Let’s not forget the outstanding performance of Stephen Boyd as Messala. Great villain and his back got pretty banged up in that chariot race because his harness slipped. RIP gentlemen. You’ve entertained a lot of us for many years.

That chariot race was so well done, considering it was in the late 1950s. I don't think filmmakers today or in the future, with the technology and money available, will ever come close to pulling off something like that.

The 1925 silent version of Ben Hur is outstanding and still holds up (in my opiniion). The chariot race is a mind boggling, it is well worth viewing. Check it out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZbZaqCejq6Ihtk

The spirit of God was on that movie from beginning to end! I was only 6 years old when I saw it on the big screen, and it effected me for life! I believe it had a part in my coming to Christ later in my 30s. I fell in love with this movie from the moment I first saw it at 6 years old!

I looked it up before watching and honestly, honestly, the only images I saw were about chariots... Then I watch the movie last night and the the chariot scene was only about half hour or less... And the span of the movie is 20 minutes away from 4 hours! I really enjoyed every seconds of it... Marvelous work.

Both Ben Hur and The Ten Commandments are amazing cinema! Some might turn their noses up at the religious elements, but these are great stories, with real, human motivations and emotions, set to lush backdrops of a world long past, yet so believable. Charlton Heston's performances (and those of his fellow actors) are not to be missed. =^[.]^=

Awesome action scene - one of the all-time best. Yakima Canut staged the sequence: it took over a year to prepare for and film and over 50,000 extras were used.

...met Mr Heston 3 times at various events in the 70s and early 80s. He always always mentions Yakima Canut for his outstanding work during the filming of Ben Hur especially during the chariot sequence. It's was unusual in that day and age for stars to credit the stunt people. See the original Stagecoach (John Fords film) for another Yakima Canut Incredible moment in cinema stunt history.

The question of casting. Up to today when I see *Ben Hur", my heart grieves at the fact that Burt Lancaster turned down the title role. With the utmost respect, I maintain that Lancaster would have been the better "BenHur" . Imagine Lancaster's tortured face when, on the city steps, uttering the immortal words'-" I know this Man" .
@nybuffymeister8328

Fascinating switch if Lancaster had played Ben Hur. Heston was superb in the role, and looked more Jewish imo. Additionally Heston was perhaps appeared in a state of wonder at the revelation you noted. Lancaster might have appeared less so. What ifs are Always interesting non the less. Loved both as actors. Heston a little bigger helped.

@@gulmerton2758 And yet they keep REMAKING them. Alamo, Ben Hur, True Grit, others. Using CGI to replace what they did for real. So WHAT if Charlton Heston overacted a bit, it was only in a few scenes, the rest were great.

@@xhagast Heston did not overact. William Wyler would not accept anything less than excellence and the best from actors including Stephen Boyd. The craft of acting was long gone after 60s. Today these overpaid jokers don’t even know how to emulate Haya Harareet, Hugh Griffith, Clark Gable, Laurence Olivier, Vivian Leigh, Ingrid Bergman, Richard Widmark, Bill Holden, Jack Lemmon, Burt Lancaster, and James Stewart. Although few who never got an Oscar says how inbred Academy is. Kirk Douglas, Peter O’Toole, Tony Curtis, Deborah Kerr, Barbara Stanwyck, Marilyn Monroe, Amy Adams, Michelle Pfeiffer, William DeFoe, and Jim Carrey.

To this day that chariot race scene in Ben Hur is the only movie scene I've ever watched that's made me wonder if what I'm watching is real or fake. It all looks so real, especially the crashing the trampling parts. Just incredible filmmaking that far surpasses all of the endless, mindless "superhero" drivel to come out of Hollywood these days.
