Funny thing about the Crayon analogy: Using a single crayon may SEEM like a waste of a perfectly good box of crayons, but as an artist, using a single crayon means I can focus on other aspects of crayon use, like how angle and force change my lines, which can be applied to other works to make my drawing better. I do all of my art on a Tablet, but drawing with a Pencil and Paper have absolutely helped me with my art. The same can be applied to character action games. Yes focusing on a single part of the game TOO MUCH will make it boring, but challenging yourself to say... Beat a mission in DMC using only Royalguard will inevitably help you develop as a player of that game, since you know that much more about the game from your challenge. This isn't to say that Using only one weapon is better than using everything in the kit, but limitations do in fact breed creativity.
@ChaserTech Жыл бұрын
That's a good point lol. Honestly I was aiming for the idea that if you have all the options in the world and only use one in a very repetitive way, that's something that I would not do. That's basically sums up what the analogy is supposed to be about but maybe I could have worded it better in this vid.
@palmabolp Жыл бұрын
That is kinda how Mayo% Ultrakill runs evolved. They were born out of mere mockery of Mayo, but bit later it showed the skill it actually takes to beat some really challenging levels, such as P-1 and P-2 with only the piercer. What Mayo did in this case however is playing with the piercer only, when he had little experience with the game. Limiting yourself to a certain material, tool or whatever in something as a challenge can absolutely help you improve, but I feel like it works when you actually know and understand the skill that you are putting to the test. It is kinda like if I was right now challenged to do a realistic protrait of a person with nothing but a single pencil with no eraser, while also having very limited knowledge on anatomy, proportions, perspective, shading etc. and not having drawn anything other than a doodle 5 months ago, it would take ages and I would be utterly miserable by the end of it. But if actually knew how to properly draw and all and knowing what I can do with the pencil I would probably find it fun. Personally, I did limit myself in other games and found it fun, because I knew how the game worked before doing it. And more experienced Ultrakill players found Mayo% kinda fun. I think you get the point by now.

I don’t think that the game’s aesthetic is very good, honestly. It looks muddied and like a very layman’s version of what “low polygon” games look like. I low key cannot make out what the enemies do sometimes because of how undefined everything is. The lack of peripheral vision, because it isn’t Third-Person, in such a fast-paced game, makes enemy encounters feel unmanageable and the hits that you take come out of left field (partly Skill Issue, partly preference). Not to mention that the entire premise and plot is what an emo teenager would think is awesome. The game has incredible depth but it has some hurdles that I personally find to lessen the experience. I’d rather play Vanquish again.

I've seen a lot of youtubers compare this game to other FPS such as Doom. Hell, I know this game from a video titled doom ripoff or smth. While there are some similarities between the two, this game blows all my expectations the second I get into it. And I'm starting to feel like comparing Ultrakill to Doom is really an understatement. So I'm really glad that I found a video that actually compares this game to the source inspiration, that I also try to get into lately because of Ultrakill (lol).
@crackaddict1692 Жыл бұрын
People compare it to Doom basically because it is an FPS that takes place in hell. Ultrakill clearly states that it is inspired mainly by Quake rather than Doom (although both have a lot of similarities and also Hakita mentions in the developer museum that Doom Eternal inspired helped him something of the weapons that I cannot remember). Calling it a ripoff of Doom Eternal is of course dumb since it completely lacks the resource management aspect; and while Doom kind of forces you to be optimal and play it smart, Ultrakill tell yo to go absolutely nuts and play however you want to, both of this approaches to gameplay clearly are inspired by Devil May Cry. The game is all about being stylish just like the DMC series. I’d say that the FPS part of Ultrakill (aside from the clear main focus on using guns) comes downs to the movement mechanics which have just as much importance in gameplay as the weapons mechanics.
My favorite thing about Ultrakill is just how much nuance there is to the weapons Example: The Marksman Revolver - Coin reflects bullet, pog - You can switch weapons after flicking coin. - Coin reflects the railgun laser - Coin can go through enemies. "hmm." - flick coin through enemy, shoot railgun through enemy to hit coin *+ULTRARICOSHOT* "hmm x2" - flick coin into Malicious Face's laser *+CHARGEBACK* this game is a literal dopamine factory when you pull this stuff off and I love it.

