I went to a speaking event that Thomas spoke at 4 years ago maybe, still got the filter case with his signature on it! I think he said that he blocks out a number of days every now and then a shoots in bulk, edits all the footage to release ahead os]f schedule. But I am sure this may have changed, since the channel is much bigger, probably has more things that require management etc

Impressive to see the images you created in the course of an impromptu drive about, and inspiring. We too had winter return in April. 9 April I was conducting a smartphone wildflower photography workshop for the local native plant society at our place in the Columbia River Gorge in shirtsleeves spring weather. 11 April the flowers were buried under half a foot of snow. It was quite a winter we had this spring.

I really enjoyed this video! I like the iPad analysis to hear how you examine the photo after the shoot. My favorite part of the video is when you turn your head and the back of your hat is _covered_ in snow: I could feel the weather. My favorite pic is the bigger tree in the snow at 07:16. Not sure why. Snow in April though, today one year ago (4/20/2021) it was snowing like that in St. Louis, Mo. Today, I live in Las Vegas. Can't say I enjoy seasons changing day-to-day, but you certainly have made the most of the British weather! Thanks.

Thomas, watching your video's is a highlight each week so thanks for that. This week the trees shot was favored but really like the others. Nice add with the ipad!. Interesting what you say about your weather. We say the same here in Calgary. We have had a number of 20+ degree days but we just got hit with 22 cm's. We may get more snow than you but you have way higher gas prices...about 70% higher.....yikes. The big question however, did you eat your hat!

A productive morning, and I love the final image. We had some of that "interesting" weather up here in Aberdeenshire a week or two ago, which I assume is when this was shot. @jpdj27152 жыл бұрын
As you "stack" from focus-stepped images, I have an experiment for you along these lines. The grey skies over these wintery landscapes triggering that thought. And, talk about grey skies, over the the UK you can expect such skies all year long, isn't it? It starts with a bit of math as introduction. Our exposure values on our cameras make light intensity*time linear after taking the 2-base logarithm of that i*t (in the film era, we used 10-base log for "density" in assessing exposure, material and processing relative to gradation). Simply put, within dynamic range, this means that i*t differences at the bottom end of the log scale have more gradation detail than in the top end of the range. This also means that "expose to the right" compresses gradation nuances in the highlights, while it maximizes gradation differences in the blacks. With our eyes and brains we "see" more like the 10-base log of film (density), by the way. Here's a disclaimer: we don't precisely know how a camera does its analog-to-digital conversion. We know the actual sensors in the sensor are the photosites and these are analog - taking a photo means that the analog-electrical state of each photosite is sampled and converted into a digital number (of e.g. 14 bits precision - in one color band and hence each photosite sample is in fact "monochrome") in the AD circuit. So how a camera's digital integer relates to i*t is in the deepest level of a camera's firmware and this is specific to camera manufacturer, camera model, sensor version, etc. Assuming that the AD conversion applies a form of log-compression towards the brighter areas (thus mimicking the human vision), we then have this "more gradation detail in the blacks than the whites" effect. Back to the grey sky: these clouds seem evenly grey or white in very large areas and the picture might become more interesting if there was a hunch more gradation in there. Well, then we can only register such gradation detail by under-exposing. So, with my camera I would start with "highlight-weighted" metering that makes sure only the single whitest of all 45-something million photosites is pure white (the algorithm seems to ignore the sun blasting directly into the camera). In a landscape this generally means that individual twinkles far apart in a water surface are all correctly exposed but the entire frame looks 2 to 3 EV under-exposed - the moral is that incidental not-connected photosites do not need gradation between them (neither in print nor on our monitors). So when I shoot metered highlight-weighted, I generally over-expose 1 to 2 EV (I've always been a "manual die-heart" but this works well and in case of doubts, I have my Sekonic 758). But the measurement gives a precise indication where blowing out highlights starts, more easily than switching a color warning on. From the "normal" highlight-weighted measurement, we now can bracket with increasing under-exposure. These under-exposed frames will reveal gradation in the seemingly evenly lit parts of clouds - there is no guarantee of gradation here. And if there is, the artist's question is, will it add to the impact of the final picture if I add the gradation into it. And if yes, then the frames can be stacked in Photoshop. It's a thought experiment from me now (health issues keep me from experimenting with it).
