Synopsis :- Behind That Curtain is a 1929 American Pre-Code mystery film directed by Irving Cummings, starring Warner Baxter and featuring Boris Karloff.[1] It was the first Charlie Chan film to be made at Fox Studios. It was based on the 1928 novel of the same name. Charlie Chan, who is played by Korean-American actor E. L. Park, gets one mention early in the film, then makes a few momentary appearances after 75 minutes. Producer William Fox chose this film to open the palatial Fox Theatre in San Francisco on June 28, 1929. It was a sound film.

Although this was not what we are used to enjoy as Charlie Chan movies, it is almost 100years old and a great time capsule of places, mores, clothing, transportation...really valuable for all that. How wonderful you saved this and have shared. TY.

Being filmed at the beginning of talkie movies it’s pretty obvious that the actors were used to doing silent movies or stage plays and really over emphasized the dialogue and gestures. A great film to show film students. Charlie Chan was the invisible man.

thank you for showing this silent movie with the voice overs. this movie was a testament to the strong morals of past. not everyone was a gentleman back then, but can see she feared for his life from her murdering husband. in reality it was her life she should have been fearing for. love is truly blind.

@@653j521. Thanks for your comments. Viewers often remark on some time in the past as more moral, more innocent, and/or simpler. Having lived through quite a few decades, I've seen no evidence that former times were any simpler or more innocent & certainly no easier. It was different in the 1950s, '60s, etc, but not simpler or easier.

An interesting movie in many regards. First, the location footage is amazing for its time. Second, though the acting was not what we would call great today, it was a time of transition from the silent era to that of the talkies, with which actors and directors were feeling their way, so no better or worse than might be expected. The most interesting thing to me, as a writer, is that this was apparently Earl Derr Biggars first introduction of Chan, and he was inspired by this incidental character to build a franchise on him. Fascinating.

Earl Derr Biggers wrote the screenplay and was the author of the Charlie Chan novels. While the movie was stiff and over acted, I was wondering how it would be if it was remade. Charlie Chan was in the movie a few times at the end, but not enough to put his name in the title. That was done to draw in the movie goers. It did amuse me, so I watched it to the sappy end.

Many of these Early Talkies, 1929/1930s are so littered with former Stage Actors---stiff with awaiting a Stage Director's Cues that to make them more in-line with 'modern taste' mine included....best to watch them at 1.25 x speed...much more an even viewing flow.

It is advertised as a Charlie Chan film. Do not believe it. He only makes a cameo appearance right at the end of the film. The acting is terrible, so terrible, in fact, it's almost funny. My favourite scene is Eve and John in a tent in the desert, they get up, sit down, get up again, nearly kiss about 20 times and I am not kidding. Finally, they kiss! Boris Karloff made an appearance as a short of butler; but he didn't do it! Basically, don't bother to watch it unless you are an OTT Charlie Chan fan and therefore don't care or you love watching the most monumental tat in the world!
