In the late 1800s, businessmen came up here, cleared the land, and built beautiful grand hotels. Over the years, the touism declined, and the land grew back. So all those beautiful vista's disappeared, and now we're left with trees. Lots and lots of trees, blocking any hope of any kind of scenery! 🏞🏞🏞🤔🏞🏞🏞

@JustTheConcerts

With it being the capital, the MSA population is around 260,000. On any given day in Charleston you can have hundreds of thousands of people. However, the city population is getting smaller and smaller as people move to the suburbs or out of state. They have too many smaller towns in the area that should be annexed into Charleston to stop the population bleed. This would give them a city population of over 130,000 people.

The money that built Charleston was from heavy industry. Charleston is now in somewhat of a "post-industrial" phase and adapting better than most such cities. It's hard to find the slums like those which plague other areas, even some which are ostensibly more "prosperous". I think we need to get some of that industry back but for now there are decent jobs for anyone who wants to work and EVERYONE is hiring and raising their pay scale.

Great video Mike. Charleston, WV is such a beautiful city with great people. They have a lot to offer for a city it's size. Unfortunately, poor leadership has left the city in a bad spot economically and caused a large decrease in population and increased drug use. Once all the high paying coal and chemical jobs left, they were never able to replace those jobs. Some, because of leadership, and the rest because of the residents. When they tried to attract larger businesses for growth, the people would shoot it down because they didn't want the traffic increased, or worried about noise. Then those same people would complain there were no jobs. You can't have it both ways. They seem to be focusing on tourism now. However, they need to do more to attract higher paying jobs to the area. In order to make things better, they need to stop the decrease in population. The population in the state is much older and the younger generations are leaving. They can do this by merging Charleston with the surrounding areas. They need to consolidate South Charleston, Dupont, Cross Lanes, Kanawha City, Dunbar and other smaller towns in the area into one larger city. By doing this, you give Charleston a bump in population to over 130,000 people which will get the city much needed Federal funds and attract more businesses. This will also make the area services run better and more inline with better communication without duplication in services. Next, they need to focus on improving the school system, transportation and infrastructure. The transit system in Charleston and the surrounding areas are poor. They need to streamline this service and have more buses, longer hours and longer routes. Make sure the internet speeds in the area are high and partner with cell providers to improve 5G coverage. Next, focus on ways to keep the younger population in the area. This can be done with tax breaks, rental and housing down payment assistance. Partner with local colleges to have programs in place for college graduates to stay. Maybe even some payments towards their student loans. Next, is to attack the drug pandemic head on. Get people off the streets and into drug rehab programs and job assistance. Since their focus is on tourism, they need to improve the waterfront area and have it similar to Baltimore, MD. They could add an aquarium, shopping, boat tours, rentals and restaurants over looking the water. To keep the area safe, they would need to higher more police officers to patrol that area. This would keep people in the area longer, give the residents more to do and attract people driving the interstates to stop and spend some money in Charleston when they originally didn't plan to stop there. This is my opinion, and I'm sure there are people with better suggestions than I.

Charleston, is plagued by the opioid pandemic, too many young people on some kind of drug, they can't work because they can't pass drug tests, beautiful state terrible social life.👉😔👈

No worse here than anywhere else. Better than a lot of places. If the opioid problem was that bad you'd see homeless just hanging around. I've been in this state all of my life. I don't know why people think West Virginia has some terrible drug problem. No more no less than anywhere else.

Not one homeless person was seen in this video. In fact, not one person was on the street any where. Looks like a pretty clean city with no trash on the streets either. It looks like heaven compared to where I live along the Jersey shore in NJ. There's nothing but traffic and people everywhere. WV is so much nicer and peaceful. If you're afraid to leave your home there you could never be able live in NJ. Lots of big old beautiful homes in Charleston.

@@barrywainwright3391 the drug and homeless issue is a big problem. You wouldn't know it from the video. But it you try to walk down the street at night it's everywhere. They are all over some of the very public areas shown in this video.

Charleston is dead has been for a long time. This place is such a joke it's embarrassing. Downtown Charleston is AWESOME, if your gay, a drug addict or drug dealer. That's it. Between the fentanyl the heroin and the meth this town was over a long time ago. Every time you think it can't get any worse it's drops another 10 notches. When Walmart is shutting down stores all over the state and threatening to shut down the remainder of their stores the shit is bad. Charleston is just another Logan.
