superb as ever Bruce, thanks for sharing your travels through the land of my childhood, I can't explain how magical it is to see many of the places that I remember. I stayed at the Chimanimani hotel for a week as a child with my parents. We explored the Bvumba (Vumba back then) mountains and Birchenough Bridge. I have a photo of me as a child in front of the bridge. I seem to recall we bought some carvings from a roadside kiosk near there. We also climbed Chimanimani. I returned to Chimanimani as an adult and did the climb again (it didn't seem as big as I had remembered it to be). There also used to be a campsite at Christmas Pass in Mutare that we used to stay overnight on the way to/from Beira or Gorongosa in Mozambique. The Christmas Pass campsite was in a pine forest which was so different to the flaura of most of Zimbabwe. My dad would not drive faster than 75kph as he said that it was safer if you had a blowout, so it used to take us a long time to get where we were going on big trips!
@OverlandingwithBruce Жыл бұрын
Such awesome memories John, thank you for sharing them. It's funny how that works. A month ago I managed to sweet talk some security to allow me into a complex where our childhood house still stands. They are refurbishing it but wow it seems so small and I have such clear memories of it. Thank you for watching again and taking the time to comment.

Thanks Bruce, nicely arranged & casual without becoming monotonous (also like the snippets of info). When I was a kid I remember my dad & cousin climbing over the top of Birchenough Bridge. Recently we were in Gonarezhou and stayed at Rossi Pools. What spectacular location, in fact the whole of the Mwendzi river camps & sites are spectacular. I was interested that you used the Malapati BB road. I was contemplating using it back to Bulawayo, but decided to go back via Kyle Dam/ Great Zim - Matopos & home (Botswana). I like your alternative routes, many are roads/tracks I haven't been on for many years (decades).
@OverlandingwithBruce10 ай бұрын
Thank you very much. Your dad and cousin are very brave. I could never do that 😂 I always try do the roads less travelled and have been rewarded many times. That back road would be slow back to Bullies or Bots and after lots of rain impassable in places but it’s a really nice route. You could leave Gonarezhou, then stay at the Drummond farm about 80kms from Beitbridge then up to Bulawayo or just drive straight through. I made it to Johannesburg from there but it was a long day. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. All the best

Great to watch Zimbabwe being still such a magic place, my experience here in Kenya is, when animals in a remote area are shy and running away, it mostly points to them being hunted by poachers. Animas that haven't seen cars in a long time usually stand an watch in awe, as happened to me during Covid Lockdown time in Tsavo when I was the only person in the park after month and month. Great Video, keep up the good work...
