Good morning from Portland Oregon. I have not commented in a while. Been a bit off with all that is happening in Portland and the fact the fact that I have not worked in a while. But I am back at work, day off today, and feeling good again. Your show had a huge part in getting me through the last 9 months and I wanted to let you know and to thank you. Keep up keeping us going.

@@ThatPedalShow Cutting to pre-recorded parts helps tremendously with the pacing and dynamics of a roughly 1 hour video. Also, Dan is an awesome repository of technical info when it comes to how guitar gear works, but explaining it off-the-cuff is not his forte. There's often awkward pauses as his cognitive gears grind trying to find words that the muggles will understand. Pre-recording gets around this beautifully. Banter, tangents, and demoing still needs to happen in the room though. That's what makes TPS what it is.

This pedal is interesting but it is just really a mini mixing console in a box with fuzz and EQ no? I mean it is cool looking and can get close to these overdrive pedals BUT it is hifi. Like a console preamp. If you already have a neve/api preamp in your recording chain it is redundant if you already have a TB/OD/Fuzz you dig. Further live, I do not think that hi fi sound will be easy to discern. It is nice, but I think if it only comes close to the real pedals, 800 bucks can be spent a lot smarter. The reality is that every damn kind of pedal that uses the same 15 or so FX has been over done to infinity so now we are turning pedals into mini mixing consoles to keep the interest up. I think we are entering into overkill land here.

@drkevns
@drkevns Жыл бұрын
@@daviddorrian5349 Good question. I actually sold it about a month ago lol. I was using an "ampless" setup and the CB Preamp was really important to shaping that sound. I've since switched my setup to a Prince of Tone going into a Blues Deluxe/Ox Box loaded with an Alnico Cream. I basically found "my" sound and no longer NEEDED the Preamp. I only sold it to fund other things; I still think it's one of the best I've owned. I will also confirm that it's a pretty noisy pedal. Side note: I have the CXM1978 and can't imagine not using it.

That Tomatotone is truly impressive. It's an expensive pedal, yes, but from what I've heard here it can capably replace any number of overdrive pedals. In a live setting, I suspect few people would ever know the difference. The fact that it has MIDI switching capability means you can essentially jump between each of your favourites or between gain and level settings for solos.

Wow, you've done a really good job at justifying this pedals eye watering price tag. I'm honestly staggered how well the tomatotone stood up against these classic circuits, and not only imitating but sometimes adding to their original sound. Coincidentally, I fell in love with my range master pedal today. First time back practicing with the band, using my new-to-me 1962 Jaguar. The Laney Black Country Customs TI Boost really brought out the character of the Jag, but added enough grit and balls to it to make it sound fat. And playing loud for the first time in months really put a smile on my face :) thanks for keeping me company through lockdown fellas, you do more good than you realise

Best advantage (other than massive flexibility) is, “Hey, I love my Fuzz Face, but"........( too much mid, wrong mid, etc. etc. etc.)”, and you can tune it just the way you like it, hit save, and done. That, plus my Benson Preamp is already my favorite tone pedal. Awesome job! 🎸

A lot of debate online about whether this episode was a shameless plug for the Automatone. Clearly not, but even if it was, this episode was hugely educational. It broke down what makes classic overdrives sound the way they do, and went on to use the Automatone as an educational tool to demonstrate how it all works. Similar to Dan's Frankenstein tape delay build. Outstanding effort.
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Andy. Re the shameless plug bit, the question would be, ‘why?’. What would be our motivation for shamelessly plugging something that we don’t sell, or get any financial compensation for selling... for example Sweetwater (whom we collect a small amount of affiliate revenue from) aren’t even a Chase Bliss dealer! I think it’s a reflection of people’s own stance on how they would do it. Most people just cannot understand that we do not get - and have never been - paid to feature any product. Thanks for the comment!

