Amazing how Disney pushed for The lion King as live action while promotions and stop motion is still under animation.

This comment section is so dumb! They are simply saying the two films are so wildly different, that it's impossible to even compare them, never mind decide that one is "better" than the other. The entirety of "animation" competing against each other for an award is a strange idea, that's the point. I would say exactly the same about having an Oscar for "foreign language film" is just a very strange concept once your actually think about it.

This reminds of how the top comment on the trailer for Loving Vincent is "How was this in the same Oscar category as The Boss Baby?", and I laugh every time. It really is absurd to compare dramas made for adults to Pixar, Disney, etc., just because they were created with the same medium.

As a guy who constantly submits his own shorts to film festivals, I really feel for Kauffman and everybody involved. Competition on display is really unfair. Being nominated is going to get you only this far in movie business. Dennis Vilneuve probably wouldn't be where he is today if not for the Oscar given to Incendies.
@nem07637 жыл бұрын
It shouldn't have been in the category, easy. On the other hand, Inside Out is a great movie at what it does, and it is very heartening for people with mental illness to see such a great and finely made product opening the debate so constructively. I have no attachment to Anomalisa, but I do feel sick remembering that The Wind Rises was in competition with Frozen - and that Frozen won this ridiculous contest. These things are just disgusting from an artistic point of view. To me it would be like putting Austerlitz in competition for the same literary award as Coraline because both books have pictures in the text. It's as absurd of criteria to base an award on as the fact that two films are animated. Both are no doubt wonderful books, but it's insulting to both to be equated. To me categories should work like this: what is this work's intended audience, what is its artistic aim, how does it relate to established genre? There should be a best children's film in the same way there should be a best children's book. Simple. The Oscar's however are not awards that "seriously" think about art, they are awards that serve an entertainment industry, and they sometimes accidentally drag art through the muck.
@juliettedemaso75885 жыл бұрын
By lumping these two films together, for the purpose of picking which one is more deserving of an award, much is being revealed about the shallow and confused criteria The Academy uses to measure art. And Oscar is the most sophisticated body for the recognition of film excellence? 🤦♀️

I consider myself a fan of Charlie Kaufman's work, but just because I'm a fan doesn't mean that I have to agree with everything he says. Sure, I do think he made some valid points, but his overall thesis is flawed. His suggesting that because Anomalisa is an independent film made for an 'adult' audience, while Inside Out is studio film made for children that the latter doesn't have any artistic value compared to the former. I'm sorry, but even a film backed by a corporation like Disney can have artistic merit. Also, a film that categorize as "adult" is just descriptive, it does not in any way inform the quality of said film. Of course, I recognize that I can be misunderstanding him but that is how his argument came across.
@JaidenOnYoutube2 жыл бұрын
I think he was implying that animated films should have categories and that they shouldn't be lumped together just because they're animated. For example Best animated comedy, drama, etc. instead of "Best animated feature".
@realityshifter33992 жыл бұрын
@@JaidenOnKZbin I think that's the best version of his argument, but it I suspect that Kaufman would feel the same way if both Anomalisa and Inside Out was nominated for Best Picture.

he means that his film anomalisa is a straight up mainstream mature drama that's rated R, how does that film fit in with a category of shaun the sheep movie and a Pixar children's film? and the fact that when inside out won the Oscar and had woody and buzz present it was just straight stupid. that was just like rubbing it in there faces.

eveyone's missing the point. he's saying animation is not a genre, it's an art style. anomalisa is a drama, and shouldn't be categorized under a "genre" as vague as animation.

He's already won an Oscar, and been nominated for others. Based on how small his filmography is, he;s had incredible success at the Oscars. There is nothing to be "ungrateful" for, you missed the point they were making completely.

The Time Waster Did I ever said they weren't good storytellers? No. ESotSM is one of my favorite films ever. Animated movies are animated movies no matter the subject. They wanted Anomalisa to be recognized as something different, even something better than regular animated movies, which tend to be kid friendly. But I'm sorry, if your movie is animated then you belong in te animation category, no matter if is more oriented to an adult audience. The movies from Studio Ghibli and Laika are also very different from Pixar and Dreamworks films, and nobody is asking from special recognition. Jeez, even in the live action category the movies are radically different. Comedies mixed with sci-fi, historical dramas, etc. I can recognize this people talent but I don't have to agree with everything they say. They're being arrogant af.
