I totally agree! When I was a student I a had problems with register and triple/double tonguing and my single tonguing was good enough for the repertoire. When I moved to a "tongue centered" approach my embouchure became much more stable and i fixed all of my problems in sound and register!

That's a success story for sure.

Excellent tutorial, Chase! Timely, too - as I’ve recently become aware how much I’ve allowed multiple tonguing and awareness of tongue position to atrophy! Lazy tonguing and valve technique easily becomes habit - and those two bad habits (especially any resistance introduced with sloppy valves) negatively impact endurance!

It always seems like something is getting short shrift. I created the Brass Tactics 6/60 Routine as a way to make sure I touch all the bases of sound production, and it's been quite effective in that regard. But there are plenty of other things to fall behind on!

I always think of sports analogies. Pete Rose once said that baseball players tend to practice what they’re already good at, when that’s exactly the opposite of what they need to do. My multiple tonguing has always sucked, and of course many jazz guys rarely use it, so I have two poor excuses!

I use the analogy of the plate spinner--you have to focus your effort on the one that is most wobbly. I believe all aspects of playing the instrument are interconnected--an improvement in one is an improvement in all. I'll have a video specifically on jazz articulation coming out soon.