One of the problems I think when it comes to the whole crayon box analogy is that once again Fromsoft is kind of the source of the problem here but it’s not them really. It’s challenge runs or rather people who are so used to limiting themselves because they now feel bored that they didn’t overly restrain themselves. One of the most limiting factors for people is that first order optimal strategy where the creative nature of a game like DMC, Ultrakill, BOTW/TOTK allow you to take your time to learn, people generally will always fall back to old reliable and that can be a problem topic in and of itself. Some people have gotten off the optimal treadmill but loads of other people are still stuck to it.
@ChaserTech Жыл бұрын
Yeah a lot of people will focus on the optimal strategy. I bring up the crayon box analogy because you're told to draw something and the person doesn't care what it is, they just want you to draw something. So you do it in order to complete the task. But you're still being graded on how well you're doing in some cases.
@lonelyshpee7873 Жыл бұрын
It's a shame, because FromSoft games also allow for skill expression to a certain extent
@kveller555 Жыл бұрын
The silly thing here is that, at least in Ultrakill, playing stylishly IS the optimal strategy. Constantly swapping weapons and setting up combos lets you output a level of damage you just can't reach by spamming the same thing over and over (yes, even Projectile Boosting will be mediocre in certain situations). P% speedruns are a work of art for the same reason.

When railcoining a big enemy, the moment you first shoot an enemy when the coin is behind him causes a freeze-frame (very briefly stops time, it also happens with parries out of other things). This lets you quickly switch back to the revolver and throw another coin once you learn the timing, resulting in the railcannon hitting Enemy > Coin behind > Enemy > Newly thrown coin in front > Enemy

glad you enjoyed the game! since you love how weapons interact and since i saw how you have trouble dealing with some enemies here are few tips: - 4 coins + charged piercing revolver is essentially mini railcannon with lower cooldown - coins will always fly in same pattern, affected only by your velocity and camera angle, but that is consistent too, try creating muscle memory for shooting them - if you jump near the wall, try to slam and walljump shortly after, game will put you into weird state where it thinks you're falling for a long time with absurd velocity when you're really not (you can tell if you did that correctly by yellow particles around you), if you jump after landing in that state you will launch yourself into stratosphere, we call that slam storage, especially useful in cybergrind - all enemy hitscan attacks (like sentry guns precise shot) can be reflected with a well timed coin, game calls it chargeback on a style meter - nailgun is garbage compared to chainsaw launcher (high risk usage, limited use cases), swap both variants immediately after you find it (don't wanna straight up give you the location but i've heard electric druids might know something) - you can punch your coins with blue arm, when you do coin will hit nearest enemy, deal damage and launch itself up above the enemy still able to be shot, very cool combo which utilizes that is coin > punch > coin > shot - soldiers (blue&white enemy) are immune to all but red explosions, which means only effective explosions against them are nuke and mid-air rocket - street cleaners have weak point that instakills them with explosion if you hit it, the easiest way to proc it is to have them run at you, throwing the coin behind them and shooting it - use red arm, it not only creates shockwave, but also has (if memory serves) 3x the dmg of blue arm, which oneshots filths and strays and is very strong against all stationary enemies, ideally you want to constantly keep swapping between blue and red arm as you need - rocket launcher cannon ball can be shot for explosion, railcannon shot will make it red explosion (which also works on soldiers, i forgor) - filths and other weak enemies are annoying and not fun to style on, try getting them in one place and use single explosion to quickly get rid of them, my favorite is overcharged shotgun, speaking of which... - if you dash right before shooting overcharged shotgun you will create explosion during your i-frames and not take damage from it, handy in tight spaces it's obviously not all, but definitely what i would consider most important and/or easy to learn and remember, have fun in hell

