Still philosophical, but somehow more realistic now. I’m okay with that, though. That’s where I’m at in life too. Less “Life’s full of amazing things. Get after it, with as little drag as possible!” And more “Life is hard and shitty sometimes. Don’t make it harder on yourself than it needs to be. Invest in and cherish the things that matter. Discard the rest.”

Quick thing re: the importance of sunglasses: it’s important to both protect your eyes and get some sun exposure! The latter may support mental health, while the former is important for preserving vision (e.g., preventing macular degeneration). No intention to be a party pooper (and of course take this with a grain of salt and a google search), just advocating for folks to do what works best for them.

Chase got me into under seat one backpack years ago. I haven't looked back since. I found 35 liters is the max that fits under a seat (non European airlines) but you have no leg room. I went down to 28, 25, and then landed on a 20 liter bag. I absolutely love traveling with the Alpher one niner Whitley. The one item I bring with me that Chase didn't mention is a stretchy laundry line. I can't afford Merino wool yet so I buy quick dry clothes from Ross and pack two outfits plus sleeping shorts. I wash the clothes I wear each night and hang dry them. I'll put on the semi clean one and repeat until the end of the trip. I usually pack one soft T-shirt for the flight home though. I've used many of Chase's tips. They work. If you're new to traveling give them a try.

This is such a freaking GOOOOD video man. Just last night, I was on the fence about taking a weekend trip to So Cal to check out see friends and check out Palm Springs. After watching your video, I can’t believe I even hesitated for a second lol it’s a one hour flight, the flights are on sale, I can one-bag it, and it’s just a no-brainer. This video was so impactful. I love your longer videos. There are so many incredible nuggets of wisdom sprinkled throughout. Much love. Much appreciated.

Traveling with soap is helpful for when you go on that Danube River day cruise like I just did today in Budapest and there was no toilet paper or soap and we were about to eat finger sandwiches. That’s where the flushable wipes and a little liquid soap can make all the difference.

I work for a major airline and your 1st tip is a great one. Many times 3/4 of the way through boarding the agents will start checking carry ons to ensure an on time departure. Personal items that go under the seat never get taken. Good tip.

I have planned a 16 day trip around the world next month and I will be travelling with a 32L backpack (with a packable day bag for extended layovers). All but one of my flights allow carry-on and personal, but one only allows a personal item so I’m trying to I’m trying to go minimalistic. This video made me realize that it is possible to achieve it. Thank you and keep up the good work!

I travel with a specific soap bar (yes I know, its heavy) because as much as I love light and minimal travel, I've found my skin particularly my face skin, doesn't react well to most soaps used in hotels, hostels, Airbnbs, etc. After just two days of using their saps, I end up with irritated flaking skin. It's a very personal issue, so I know why it might seem odd. But having the same soap bar/brand I use at home, helps me enjoy my trips, without suffering thru rashes caused by allergic reactions

My "nice to have" are Tom Bihn leashes. Clip your tech pouch to a leash and attach it to the bag and you'll never lose anything. Do the same for passports, a wallet, or any other little accessory. Makes travel so much more enjoyable knowing where everything is and feeling like you'll never lose it.
@yasunari65
@yasunari65 8 ай бұрын
If you can manage one-bag concept, the freedom you have is really liberating. (The travel guru, Rick Steves is a big proponent of this.) I used to use 45L size bag, but now I travel with smaller, say Tom Bihn Synapse 25, for , say, a 10-day trip to Europe. With no heavy items in it, I can go the whole day walking around with the entire bag with no problem. No worrying about finding a luggage storage facility and all the hassle. One thing I noticed in many reviews, though, is that many travel bags offer small organizational pockets and many reviewers show them putting things like passport, phone, wallet, keys, etc. as an example of use for them. I never put any valuables like that in a backpack. Many backpacks offer lockable zippers for the main compartment but not those pockets. Also, if you have your phone in the backpack, you can't access it without taking the whole bag off your shoulder. For those reasons, I still have to have a small cross-body bag such as Tom Bihn Side Kick. I often leave the backpack in the overhead bin or rack on a plane or train, but the small bag stays with me strapped across my shoulders all time even while sitting on a plane, eating at a restaurant, or even visiting the lavatory and I have it on my side or front, not in the back. AND my valuables are in a pouch attached to the O-rings inside the bag so that cannot be snatched away.