It doesn't, but it is a huge plus if one has a midi-controlled board and can recall all those sounds. I revised my midi board a few weeks ago because of the automatone and found out as well that the automatone can sound like a lot of the pedals I considered to be in that board with it. You can save the space for other sounds. Or f.ex. boost a Sweet Honey OD with automatone sounding like the Sweet Honey (or a Klon with a "Klon", a KOT with a "Klon" etc.) if you like :)

That was also my takeaway as well. After playing the CXM I purchased I realized something different and wonderful was going on in that brain of his. That pedal is better than any other pedal I’ve ever played in the Reverb, Modulation realm. Nothing is really close imho. I own a King of Tone, a TS-10, 808 and 9, I have a Klon and a Ceriatone Centura ( basically the same exact thing ) and a Fuzz Face. I also now have a Chase Bliss Pre Amp MK II on the way and should be arriving in the next week or so. This is the first time I’ve ever considered selling my King of Tone but I don’t even on on if I heard a difference between the Pre-Amp and the KOT. The Tube Screamer tone wasn’t as close, but it was pretty close after some tweaking. A good Tube Screamer is hard to beat. A Cali 76, a Dyna-ssoR and a TS-10 or the Keeley 808 with or without a Klon boost is my singing sustained blues tone and would be happy with just that and some amp reverb. But at the end the day, Joel from Chase Bliss, with the help of Benson, managed to put all of those pedal tones in that one pedal somehow and I’m still awestruck by how close it is. And why limit when the pedal world is exploding. Besides the Tube Screamer, to me, they were all there. But for me, the Automatone’s fuzz tone and options ( germanium, silicon, gated, open ) is one of the best fuzz tones I’ve ever heard minus vintage Tone Bender’s and Fuzz Faces. The sky rocking of prices in Chase Bliss pedals on Reverb I think is a reaction to people reacting to just how good the CXM 1978 Reverb and the Pre Amp Automatone’s and how they really are that good.

I love the show and listening to you guys play, and I’ve learned a lot about pedals watching, but I think you kind of missed the boat on how revolutionary this pedal really is... it’s great that you can make it sound relatively close to all those classic pedals, but what this thing does is truly amazing, when you get MIDI involved. All those sliders can be sequenced/modulated via control messages to *animate* them while you’re playing, so all manner of swell, envelope filter and tremolo stuff is possible on top of the raw tones. I know that stuff can be a bit harrowing when you don’t come from synth-world like I do, but it just seems to me that this device is a lot more mind-blowing than simply looking at it as a classic pedal emulator with presets.

So glad you guys went to the trouble of “profiling” the more popular drive/fuzz options. It definitely requires a fair bit of ingenuity to hold the viewers attention beyond the initial novelty features of a pedal like this. That said, in an attempt to further bolster my own confirmation bias and make the financial argument a bit more palatable, I’ll say this - For my needs it was absolutely worth the pair of Keeley Workstations I’d sold off to afford it and I’d bet there are others that if given the choice might very well be able to justify the MKII under similar circumstances.

One thing that wasn’t mentioned is the expression pedal. I think you can map it to any or all sliders, giving you a lot of additional control on the fly.

I have one and an expression pedal and you can automate any of the sliders - so it is really easy to get that "volume clean up" using an expression pedal.

Now try the same thing but with a MXR Classic 108 Fuzz, Benson preamp/any nice OD and Boss EQ-200 (pre and post the OD) instead of the Automatone. My guess is that EQ pedals are way more important than any magic diode or transistor.

Such a great episode! A quick question: would you say the mkii also replicates the “feel” of each pedal you compared it to, or does it have its own feel that remains constant through its various settings? Thanks!

Great question. I think it always feels like it has more dynamic and headroom. Feels bigger than everything which is either desirable or not so much. I like it much. Mick here.

This pedal is definitely not for me. Maybe for recording, sure. But live, I need two or three sounds that work, and usually guitar into amp is one of them. I totally get who uses a different approach though.