I'd like to say that while I think the attractor variant of the nailgun isn't that good in comparison to its sawblade counterpart, I'd argue the overheat variant of the nailgun is just as good as the sawblade overheat, purely because while the overheat sawblade is immensely good for traps and bouncing off walls in a tight space, the overheat nailgun is probably one of the highest damage dealing weapons that can be used for direct damage in quick bursts
@k680B Жыл бұрын
@@DominatorLater i mean, nailgun is considered weak only because it's not meta in cybergrind, in casual playthrough and outside prime sanctums it's decent enough i guess, and if you really want nailgun in your arsenal then yeah, overheat is better of the two however overheat nailgun use cases are very few, only one that comes to my mind is bursting maurices, but i'm positive that 2 pump shotgun + red arm does comparable damage while requiring much less time at close range to execute, if you wanna get that personal with maurice in first place that is what i can give to nailgun tho is that it's more fun to use (for me at least), even if suboptimal
@jongkok2213 Жыл бұрын
While the nailgun does seem pretty useless on the surface, outside of speedrunning I very much prefer it over the sawblade launcher for things such as high-wave cybergrind and casual play/freestyle since it allows the player to improvise way more than what the sawblade launcher allows for. In fact, the setup required (which honestly isn't that much in the grand scheme of ULTRAKILL tech) is why I like it so much. Catapulting, Overheat Storage, setting up a crowd of swordsmachines for the Conductor style bonus keeps me using it constantly. That and the two heatsinks Overheat provides and the Attractor's higher ammo count make it much more useful in high-wave cybergrind than the sawblade launcher, as the sheer amount of enemies (or a single hideous mass) tend to quickly chew through a sawtrap, whereas you can use the nailguns for much longer in multiple situations.

One thing I really love about this game is that there's basically no skill ceiling. You can practice all the mechanics and discover so much weird and obscure tech to the point where it feels overkill, but the game still rewards players who get that far with stuff like the Prime Sanctums, high Cybergrind waves, and eventually all the custom levels people will be able to put out. The enemy and environment design is also perfect, every layer looks unique and the shifts in tone when you go from one to another always feel amazing, and every enemy has a very distinct and memorable design (plus stuff like special visual and sound cues, like the beams that Idols make) that makes an arena full of them surprisingly easy to read.
@MrRukrio1 Жыл бұрын
i'll add that the main reason railcoining is more effective than simply shooting it with the Revolver or it's variant, is because the Electric Railcannon has *infinite piercing*. as long as you have coins, you can hit the same target again. so in theory you can sit the same motherfucker up to an extra 4 times. and the craziest thing is not only is there tech for weapons and how you use them, BUT MOVEMENT AS WELL. from rocket riding directly inspired by your favorite franchise (Word of God/Hakita confirmed, btw) to being able to basically BLJ off a walljump due to a glitch players found that became not just a feature, but canon. you can then transfer the momentum from vertical momentum to *horizontal momentum* by slidehopping instead of simply jumping on landing. Slam Storage (the trick i mentioned) is literally the reason mechanically you don't have a proper rocket jump: Slam Storage outclasses it easily due to only needing a wall. you can still blast jump using Core Eject, the Malicious Railcannon, or hitscanning your own rocket or Core Eject (doing so with Malicious is a Nuke) but that's more of a panic button solution. and don't get me started on the fact the coin lets you parry hitscan attacks. Malicious face is a great enemy to practice it on, too.

