Great stuff.......these players are amazing, but it does make you realize how just amazing Chase was. His pure power, sizzle, crisp/tight playing was in another realm of trumpet playing.

If that lead trumpeter plays that well in his sleep, imagine how he would play when he is awake! Seriously, that was amazing!

I was not aware until now that Bill Chase was lead trumpet for MF back in the late 50's. No wonder I still listen to them both. I dreamed of being able to play like either of them as well as Herb Alpert.

Mr. Chase was extremely talented and he is missed. Lord knows what he may have done if he lived as long as MF. I played tuba in high school, but aspired to be a trumpet player! 😹😹😹

It was a pleasure performing this tribute with a band of great musicians. Bill Chase would've been proud.

Thanks. I'm a big Bill Chase fan from way back when my music teacher played some Chase for us. One of the reasons I became a music teacher.

A very good try. It's hard to copy perfection and Chase was perfection. Most underrated band ever but then again, they had their own little niche that didn't appeal to the masses, except for Get it On.

Almost 40 years ago (yikes!) I attended Stan Kenton Jazz Clinic at Sacramento State college, Phil Rizzo was the arranger and the head jazz guy...lol I believe it was 1978. Jay Sollenberger and another trumpet player from Chase's third album (I cannot remember the name) were part of the "instructor band." We got to hear the play music that was written by third year jazz clinic students. It was a lot to handle as a 16 year old kid. 8VA takes on new meaning...

Interesting - I've never seen Eric using a crystal/lexan mouthpiece like he is here... A trumpet player to tackle the CHASE book like that is certainly NOT for the faint of heart! Kick it Eric!

Incredible, Always liked Bill. That's like 5 sharps he could play in, if what my friend, (horn player) told me was right. We had a blast trying to play this stuff in school rock/jazz bands, at Berklee, every year, outside school cover bands. At least I did on drums, trying to keep up with the speed metal horns ! We had 4 or 5 trumpets, some low brass. Reminds me of another very good band/horn player back then. Earl Sherman and 1276, from Boston, MA back in the late sixties, early '70's. He could come pretty close to Bill's talent back then. Haven't ever seen anybody posting any video of the band "1276" he was in ... ever. I guess they never made the transition to originals, don't know if they wanted to or not ...

I think that had Bill Chase lived, trumpet probably would have usurped electric guitar as a "main ensemble instrument" in Rock & Roll.

This guy matches Chase pretty good. Chase was an amazing group. Nothing like it since, and nothing today even comes close. Most "noise" today doesn't even qualify as music, a bunch of boring, un-melodic, namby pamby, millennial mush.

Hal, The Stevens-Costello system is back in print now. Second edition. Might help you. The problem with most trumpet systems is that they neglect the upper register in the formation of the embouchure. Roy Stevens figured this out and he ALMOST developed the holy grail for trumpets. Think about this, Why are trumpet players the only musicians who regularly find themselves unable to play the complete range on their instrent? Answer, Because the kids are taught wrong. Upper register should be learned first! You can't go two hundred MPH on a puny engine.
