The dad standing in the aisle at the store talking to the random guy and taking forever is so unbelievably accurate. When I'd go to the store with my dad and he'd start a conversation with someone, I knew we were going to be there for an eternity. And as I get older, I find myself doing the exact same thing.

@@roaringlaughter3812there's a part of it too that, as we get older, old contacts die (sometimes literally) and making new ones is difficult but a 30 minute conversation with some stranger at a store can make you feel a bit more grounded.

@molonlabe2645 don't feel bad. I live in the deep south and I'm encountering these exact things you guys in the Midwest are. My Dad owned an independent paint, wallpaper & hardware store in Chicago. When he got older, he worked at JC Licht. All the contractors followed him because he knew everything about paint (he could mix color without the computerized system) and hardware, and he was a no bs kind of guy with a sarcastic sense of humor. When he decided to retire, corporate called to try to convince him not to retire. "Why are you retiring?" My dad: "Because I'm old!" In his older years, we'd go to various Ace Hardware stores all the time (he'd point out which ones were better than others) or Menards. To this day, I love finding old hardware stores - the ones with narrow aisles that still sell nails and screws individually from large barrels - just to hang out. I miss my totally midwest Dad, who knew how to fix everything. 😢