When ULTRAKILL was announced the idea of a stylish shooter was weird to me (in a good way). I've grown up on SP shooters and they were mostly about optimal gameplay, most of the creativity coming from the weapons themselves, rather than the mechanics. For Example - the ASMD shockrifle from Unreal Tournament could fit right into ULTRAKILL, due to the way it has two fire modes that interact with one another. However Ultrakill asked me to be stylish, which is something I've never seen in a shooter of that type. I mean - I've seen trick shot compilations of MW which are their own unique form of "styling" (Yes, a 360 no scope headshot is styling PRECISELY because it's going out of your way to be extra in the kill you deliver, when a simple zoom in and shot can get the same kill result). ULTRAKILL however is a weird one, due to the combination it presents: Devil May Quake. Quake, which is for most intents and purposes a very stale game when it comes to what you can do, but a really fun one when you consider its roster of enemies: Ogres with chainsaws that launch grenades that zone you, zombies demanding gibs to die, floating enemies, knights charging you for a melee hit or having a cone attack - etc. On the other side you have DMC - where again, you have different enemies doing different stuff BUT you have different tools of varying degrees of complexity to deal with them - dodging an enemy with a trickster dash is easier than Royal Guarding their attacks, but it's also less rewarding in terms of DT, style points etc. Which brings me to the last point. I find it weird how Style Meters were introduced as a way to nudge players towards different playstyles without forcing them. Sure, you could play it safe and use only optimal strats but you wouldn't get a high score. Yet nowadays they're seen as a negative precisely BECAUSE they're a soft nudge, rather than a hard one. Yet even DMC has hard nudges itself (at least it used to have them). Take for example the Enigma from DMC3 - everyone hates this enemy precisely because it requires certain moves/weapons to be countered. Same goes for Bloodgoyles which all require the same strat of being turned to stone first via gunfire or punish the player by multiplying if directly hit with melee. I guess high scores and clearing a level with high ranks is simply too Arcadey for modern gaming.

Every. Single. Gun. Enemy. Or environment. Has. USE The sharpshooter revolver? If you time it right you can oneshot floating heads, since shooting projectiles makes them expload Or you can jump over an enemy and shoot downward to hit them multiple times Or you can just become a helicopter with a few multiwield powerups That is barely scratching ONE VARIANT of ONE GUN Also I bet we are going to get a new gun along with alternate versions of every gun (the revolver has a heavy hitting alternate which you can mix and match with different variations, and the nail gun has a saw gun alt which can easily stack up damage on a group or single enemy) ULTRAGAMING

Man it's great to see you broaden your horizons and find enjoyment in other genres. And I'm glad to see you loved Ultrakill as much as the next person. Although I find myself getting jealous when I see others enjoying this game so much. The gameplay just looks absolutely amazing, yet when I hop on the game myself to start learning and experimenting, I just cant seem to stick with it. For some reason Ultrakill is a game that can't seem to hold my attention and that bothers me. It especially weird because I have sunk hundreds of hours into DMC 5 and Doom Eternal, So why can't I stick with a game like ultrakill? Anyway enough of the moping. I love the new approach to your videos, and keep up the stellar work!
@nevinmyers1245 Жыл бұрын
I think ultrakill's default controls actually aren't that good. It might be that there are too many buttons, but a lot are hard to reach, like pressing 5 for the rocket launcher or pressing G to switch arms. I think Hakita expects that players will decide how they want to play and customize their controls accordingly. For me, I wanted to make sure there was no skill cap set by my control layout, so I bound switch arm to Q because I don't use the weapon wheel, then I bound railcannon to Z and rocket launcher to X. The furthest I have to reach on my keyboard is to 1, 2, and 3 to access the revolver, shotgun, and nailgun.

2 things: 1. A correction: The sharpshooter doesn't get a damage increase from coins anymore. It did when it first launched, but that was so incredibly busted, it was fixed in less then a day as this version of the red revolver has able to shred the hardest bosses in seconds. 2. A little hint of what is possible with the coin too (I'll put it behind the 'Show more' thing if you don't want to see that) Coins can ricochet any hitscan attack. This includes the malicious beam or the sentries shot. Doing this is hard, but it instant kills anything below a malicious face I think and give you the style bonus '+Chargebback'

the funny thing about this game, that it teaches you from 0-3 onwards (or 0-2 if you found the big secret), is that it runs on troll logic so "shotgun shots are projectiles > feedbacker can parry projectiles > feedbacker can parry shotgun shots" and "sharpshooter shots make projectiles go boom > v2's nailgun shoots projectiles > sharpshooter shots make v2's nails go boom" are completely sound trains of thought and because the devs are chads, even the unintended ways to style on things get to stay in the game, unless they're completely broken, like that one time the sharpshooter put the obama cube into obamacare anyone can do almost anything with any weapon (that isn't the standard piercer or alternate marksman), and the game is built around that freedom (translation: it hard)