The Tom Bihn Mini tray has been traveling with me for 3 years non-stop. It does give me that homey feeling in all the random places I sleep. It's part of my arrival setup that helps prevent me from forgetting things. I usually just pack it flat as the shape when stuffed doesn't work for me.

Thanks Chase it reminds me of my own experience. My first trip away on my own was 25 years ago and I gravitated to carryon only travel. I have found I now also changed over time. I have reduced the technical clothing due to micro plastics and look for more natural materials. I still wear jeans and wash them weekly. I don't have a capsule wardrobe because I frankly don't care about matching or perhaps I don't really have any dress sense. My trip to South America I used the Osprey Sojourn and it was my main travel bag. I even took home a carpet. Flipped it on its back to drag through Western desert sands in Egypt. Took it over subway stairs and cobbles in Europe. Big tough wheels. It finally gave up the ghost on loan but after 17 years. Now I just travel with a overhead bag and sometimes even underseat only.

I’ve got a dope setup where I clip a waterproof sling dive bag type thing to the bottom of my Cotopaxi Allpa 35 and then either take a Fanny pack or slim packable daypack like the Cotopaxi Tasra or a ratty old red Patagonia bag. It looks kinda like an old timey bedroll and backpacking pack but it’s surprisingly practical and not that inconvenient. And it lets me pack more layers and running/workout clothes without feeling guilty about space. Not for every trip but for longer multi week trips where I’ve got places to leave my bigger bag for a few days (Airbnb’s and hostels and such) it works really well. Or doing train travel around Europe. And I’ll probably use it for an NZ road-trip I got coming up

Great video Chase! I recently took a 1 month trip across Italy and then South America, and all of your videos have tremendously helped! I went with a 34L from Thule with a Matador packable backpack inside and hip pack as my personal item. I did take a soap bar that could also double as laundry soap (Dr Bronners unscented) and a towel since I was staying mostly in hostels. Also a dry bag to do laundry was a life saver!

I pack soap bc the smell of home is really grounding for me on longer trips - I use a squishy Nalgene travel bottle with the flip cap. Also stirling soap sells eau de toilette in little tiny spray bottles and those are great. Definitely agree on the overstuffing thing - I had a CHZ 22 nearly bursting for a 2 weeks and hated it, but I love it when it’s not quite full :)

Thank you Chase for your videos. Big fan for many years now. I once wrote you for advice about buying a GR2 40L and it worked perfect for one bag travel. After my GR2 40L I bought a TAD Fast Pack EDC and though I like it a lot, it does not work for one bag travel (at least for me). My advice is: If a person chooses less than a 35L bag its going to be hard to take all you need. Thank you again.

If you wear your heavy boots during flight and change into sandals once you arrived you still have to fit the heavy boots in your luggage. It's the same of course with sweaters, coats, etc. Your luggage has to fit the most bulky stuff you bring. So even if it's cold in the country of your departure (usually where you live) you have to dress in the expected clothing for the country you visit and see if all the rest fits inside the luggage. I agree a phone makes travel a lot easier than it used to be so I have an extra 'travel phone' (that's water and shockproof) and I put the local sim card in there. I suppose you have to inspire Americans to travel outside their country because many seem to have a lack of 'wanderlust'. Not so much for Europeans because they travel a lot and avoiding them is more an issue.

That Tom Bihn tray/bowl/stuff sack thingo using your idea of cutting a hole for a cable is a GAMCHANGER!! I’m dying to try this, would be great as my “I need to have all this shit on me but don’t need to carry it around during the day” like chargers and hard drives etc. I have it in a pouch/bag that I remove when I get to the destination. But the idea that I could have this be the pouch and then transform into a “tray” is so cool, in theory haha
