Good to hear that they fixed the issue with the barometer. I use my Instinct Solar 1 mainly for cycling and skiing and having a storm warning because of the location of the barometer port becomes a bit annoying. Hopefully they also managed to fix the notification problems with iOS 15, although that's probably more a firmware than a hardware issue. The better sleep analysis feature is also nice. The other new features are not that important for me.
@ChaseTheSummit2 жыл бұрын
The notification issue with IOS is more of an apple thing than a Garmin thing unfortunately. The phone will put Garmin Connect to "sleep" in an attempt to save battery life. I suspect Apple isn't in any hurry to help Garmin with this since they'd rather you buy an Apple Watch lol.

Thank you very very much for this comprehensive review. I have an instinct 1 non-solar and I'm totally in the market for an upgrade. I'm opting towards the 1 Solar over the 2 Solar for several reasons: 1- Much Cheaper 2- The 2 Solar is reported to be harder to see in low-light backlight whereas the 1 does not have that problem 3- I've seen multiple reports of some crashing and bugs with the new software in the 2 4- All of these new upgrades seem more geared towards running, which is not what I really use my Instinct for. I do Hiking, Scuba Diving, and (soon to be) Piloting, and it doesn't look like there have been any substantial upgrades to the GPS or navigation side of things to really justify the new purchase in my case. Have you had any experiences with bugs in your Instinct 2 Solar? The biggest thing I would consider the Instinct 2 Solar for is the improved battery live, but is it really THAT much better than the 1 Solar? Would love to hear what you think. : )

@beng35912 жыл бұрын
Also how do the various GPS battery saver modes work?
@ChaseTheSummit2 жыл бұрын
There's no topo maps on board the Instinct 2. In terms of navigation it relies on breadcrumb mapping which indicates your trail, where you came from (like dropping virtual breadcumbs along your path). For a "full map" experience with trails, herd paths, and routeable POI support you'll need upgrade toe a Fenix, Epix, or 945. The breadcrumb mapping is very useful though. The Instinct can navigate on a bearing or projected waypoint if you find that useful. GPS Battery Saver will reduce the accuracy of the GPS sample rate along with disabling other sensors of the watch to extend the battery life in GPS mode. Hope that helps.

Great review. I'm looking to upgrade from a Fenix 3HR. That unlimited battery life is really appealing on the solar version. Plus the watch does seem to have all the bells and whistles that are important to me like SPO, HR, Sleep tracking. I'm very close to pulling the trigger. I just can't justify the price on the Fenix 7. Plus I have to see if I can get over the fact it's not color. So far looks like a great practical smartwatch.

I think the Instinct 2 is a good compromise for folks who want a Fenix at a lower price point. Thanks for watching!

I wish you could make a video later on how it performs with normal sun exposure (not the 3-hour, direct sun light thing). I have the instinct solar, and it's completely useless when it comes to getting use of the solar charge. I get 0 days from it, knowing that I spend a good portion of my day outside. also, the watch doesn't reach the 24 days as advertised. you barely get 20. so I really hope that this new version will give you at least a couple of days with normal sun exposure. please let us know. much appreciated

I have a question about the mapping how does that work or the track where you have been feature. Can you show us?
@ChaseTheSummit2 жыл бұрын
There's a couple of clips of the navigation feature in this video but they're brief. Essentially the Instinct has "bread crumb mapping". Think of it as if you're dropping virtual breadcrumbs as you move creating a trail/course. You can use this to navigate back to the start of your route and you can also load a GPX file into the watch to follow in the same way. When following a GPX / course the watch will alert you any time you wonder off the path. Hope that helps!

Hi, I have bought Instinct 2 Solar 45mm and the watch is great, the only problem I have is the battery. I have have Pulse Ox manual, HR auto, baro/alti auto, backlight 20% on only after sunset general use, 5% during sleep, 4 sec timeout for all. I stopped all notifications and I enable phone connection only to sync 2 times per day, sounds off, vibration on, moveIQ & Move alert off, all alarms off. I also don't do anything at all on the watch just to check the max I can get. This is the most battery saving I can think of and it drains 4-5% (1-2days) per day on track for about 22days after full charge. I already drained the battery once and fully charged. I think that if I use it as an actual smart watch 24/7 phone connected + notifications I will get no more than 18-20days which is nowhere close to 28 garmin claims. Anyone else with the same issue?
@ChaseTheSummit2 жыл бұрын
During those 18-20 days are you using the GPS function at all?
@butcher342 жыл бұрын
@@ChaseTheSummit I only guessed that it will probably last about 18-20h as smartwatch with bluetooth, notifications on, etc. Since now it goes for about 22-23days with the listed settings. And nope, no GPS is included. On my first battery charge to 100% it lasted 6-7 days with about 13-14h of GPS during that period, but I feel that after draining and charging the battery, it's a bit better. Tomorrow I will go on a 2h-3h hike and will let you know how it affects the battery.
@butcher342 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delayed response. I did quite a lot of testing using GPS+GLONASS (smart). It drains about 4% per hour and it was all in sunny conditions. So I guess in sunny conditions the battery would last about 25h, I know 48 is far fetched but I was hoping for at least 35-40 under the sun. I also dropped backlight to 10% and changed the watch face to one that refreshes data per hour, without seconds or HR and improved the battery life a bit. Still the advertised battery life is well beyond anything I can get out of it. I might ask for a replacement. Since no one else is having the same issues it might be my unit.

I really liked your video for sharp and quick review, but a small feedback is that when you are holding watches to show them and talking at the same time, the hand shakes and hence the video capture is very shaky and makes it hard to focus / concentrate on the watch differences.

Tough call, the Fenix 6 is technically a more premium watch but the Instinct 2 has a better heart rate sensor, slightly better GPS accuracy, longer battery life in some modes, and more efficient solar functions. Then again, the Fenix 6 Pro has real mapping/navigation.