I actually believe you two would do far above chance but an interesting angle would be to have one of you blinded to which pedal was on, although I'm guessing you'd detect the one by many things besides the specific tones. Thank you both for putting on Such Great Entertaining content! You two and the topic are so fun and informative to watch!

So, one Could sell all one's boutique pedals and get the Tomato. Maybe even recoup a little cash £/$ BUT the ability to stack them in mid gained multiples would be a difficult if not impossible emulation task. Q. @The Chaps - Did you manage to replicate the D & M Drive sounds I wonder ?

Fidelity. I get it. The most telling was the LP into the Klon. In comparison the Automatone sounded more transparent and amp like. The Klon had this artificial, slightly boxy sound that I remembered from my old s/n 64 unless the amp was really cranked, which probably masked it. When I had the Klon I was mostly playing an '86 335, so similar effect. It would be really interesting to use that setting on an Automatone stacked with other pedals in the same way Mick uses the Klon. Would you get more transparency and headroom? Chase Bliss should release that fuzz circuit with the eq on it. No need for the automation. It would rule the fuzz market.

Thank you as always gentlemen. The tomatotone is just over $1000 in Canada. So the question comes to mind if one is warranted if one already owns some of the pedals you were able to get through tweaking the tomatotone. Given that I cannot get into fuzz or tube screamers and have a Ceriatone “klon” and a Frost Giant tube screamer the only missing would be a King of Tone and I am on the waitlist for one. It appeared to take a lot of fiddling to get the tones you sought but you got there. I was more aligned with Mick’s earlier “not me sunshine” from a prior episode but now am wondering. Thanks as always, be well

In my mind's eye, I conceptualize this as basically three pedals in one unit: a fuzz, an amp in the box, and a graphic EQ. I see this as an an endorsement to the idea that a graphic EQ is the most important pedal on the board.

My boss EQ-200 gets a TON of work and sounds clean doing it. Heck, even my old EQ-20 sounded clean and made a world of difference in my rig. The EQ-200 just opens up more possibilities with the fact it's 2 x foot-switchable mono EQ's if you wish it to be. It's glorious.

This pedal is more than just your typical pedal. I have gotten Fender SR amp quality sounds from this. Breakup where every you want. EQ EVERYTHING. Was going over the roll off fuzz you were trying to do - Mick for your FF. If you ill the Fuzz on the pedal you can rollin just the transistor and bam - you are there - that wonderful glassy FF roll off - but w. more..... Fidelity! Rock on guys~

Cool episode, really liked the pedal introduction bits. I think it was worth mentioning that your tubescreamer is also modded for more bass I believe? I found that with king of tone tomato struggled to create that distortion characteristic (perhaps low frequencies were more saturated but cut from the output?). It seems like the tomato gets really close, as close as you could hope, and in a single pedal, but falls short on not having excess of controls over frequencies. To be able to decide throughout the whole spectrum how you push the frequencies into clipping but also being able to cut them in the output. And to do that with surgeon precision, even with just neighbouring frequencies. Perhaps compression controls as well? With only three eq parameters and one q control, plus the button features, it's shocking how close it can get to all of them. Like to a level where you wouldn't be concerned that it's off, just the nuances you love possibly not being there. And to be fair to the product's purpose, it's a single pedal that is very tweakable to almost anything, and not a exact copy of specific things. To sum it up, not my pedal, but for someone who gigs with plenty of sounds yet doesn't want to go to a single modelling amp unit, a brilliant device.

Not bad for a Tomato! I can see how, if you were thinking of dropping silly money on a Klon or a boutique klone and spending 3 years on the KoT waiting list, and were searching for your perfect TS and FF, and had G2 for the M1-D1, then being able to do all that and more with the Tomato would be well worth the £750. It's still a bit rich for me, though. Second show in a row in which Dan has stayed welded to the '65. In three months time Mick will still have the long rack of guitars next to him and Dan will have one guitar stand to put the '65 down on if he absolutely has to.
