@frets9915 жыл бұрын
It's an 8 string with I believe 2 bass strings at the top so he's playing guitar and bass. The organ tone is being caused by the Leslie cabinet which has rotating speakers .

Ok, well you are entitled to your opinion, but there are many of us out here who like the sound of the hammond organ. I personally think his sound is innovative and hip. I live in New Orleans and he has pioneered a sound of fusion funk/jazz that is really popular around here. He has already reached his potential. You can't take Charlie Hunter and make him into what you want him to be, you have to like him for what he is. His unique guitar style is what makes him so special.

Amazing. Real fun to watch, this was like my fifth time and I'm starting to sympathize with how it must feel to be able to play like this: bass and chords/lead at the same time. I can do something similar on a Rhodes already; this type of finger coordination is really Something Else! :)

I just went to one of his performances 2 days ago at Stanford. During intermission I went to the bathroom and dropped a paper towel, he came in at the same time and said, "Ah, now ya done it!" I said, "My bad." And then he patted me on the back and said it's alright, I was so excited I almost fainted, I felt like I was touched by god.

that's the actual sound - the 8-string has two outputs, one to a bass amp, the other to a guitar amp. Charlie's idea - at least in his early stuff - was to pay homage to the great jazz/funk organists. Not surprisingly, the sound you're hearing is him playing through a Leslie cabinet :)

The sound you're hearing is the use of stereo chorus unit. It simulates (to a certain degree) an old rotating cabinet. The warbling effect is used a lot with Hammond organs. It's only natural to hear other instruments in the genre use it too. Have a listen to John Scofield's use of the chorus effect...you'll soon like it, But, just like any effect, it can be overused. Take a look at that fretboard! the frets aren't parallel to one another - they're set in diagonally. Very bizarre.

Yeah your right, i am into fusion, not really into speed metal, im really a rock musician, all the old stuff i prefer, but i really am into my jazz, country and blues, i cant get enough of it, im playing and listening to it more than rock music. Satriani is fast, but i feel being a long term fan people judge him on just being a non musical shredder, when i know for fact all his music is literally based on melody, yes he shreds aswell! pass and the rest and superb!

I was under the impression that Hunter used a H&K Rotosphere leslie simulator pedal, as opposed to actually lugging around a leslie cabinet.

I could see you referring to someone like yngwie, or MAYBE even Vai as just a "shredder", but Satch is a genius who happens to have some smokin' technical abilities. And as has been mentioned, apparently he played a roll in Hunter's development as well. If you're going to make inflammatory comments, you might as well shoot for accuracy...

No, everyone thats reads a little bit of theory will not know the modes, before even mentioning modes, youve got to know basic harmony, intervals, key signatures, scales, chords, tonalities etc. all that comes before modes buddy. Joe knows how to use them perfctly, infact i cant name a song where he dosent use them, or at least modulate, have a listen to his first released album, the entire album is filled with mind boggling theory, harmony, and amazing modulations, He is a genius.

I dont see why everyone is hating on satch, hunter and satch are 2 completely different styles. And yes Satriani did teach charlie hunter for quite sometime back in the day. And come on guys lets be honest, if it wasnt for satriani to teach charlie hunter what he knew, he never would have developed this style, just remember, No matter what we learn even if its the basics "there's always something we'll miss out" hunter learned of satriani, and all of you lot dis own Joe. Well done

Exactly, so you will end up being confident in what you do most of your playing time and weaker in techniques and chord progressions you scarcely apply. That is what divides so much, different musical habits generate skills and lack of skill depending on what you do. I agree that sweep pickin chords arpeggios might show lack of imagination :P I think in metal you have to deliver energy mostly, some techniques are used to generate concept, special effects, like waterfall of notes, AK47 XD

the guitar is a much more percussive and expressive instrument than the organ is, with the guitar you can have much more crescendos and decrescendos hich gives it much more range and feel. I'm not saying the Organ isn't funky, Jimmy Smith is one of my favorite musicians of all time, but with this fusion of Organ and Guitar, it really creates a unique aspect on both instruments. plus he doesn't use the organ sound ALL the time, it's there when he needs it. :D

Yeah man he did, dont get me wrong and all, but charlie hunter is great, joe pass is brilliant, but i wouldnt say i hate them because they're a different style or anything, there are so many guitar players out there who have something new to offer, i grew up with satriani, he changed the world for guitar players, such a distinctive, story telling player who mixes lots of styles. Whereas Charlie hunter and joe pass are so into jazz their comping and chordal melodies are brilliant!
