Hello Charlie. After 45 years of struggling and trying different trumpet methods this was the simple trick that made trumpet playing easy and fun. Now I don't need to worry "how will my lips work today?"

Total revelation both in sound Fidelity and range...my teacher demanded I hold the trumpet straight out ....I have an mild overbite, your test found a perfect trumpet position angled 25 percent down to its original position....I have much a more natural pop, thank you Charlie.

Thanks so much for this tip! I was playing at the wrong angle for years...just imitating some of the greats: Freddie, Nicholas Payton... etc. I did your test and man I can now make some jumps in register that I couldn’t do before. I felt like I had to change my setup to get high notes and couldn’t understand how guys could play several octaves with the same setup up.. thanks again

Charlie, you are the best online trumpet tips teacher and I don’t say that lightly. Unlike some arrogant players, one in particular, you have no selfish arrogance, you speak low but clear and your horn tone is just beautiful. Keep doing what you are doing because the young trumpeters and other beginners, intermediate and likely some pros could use these vids. Thanks. G

WHY DIDNT I WATCH THIS VIDEO YEARS AGO I was just doing my normal practice stuff and noticed I was pressed on too hard on my bottom lip /teeth. Decided to google ‘trumpet overbite’ to see if anyone was talking about angle and there you are. Of course you’ve got the perfect video Anyway, just followed your advice and I can’t believe how much of a difference it’s made. I’m not sure if I was too low or high before, but just being aware of where I should be aiming for means I can be more consistent This video + the embouchure video are absolutely essential for all trumpeters, I think THANK YOUUU

I played for years with jaw put forward and trumpet in straight position. I always had a very open and rich tone, but limited range cause I couldn´t do no register jumps with tonguing a-ä-e-i. Weeks ago I found out what you are talking about - the natural jaw setting and it is true, all of the sudden the articulation goes by itself, but in my case the tone turned to total crap. I hope it is just because of changing old habits and developing the new path. Sometimes I think I´ll nver be able to play again... Thanks for the vid, though.

René Mareau hey man I'm having the same problem and fear you used to have. My tone used to be open and rich but now because of accidently changing my embochure trying to play high with practicing incorrectly, my tone turned to crap and aldo I can play higher, I'm scared of never getting my tone back. Do you still have this problem? And Charlie, if you could help me out on figuring out what I can do to get my tone back I'll be eternally grateful man

Thank you. This is the only video that exposes this problem properly. I always knew something was fundamentally wrong. Playing the trumpet was always at least slightly "uncomfortable" and uncertain. Lower register always out of tune and raspy. Mid register always and exclusively brilliant. Upper register driven by the lower lip and once I get to high D my lips didn't know what to do as if they couldn't move anywhere. And I never felt tension in my corners and that's because I never used them. Now I feel the corners in use. I've lost my range but the low notes are so much deeper and warmer. Mid register is consistent as well. I think it'll just take time to regain the range but I didn't have much of one to begin with due to not having the proper use of my embouchure. Hopefully will get good gains in the future out of this. Will reply to confirm the progress. Thanks again!

Yes! learning with a stand of music in front of me, I have had to adjust to be able to see the sheet music and I have grown familiar with playing slightly off center of my lips to the left. I've been wondering about this for awhile. I naturally play at a slightly lower angle than what you do according to this video, and I've been trying to play more parallel to the ground, but I've never been able to have the same range or sound quality. I assumed it was because I had formed bad habits when I first learned how to play. I tilted my head back ridiculously far to keep the same angle in relationship to my face but still have the 10 degrees above parallel required for marching.

Hey Charlie what you are explaining in this video is really interesting and many people underestimate this topic. I've always played with jaw in natural position (I've an overbite just like yours, maybe a little bit bigger) and I felt comfortable with that but I had problems with range. I found out the reason was that the lower lip wasn't vibrating since it was completely underneath the upper one. So I decided to experiment a different embouchure with the teeth aligned (jaw forward) and in a couple days the I could play almost an octave higher although I felt a little bit of jaw pain. Should I just try to get back to the natural jaw position and let the lower lip go out? Thanks in advance.

Hi Charlie! I have overbite as well and I was told that my front teeth should align, meaning that I have to push out my lower jaw, in order to form a correct and healthy embouchure - so do you mean now that I actually don't have to do it? Thanks!

I have not played for very long, but I'm pretty sure I'm doing something wrong. I used to play almost straight down, but for the past 6 months I've been trying to raise my trumpet without affecting my posture. Now I play rather upwards for low notes, but I have to go back to playing straight down in order to hit a high C. Do I just need a better embouchure, or is my technique fundamentally wrong? I should add that my tone in any range is much worse when I play pointing down.

What about the mouthpiece position on the lips? I mean, when I do lip buzzing, it doesn't happen in the middle of my lips, but a little bit left from it. But when I play the trumpet, it's most comfortable, if I place the mouthpiece in the middle.
@CharliePorter
@CharliePorter 10 жыл бұрын
Its ok if your mouthpiece is a little off center to one side or the other. However, it must be the same position that you play in...it is the same thing. If it isn't working when you play in the same position as your trumpet playing then it is one of two things, most likely. If you are getting air only and no buzz, they are too open...focus the lips a little more. If the sound is distorted and hard to blow the air through then you are too tight and must create a larger space between the lips...relax the aperture. Good luck!

Don't change it. Especially not if you don't have someone who can assist you and really knows what he's doing. As Jens Lindemann says: Never change embouchure if you practice and listen to yourself the embouchure will start working the way it is supposed to. :)
