I love that even tho the show was called Xena, I never felt like it was just about Xena. It was always Xena and Gabrielle. Like Lucy said "It was a 2 star show." It wouldnt have been nearly as good if it was all about one or the other. And they didnt just use Gabrielle as a "sidekick" she actually had stuff happen to her , got pregnant, had a baby, had to kill her daughter and fight her grandson. It was really an amazing balance.

I have come to believe that the writers developed Xena and Renee based on the personalities of Lucy and Renee respectively

To me Gabrielle was never Xena's sidekick however Joxer was both Xena and Gabrielle's sidekick.
