Not really because it's possible to have socialist behaviour without the need for central state control. For example, imagine friends out for dinner and one person doesn't quite have enough money for the shared bill. Say they perhaps went through an expensive divorce or lost their job. Doesn't really matter. The other friends each chip in a bit more to compensate and thus the full bill is met. Now you could say there are socialist ideals in action here but without any coercion from a hierarchical authority. Each friend decided voluntarily to do what they did, they were free to do as they choose, which fulfills the 'liberty' aspect of libertarianism in combining both socialist and libertarian ideals. It's not therefore an oxymoron. Actions can exhibit both ideals which is pretty much at the core of anarchist/socialist-libertrianism. That being said, I'm not a huge fan of political labelling. It can mischaracterise easily as we have seen with communism and capitalism (which in modern western countries could be called many things besides capitalism).

I had a house that was just sitting empty, only used in the summer, as a getaway, for a couple of weeks. I got an email from a young couple, with a six year old son, that had been kicked out of the house they were renting because the owner was selling it. I prayed about it and got a good feeling from the Lord, so let them move into my house, set on about half an acre of land, in the country, with lots of fruit trees. The house was almost unlivable, but good enough for this old grandpa, but not the wife. Anyways, let them move in, they got the roof fixed, remodeling the entire house, putting in new windows, the works and now that couple are like my own kids. They come to visit, bring lots of veggies from their garden, and, one day when they get ahead, I will sell them the house dirt cheap. We are both happy campers, lol!

The primary answer to "I believe that you don't have a right to property you legally own" is "Go live in North Korea. They agree with you. Completely."
@jx__xj6308
@jx__xj6308 Жыл бұрын
Not really. In Singapore, over 80% of people don't own their own property and live in social housing and that is a country that is talked about in glowing terms by the leaders of the UK and the US. In fact the UK government has referenced Singapore many times. There are many many different ways to organise housing and living. Ultimately, ownership is just a bit of legal paperwork. It's a question of priorities. In the history of humanity, property ownership as an individual pursuit is a very recent thing and it's mostly been driven by banks for obvious reasons.

@jx__xj6308
@jx__xj6308 Жыл бұрын
@@karlostj4683 No point, just showing that not owning your own property isn't inherently a negative thing and indeed may be preferable provided there's a strong legal framework of tenants rights. Personally I would rather pay rent to my local community (or a local community bank/investment fund) than to a private landlord or mortgage lending international bank. My landlord isn't going to improve infrastructure in my area, invest in public transport, build libraries and invest in public services. He's gonna go on holiday 3 times a year (which is actually what he does, paid for by me and my fellow tenants). It's all fictional anyway, just bits of paperwork. The nature of ownership means what exactly? Hmm.

@@jx__xj6308 Check out two (2) books by Hernando de Soto. "The Other Path" and "The Mystery of Capital". Also know this: 1. If there is no such thing as "private property" then there is no such thing as theft - because you cannot be guilty of stealing something if no one can own it by right. 2. Without a right to private property, you cannot feed yourself - that food in your hands is not yours by right, so anyone can take it away. This extends to clothing yourself and sheltering yourself.

@@karlostj4683 So, you're a legalist. You have a lot of faith in the institution of law, I don't. They're given down by state authorities and can change on a whim. how you fix a kid like that is after he says he doesn't believe in property rights is you take something from him, just walk up and take something, when he complains tell him he has no right to the thing you just took, that is how a world with no property rights works, stronger people will take from weaker people and might will be the only rule
@jx__xj6308
@jx__xj6308 Жыл бұрын
That makes no sense. Those beloved property rights of yours don't stop people from burglarising houses, from stealing cars and other possessions from people do they? Besides, property rights could mean anything. It's just laws and paperwork. They differ all across the world. It's the inherent nature of 'ownership' that is debatable. You could organise that in a multitude of ways (community ownership, co-ops/shares/private etc). That's what they're talking about, not people just having a free-for-all like you are claiming. I've never seen anyone suggest that in any anarchist literature i've read on property. One thing is for sure though, it's hard to argue that the present property rights are working for many people. For example renters in the UK, which has a large property economy, spend an average of 36% of their income on rent now compared to 10% in the 1970's. Why? Because the government sold off the social housing stock, thus removing an essential alternative for people and pushing more people into expensive private rentals which are rife with exploitation - citizentruth.org/study-proves-landlords-exploit-the-poor. Now most people will admit the UK housing market is completely broken and it's actually badly affecting the economy at this very moment - slow economic growth due to high living costs meaning people have less disposable income to spend elsewhere in the economy. This has created a large and profitable (for a few) but unproductive rental economy within society. As like other western societies it's a consumption driven model, which relies on people spending. So yeah, it's a serious problem.
@good2goskee

@@jx__xj6308 you said, "It's the inherent nature of 'ownership' that is debatable. You could organise that in a multitude of ways (community ownership, co-ops/shares/private etc)" Who brainwashed you with such dribble? FLASH! I don't care what property rights are across the world, on the planet Venus, or in places that have nothing to do with me....why should you? If I have worked extra hard, lived below my means, saved excess and ultimately fairly exchange my saved excess wealth to attain property, there is no issue. I have delayed gratification when lazy people are buying $1200 Iphones they feel entitled to, made sacrifices by starting early and working late while young Gen Z'ers or early Millennials are more concerned with tic-tok or spending $16 on an avocado on toast while taking extended lunch breaks, and I employed creativity and skills others do not have in exchange with someone who feels what I offer is worth more than the property they are willing to exchange. We live in a competitive world where you earn and are not entitled to much of anything... like it or not= reality. You said, property rights are just "It's just laws and paperwork". That is the most dumb-ass thing I have heard in a very long time. Property rights in the United States and like countries are evidence of freedoms offered to the common citizen which were not offered to those in lands with dictators and despots. There are millennia of examples proving this point in Asia and Europe. Property rights are not only a cornerstone of freedom but of wealth building and increasing standard of living. Property rights are often a result of fighting for freedoms and great sacrifice for society. This is not my opinion... this is pure unadulterated fact. There is a reason why N. Koreans, East Germans, Russians, Romanians ect escaped their asses out of these Socialist Republics and to come to the West. Ever ask the question why Americans, Canadians, Brits and Australians were not sneaking away to live in the USSR, Cuba, and North Korea? Two weeks ago, I spoke to a senior citizen who ESCAPED with their life from a Communist world you are painting as good. His comment was, "young people with these idealistic Socialist notions have no idea of the dark realities of Communism and Socialism". In essence, I guess the old gentleman is saying you don't don't know what blessings you have until you lose them.

@@stevemaynor2624 Well I'm in my forties but thanks. It's quite simplistic viewpoint to say all kids want everything for free. People know they are being fucked over and want an end to it. It's a completely different thing.

@@stevemaynor2624 If 4 were empty and he didn't need them and other people would die without shelter, it's fair. I'm willing to hear a reasonable justifiction though for hoarding properties one doesn't require?

Er, the only person I saw getting triggered is the weird angry guy on stage shouting. The student was calm and articulated his point of view pretty clearly in my opinion, regardless of whether one agrees with it.

Charlie really turned me off in this one. He didn't even let the kid get to his question. I don't recall Kirk getting so offended so quickly just because someone has different views as him. Most people with five house are assholes.
