This is just completely refreshing in the middle of this pandemic.

Exactly Ken! I happen to be one of those "old folks" and I've never played my horn more than I have these last two years - or listened to the masters like Bird.

Great upload. I think this is the best recording and highlevel of playing by Charlie Parker I've heard - Great arrangement by Gil Evans and great band and the incredible Dave Lambert Singers. Great recording. Thanks much for publishing this.

Everyone knows him as old folks Like the seasons he comes and he'll go Just as free as a bird and as good as his word That's why everybody loves him so. Always leaving his spoon in the coffee Tucks his napkin up under his chin And that yellow cob pipe is so mellow, its ripe But you needn't be ashamed of him. In the evening after supper What stories he would tell How he held the speech at Gettysburg for Lincoln that day You know I know that one so well. One thing we don't know about old folks Did he fight for the blue or the gray? For he's so democratic and so diplomatic We always let him have his way. --- In the evening after supper What stories he would tell How he held the speech at Gettysburg for Lincoln that day Yes, I know that one so well. Some day there will be no more old folks What a lonely old world this will be Children's voices at play will be still for a day The day they take old folks away. Songwriters: WILLARD ROBISON (music) & DEDETTE LEE HILL (lyrics) (1938)

even the great ones sometimes want a few trial runs. listen to what happens after parker calls "cut one more, right now, right quick", at 12:31.

I’ve been a big fan of Parker and Evans and Lambert Hendricks and Ross for many years now but this recording is disappointing to say the least... Parker and Evans and the band are good but the Dave Lambert singers sound terrible here... Way overcrowded for the vocal arrangements and they are horribly not together at all...

Lol to my simple mind it’s just what my black ass needed today never heard nothing like it before until my learning of the music history. I hear you though

Unfortunately White people singing background took away from the tune , Black were ripped off, Album covers had white faces on the top.As well as Parker played,we had to hear that shit in the background as if it was the melody.
@blackandwhitejazz2 жыл бұрын
Huh? Both composer and lyricist were white. The singing and the lyrics are pretty corny, but not nearly as bad as rap.
@AMEER-114-10 ай бұрын
@@blackandwhitejazz Well.. Worse than "corny" that you said... Its sounds more like when you see the corn in the toilet mixed in with the crap.

I didn’t know this was a controversial thing. I wonder how Charlie felt. I loved lyrics. Interesting observation? Beautiful song let’s now ruin it. I wonder how Charlie felt. Sounds perfect and I like the lyrics. It sounds accurate about something subconscious to the nature of today and yesterday and tomorrow! 🏌🏾♂️🌃🕊
