Racing for the win: The FIRST loser at I-35 Speedway in the USRA modified

Before it was reconfigured about a dozen years ago, this track had longer straight away's and tighter, higher banked turns. In the video, that strip of green between the top of the berm and the base of the water tower is the original 1st and 2nd turn. It was a high banked dirt Martinsville. You had to know your stuff when it came to gear ratios.

Know that track, raced up there got caught up and broke left front brake line. Clamped it off (only one you don’t need) and salvaged a half way finish. My buddy ran there and had intake and carb sheered off due to another car being on top of motor. It can be rough up there. Glad y’all had strong finish. The dogs was definitely on his scent. Sometimes have to slow down to speed up. Excellent job

Track rubbered so not much else they could do. He was barely using his motor running the top. He mentioned he still was worried about going over the top.

I’ve see racers use those wehrs machine restrictors and I always wonder why not go to a different gear ratio and leave the motor unrestricted. Say if you are running a 6.0 gear drop down to a 5.50 and not lean out the motor. I understand you would loose some ability to drive off the corners but once you got that thing going around the top the mph should pick up and eventually turn the same rpm right? Or am I missing something? I’m just asking. It’s been almost 33 years ago since I ran latemodels with open motors. We didn’t have restrictors back then and we didn’t have corner speed like they do now.

the tech JD at I-35 doesn't even follow I-35 Speedways rules he disqualified a car saying that motor that was in the car shouldn't be in it even though the VIN number on that car says that was the size motor that was put in that car from Factory I-35 speedway is dishonest incorrupt!!!!!
