Charlize's home language is Afrikaans, which is a language that evolved from the Dutch language taken over by white settlers in the 1600s and 1700s. About half of white South Africans are Afrikaans-speaking at home, and the rest are English-speaking. Charlize studied English at high school, it was a compulsory subject, but she spoke it with a strong Afrikaans accent. It's true that she really "learnt" English in the US, and so her accent is a fairly generic (not regional) American one.

thank you for the lovely comment and input.. these days I think it might be a very optimistic estimate thinking that out of the around 70 million South Africans half of do speak proper afrikaans, my experience is that it has in fact increased in with spread comprehension yet a lot of things gear towards English as main :) but afrikaans as a language is still going very strong :)

@MyMerlin1 It's actually a curious thing, but some people actually pick up an accent when they are abroad, whilst others retain their own accents. Maybe Charlize just picked up an American accent through living and working in the US.
