1) These are English Longways Country Dances. These + Quadrille square Dances from.France, Cielito, Media Cana, Perucon, etc. from Argentina + Uruguay, etc. are sort of couple dances.but all such dances focus on.gruops of couples +"pre choreographed patterns. ?(Much changed 1830s 40s when single couple polkas spread everywhere, followed by 1 couple waltzes, mazurkas (mazureks) schilottises, galops, etc? 2) In England, there is Jane Austen Society, Quadrille Club, etc.+performances &/or audience participation 3) Also, US has Jane Austem Society of N America, etc activities similar to English groups. 4) Instructions 4A) Sources ---books ( videos?) 4B) Overlap/ repetition--- the relatively few steps, . arm + hand holds. figures are continuously recombined for each named dance. FLAWLESS... I was transported to early 19th century England by this superb dance sequence.
@annhinchliffe83144 жыл бұрын
It's sad though that the choreographer didn't use early 19th-century sources; the dancing is almost entirely made up of movements from other centuries and other countries, and perhaps from the choreographer's imagination. As a revelation of the characters' feelings it may be very creative, but the dance and music bore really no relationship to any social dancing in Austen's time. However, the costume-designer and set-designer evidently went to a lot of trouble to bring the early 19th century to life, as your comment proves.

@@margaridaleitedealmeidavaz9541 Thanks; how nice to hear that you're interested in trad dances. It's difficult to answer your question because there are so many influences in this video clip. For example, the hand touching is like 16th-century Italian dance, and the shoulder touching is like 20th-century stage dance. If you want find out more: try the Historical Dance Society, who run classes and clubs mainly in England: historicaldance.org.uk/. You can contact me via their website. (I don't know where you live, Margarida.) HDS has links to similar societies in Europe historicaldance.org.uk/links/section/1. There are other groups e.g. Early Dance Circle; and more information on earlydance.org/ which covers Europe and USA. Some groups distinguish between traditional dance, which can be more informal social dance for fun, and historical dance, which tries to interpret historical evidence -- but for fun, also! I hope you find a group you can dance with, after the pandemic is over.

@@annhinchliffe8314 I know almost nothing about dance, but I was getting distracted by how out-of-period it looked (especially the hand touching and the shoulder embrace as you mentioned). It felt very all-over-the-place like you said. There was no lining up in a reel, no promenading, no 4-pointed hands in a circle while you spin thingy, no trading partners....

I can't express how much this series has come to mean to me, in this moment, every time I watch this scene, I hear this melody, my heart starts beating faster. As soon as their hands touch, the melody becomes more intense, those smiles, the rhythm starts to speed up. It seems that at this moment all the problems of the world disappear, thoughts disappear, it's like flying. At this moment, you can always think only about the good, and not think about your future problems. I don’t know, but I will transfer this series to my living world, not only to the screen, these two lovers will always be with me. The most romantic dance I have ever seen.😔💔❤️

Do you guys realise that everyone wears a mask, apart from them?? because they are their "truest self" when they are together. I'm crying
@annhinchliffe83142 жыл бұрын
Yes, I wondered what the masks were for. Historically incorrect, of course; masks would be worn at fancy-dress balls but not for a social dance like this. However, since it's a totally incorrect made-up dance anyway (sorry, figurinessquirt, if this spoils the magic), the producer evidently chose a very free artistic invention rather than accuracy. Odd, since as mentioned above, all the other aspects are well researched.

Screenwriter Andre Davis on Sanditon ending. When Charlotte realizes she has feelings for Sidney? Was it the DANCE? Exactly. Our composer and choreographer came together, and everybody and said this dance is when Charlotte realizes she is in love with him. Because up until that point she couldn't really understand what her feelings were. This dance is supposed to signify her eureka moment of, ‘Oh my god I have feelings for this person.’ That is what that dance is. Another question that comes up a lot on social media: why did you choose to give Sanditon an unhappy ending? Well, really because we were rather banking on having a second series. We certainly didn't want to leave Charlotte to be in despair for too long, that was the reason. But one could also say that audiences, I think, are perhaps too used to having all their expectations fulfilled. I did feel sorry-a lot a lot of people were posting on Twitter in the UK, "How could you, how could you?" "I've had just such a rotten year, and I was just counting on Charlotte and Sydney having a happy ending. Now, you leave us with this, Mr. Davis." I did feel a bit guilty. But anyway, if we get a second series, we're certainly going to eventually give Charlotte an ending that she would like.

What is this kind of dance called? With the hands behind the back and the little hand touches?
@annhinchliffe83144 жыл бұрын
Good question. I'm afraid it's a sequence invented by a modern choreographer who seems to have borrowed bits from many different eras. For example, the hand-touching at the start isn't found in anything later than 16th-century Italy, and the shoulder to shoulder swivel isn't found earlier than 20th-century ballet and ballroom. The actors did do a few arm-lifts from waltzing early-1800s-style but those moves at the time would have been done slowly, each couple choosing their own movement, not everyone doing the same. In any case, it couldn't be a waltz with all the changes of tempo. The only Austen-era dance I know of that changes tempo is La Boulanger [sic], a dance-romp, which is mentioned in P&P. I'd love to know why the choreographer decided to train everyone in a sort of Pan's People or Strictly Come Dancing routine rather than use one of the hundreds of authentic dances (square, circle, longways or couple) as a basis to showcase the characters' relationship. Authenticity, slightly adapted, worked fine in other dramas such as Poldark!