12:55 mayo became on very high of this words) to be honest, i tend to disagree with this statement, since in most places using different weapons and techs are not just stylish way to play but very useful. enemies will pursue you so hard, especially on higher difficulties, that playing with only revolver will be so much pain. and i love, that your creativity and stylish way to play are awarded by the game itself. doing railcoin, nuke and etc. are both fun and effective

12:55 I think that Underthemayo actually had a good point here, although he wasn't really the nicest about it and didn't really deliver his suggestions well. If they added ammo in Ultrakill in a way that would not effect you when you're playing "the right way" but still managed to teach and help new players to figure out the most fun way to play this game, it could maybe be more enjoyable for a larger amount of people. Ammo recharging faster the higher your style rank is would be a pretty cool way to implement it. But maybe this is the way they wanted to make it, let everyone play the way they want to play. Which option is actually better, I don't know, something like this needs to be tested a lot, which they probably already did. Another suggestion that I heard somewhere, don't know who it was from, was to make you right click attacks recharge much faster based on your style rank and have infinite ammo on your left click
@jhomathon Жыл бұрын
I didn’t really care about his argument that the game should be more challenging to push players to be better, I don’t really agree but I at least understand, but saying the game should have an ammo system would actually be so awful.

There's a genre for people who want freedom as well as a genre for people who want direction. I don't think either is bad. Some people are goal oriented while others don't need a reason to explore stuff. It all depends on what the devs want honestly. You can't force a person to engage with mechanics if they don't want to follow your rules. Some people want to do whatever they want. Just like you can't force a person to be creative within gameplay.
@chonkycat841 Жыл бұрын
@@ChaserTechWell said. I would prefer it to be more challenging and forcing you to engage more because I know 2 of my friends tried out the game and didn't really figure out the charm of it before they got bored. Their gameplay didn't go far from shooting with the pistol and occasionally doing a projectile boost because it looks cool. I don't know if the game's design is the problem or it just isn't for them, both things are okay. One of them is a DMC fan, we play coop frequently (might even participate in some tournaments together if it is allowed) so I thought he might like the game if he understood what was so special about it. But right now, there's still no point in me arguing here since only 2/3 of the game are actually finished, and there are still 2 more difficulties to be unlocked. Ultrakill is basically the child of my 2 favourite games. I only want the best for it.

Having played a bit of Doom Eternal, the thing that stuck out to me about D:E was that it's very call-and-response. There's one, maybe two specific weapons that each enemy very _specifically_ is weak to. This does wonders for the game's readability, but it also makes me feel like I'm playing a very complicated game of Simon Says. This, combined with tight ammo requirements, made D:E feel...overwhelming. If I'm not hitting exactly the right buttons at exactly the right times, I feel like I'm underperforming. And, y'know, I appreciate parts of it--like, the HAR's scope being key to popping weakpoints on a lot of enemies, that's an awesome way to help with the HAR's awkward position in D2016's arsenal. But it's overwhelming. Contrast with Ultrakill. No one weapon in Ultrakill's arsenal is *specific* to one enemy. Some interactions are specific to a _set_ of weapons--only hitscan weapons can score headshots or bounce off coins--but it's nowhere near as specific as D:E, which has enemies like the shield grunts, who basically exist to make you save your plasma rifle ammo for them. As a result, Ultrakill _doesn't_ feel overwhelming--because I don't feel like I'm losing out if I fail to answer each enemy with their specific counter. Instead, it feels _empowering,_ because I'm free to choose which of my tools I want to try. I don't _have_ to be optimal.

P ranking all of the levels unlect P-1 / P-2. while riding a rocket, use the malicous railcannon to make yourself go extreamly fast. you can slide on water.

The thing is with ultrakill, is that although there’s so many mechanics, the average player can easily play the game because all of the guns are powerful on their own. Sure, you can try some tricks, but you never have to go crazy with it if you feel like it’s too hard for you.
